What Is The White Golden Retriever

White, English Cream Golden Retriever Puppies, 5 weeks old

An all-white golden retriever is simply a golden retriever with a pale-colored coat. Unlike their more golden-toned cousins, these dogs have a cream or almost white coat color. The difference between the two dogs emerged over time.

Golden retrievers were originally created by Scottish breeders in the 19th century. This dog breed was developed over the course of more than 50 years. Several different types of breeds were introduced into the mix over time to create the dog we know and love today.

Eventually, the standard golden retriever breed was born. But this breeds diverse genetic background is likely the reason there is a color difference.

Over time, the golden-toned dogs and the lighter-toned ones developed into two different types or variations of the same breed. Today, we call these Americangolden retrievers and English cream golden retrievers.

Truth be told, the white golden retriever is actually just a broad name given to English cream golden retrievers. This is because this variety tends to have lighter-colored coatshence the white name.

In fact, these dogs go by several different names, including platinum retriever, rare white European retriever, exquisite platinum imported golden retriever, or simply white retriever.

Although English cream golden retriever puppies or white golden retriever puppies are just becoming interesting to American dog lovers, that doesnt mean they are rare.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Were First Bred In Scotland

First seen in Scotland, the English Cream Golden Retriever was bred somewhere between 1854 and 1894.

Around 1868, Baron Tweedmouth of Guisachan bred together his two rare dogs, Wavy Coated Retriever x Tweed Water Spaniel .

The four puppies were used as gundogs and favored for their soft mouth grip.

Their skill of retrieval was unrivaled as they could retrieve both in water and on land.

Over time this breed made its way over to America, the first records show the Golden Retreiver popping up in America in around 1910.

Shortly afterwards, in November 1925 the first Retriever was registered with the American Kennel Club being named the American Golden Retriever.

Exercise & Living Conditions

The English Cream Golden Retriever is less boisterous than his American counterpart, but this does not mean he needs any less exercise. Being a traditional working breed, he needs a lot of exercise. Expect to spend at least 1 hour every day vigorously exercising the English Cream, come rain or shine. If you cant do this, expect your English Cream Retriever to take out his energy on your possessions.

In between exercise sessions, he will need a lot of interactive playtime too. The Golden Retriever is the 4th most intelligent dog breed, meaning they need mental stimulation. Be sure to invest in plenty of toys for him to play with. Or design DIY brain games that you can both play, such as find the ball under the cup.

The English Cream Golden Retriever needs to live with an active family who can guarantee him his exercise needs and keep his intelligent mind occupied. Because of this, and the fact that he is a needy dog who craves the company of his humans, he needs a family that can spend most of their time with him.

Apartment living is not going to work for the English Cream. He needs a larger home with access to his own yard that he can roam and chill in til his hearts content. Because he is an outdoorsy dog breed, he will get cabin fever very quickly.

About Our European White Cream Litters:

The Truth About English Cream (White) Golden Retrievers ...

Our AKC purebred white cream pups from Huxley & Duchess are adorable! Pictures are posted at 4-6 weeks of age and videos at 7-8 weeks. Before 5 weeks of age, we show pictures and videos from the previous litter of these parents to help give our customers an idea of the puppy appearance and features that can be expected from Emery-n-Denise’s Golden puppies.

Many people ask us about the puppy’s personality or temperament. We can only base our opinion on the temperaments of the parents and what we observe in the puppy when we are playing with it, cutting its toenails, giving its medications, or bathing it. However, the puppy’s temperament can change as it matures. Both parents both have a mild to medium temperament, not overly excited or shy, and very obedient. We have started rating the puppies temperament on a scale of 1 to 10 and we call it, “liveliness.” So, a higher rating would mean more active and playful, and a lower rating, less active and more mellow. Next to the photos of each puppy, we have rated what we feel is the liveliness of the puppy as we have observed. If we see the personality mellowing out or becoming more active, we will change the rating accordingly during our 9 weeks of care. We hope this helps.

What is an English cream golden retriever?

An English cream golden retriever is a golden retriever descended from an English line with a light-colored coat. This breed is not officially recognized by any kennel club, which means that many breeders may claim to offer English cream golden retrievers for sale without much oversight. However, all English cream golden retrievers can still technically be registered as regular golden retrievers, so be sure to ask for pedigree information before making your purchase.

What is the difference between a golden retriever and an English cream golden retriever?

Although all golden retrievers are of English origin, deviations in American and British kennel club standards have resulted in two recognizable bloodlines. English golden retrievers tend to have rounder eyes, wider heads, stockier builds, and in some cases, lighter coats. The casual term English cream golden retriever typically refers to an English golden retriever with a particularly light coat of fur however, its worth noting that responsible breeders select for health rather than coat color.

The Akc Frowns On English Cream Golden Retrievers

According to the American Kennel Club, they deem very pale Golden Retrievers as inferior according to their breed standards. However, contrary to popular belief, the AKC still recognizes them as purebred Golden Retrievers and will register them accordingly, as long as the breeder is registered.

English Cream Golden Retrievers have the palest coat of all Golden Retrievers. However, they are still a shade of gold.

Golden Retrievers overall have an extensive range of coat colors within their breed. Their coats can range from very light and pale in color to rich gold, which almost looks red. There are also many shades in between.

Perhaps due to being described as undesirable, these English Cream Golden Retrievers are not as commonly found in America as in European Countries.

Opposing the AKC, the Kennel Club in the UK accepts any shade of gold or cream. Both Canada and Australia have similar standards in favor of cream shades as well.

Golden retrievers come in a variety of colours. These colours may be English cream, toffee or golden in colour. White Golden retriever puppies do not live longer than other colours of golden retriever dogs. In reality, the age and health of a dog do ot depend on its colour but instead depends on the bloodline and breeding of the dog. A dog that comes from good breeding may or may not live longer than dogs with inferior breeding.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not From England

No, most English Cream goldens youll find in America are not from England.

Just like French fries are not from France.

All golden retrievers originated from Scotland in the mid-1800s when Lord Tweedmouth bred a Tweed water spaniel and a yellow wavy-coated retriever.

Most American breeders of these goldens either breed dogs from here in the States or import their dogs from all over the world, including:

  • Denmark
  • The Netherlands

So how did English Cream goldens get their misleading name?

According to Bev Brown, the Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club, were the first ones to write up the breed standard.

And in the early 1900s, all dog shows in Britain were held in England.

So in America, we called the champions of those dog shows, English Champions.

The English seems to have stuck with goldens that look like the English champions in those days, so 100 years later were calling them English Cream Golden Retrievers.

They Are Not Healthier Than Golden Retrievers

Some breeders will try and advertise these canines as healthier because of their cream color coat.

However, there is no evidence to support this.

English Cream Golden Retrievers are prone to the same health conditions seen in darker coated Golden siblings.

Although it is thought to be less common in this breed hip and elbow dysplasia are frequently seen in this pooch.

As with other large dog breeds, hip dysplasia is a developmental condition caused by incorrect formation of the hip joint.

Generally speaking, the condition is genetic, but can also be triggered by obesity at a young age.

In most cases the condition can be managed with pain medication, but in more severe cases hip dysplasia may require surgery to correct.

They are also prone to Osteochondritis Dissecans. This is a condition whereby the cartilage separates from the bone.

It can occur anywhere within the body but is most commonly seen in the elbow, knee, shoulder or hip joints.

Retrievers are also known to have ongoing problems with their eyes and heart.

Conditions such as cataracts are often commonplace in the English Cream Golden Retriever, and although uncommon, it is not unheard of for this breed to develop heart issues such as Cardiomyopathy.

A survey completed in 2004 found that the three most common causes of death for the Golden Retriever were: various types of cancer, heart issues and old age.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Perfect Family Dogs

Kind, loving and gentle, these guys are renowned for their patience with children.

Their kind and playful nature makes them a perfect match for young children.

Although they are considered to be a large dog, they are extremely gentle and are not at all accident prone.

This patience and kindness extends to other household pets.

With good socialization, this loving pooch gets on well with all pets, big and small. Even if they are introduced to one another later in life, the English Cream Golden Retriever is very patient and will quickly adapt to their new companion.

Known to be very intelligent and to enjoy games, a bored Retriever is a menace, barking, howling and even destroying furniture.

To stimulate this canine, it may be beneficial to teach your dog tricks, or even enter them in a canine sport.

They naturally want to please, and consequently they make very fast learners.

It is not uncommon to see one of their siblings in an obedience ring, picking up basic and more complicated commands very quickly.

Although that being said, they are known to have a cheeky and mischievous side and occasionally may put their own fun first!

Should You Get A White Golden Retriever

White, English Cream Golden Retriever Puppies

If you are interested in a new companion, a white golden retriever dog is a great choice. These dogs are fun-loving, patient, and extremely loyal to their humans.

In particular, we highly recommend goldens for families. These dogs love lots of attention and enjoy groups of people. They are also easy to train and are perfect for young children.

On top of that, English cream golden retrievers adjust to any type of home, and they especially like being involved in all family activities. As long as they get enough exercise, your white golden will happily curl up on the couch next to you at the end of the day.

An English cream golden retriever will also be a great companion for family movie nights, only asking for belly rubs from time to time during the film. This is in stark contrast to Labradors and some other types of retriever dogs that get bored easily and need a lot of mental stimulation.

All types of retrievers, including English cream golden retrievers, are highly intelligent and easy to train. Known for their eager-to-please and obedient natures, goldens make great pets even for newbie dog parents who have no prior experience training a dog.

On the other hand, a golden retriever might not be the best choice for you if you live alone or dont exercise often. They also are not the best guard dogs. Though goldens are loyal to their owners, they quickly befriend strangers and are more likely to greet an intruder with a wagging tail than a threatening bark!
