You Should Know That Not All Of The Different Breeds Of Dogs Are Suitable For All Households

Training 8 Week Old English Golden Retriever Puppies (Molly/Luke Litter)

You should know what you want out of your dog and you should also know about the personality traits of the breed. A Golden Retriever puppy may not be the best choice for someone with small children or people who like to have things to do outside.

It is also not a good idea to introduce a Golden Retriever to another dog until they are older and the dog has had more experience with the other pets. A little too much stress can actually cause problems with the new dog.

So remember that if you are going to bring a puppy into your home, you should take the time to know what it will be like in the new home. There are many advantages to having a Golden Retriever puppy but make sure that you take care when choosing a puppy, so you do not end up with an unhappy animal.

You need to consider what the personality traits of the new Golden Retriever puppy are. Do they have a laid back nature or do they need to be taught some manners? The breed of the Golden Retriever is also important because they tend to be rather high strung and will bark a lot when there is a noise outside that bothers them.

If you have decided to adopt a Golden Retriever puppy then you are taking a step into a beautiful world that is full of possibility. You can teach them the skills that you want to be taught. And you will have a loyal and faithful companion for a very long time.

Crate Training Is The Best Puppy Potty Training Method

Potty training a puppy is one of the biggest concerns for new puppy owners. Golden Retrievers are bright, easily trained dogs and learn to use the outdoors for bathroom needs very quickly. Crate training is the fastest, most efficient way to housebreak a Golden Retriever puppy.

Puppies, by nature, will not defecate or urinate in their sleeping area. While there is a very rare pup that will defy this rule, nearly every dog will refrain from soiling their bedding area. Crate training is a tool to achieve a potty trained puppy and is based on the dog’s instinctive need to keep their bed area clean.

An appropriately sized crate serves as the puppy’s bed, and the dog is placed in the crate when the rest of the family cannot supervise it. The puppy will not soil the crate as long as certain rules are followed . When the puppy is taken outside after each period in the crate, he will go to the bathroom in the appropriate location. After a short period of time, the dog learns that the house is not a bathroom and that the backyard is the appropriate location to do his business!

Puppies should be placed in their crates at night for the first year: after that period of time, accidents are extremely unlikely. Most dogs will potty train in a very short period of time and become reliably housebroken after a month of crate training.

What If Your Puppy Wont Go In The Designated Spot

What happens when you bring your puppy out to the designated spot, follow all the rules, and they decide they dont have to go?

First of all, make sure youre giving them enough time to do their business. I recommend staying out for up to five minutes.

Do not make this into an exciting exploration session for your pup dont walk around or talk to your pup. If your pup responds to your cue word, you can say it every thirty seconds or so.

If they havent done their business after five minutes, bring them back inside. But wait, youre not done yet.

If youre using a crate for house training, pop your pup in the crate for ten minutes. Then, bring them back to the designated spot and try again.

If you dont use a crate, watch your puppy very carefully for ten minutes, for signs that they have to go. Do not let them wander unattended they may decide to sneak off and use your carpet. After ten minutes, head back out to your spot for another go.

Follow these steps as often as you have to, until your pup decides its potty time.

Needs Vary Schedule To Match Your Individual Puppy

There isnt a one-size-fits-all schedule that will work for every single puppy.

Instead, observe your pups natural rhythms so you can regularly be at your pups bathroom spot at the right time. This will give you ample opportunity to praise your puppy for doing the right thing, which is a huge benefit to teaching the right habits.

Do these strict routines seem like too much to handle?

Dont worry, as your puppy grows, they will need to go out less and less. Dont feel like you have to sacrifice your sanity to stick to a regimented schedule 100% of the time. Use your common sense and youll be fine. We all have a life to live outside of house training your best is good enough.

Many female dogs will be neutered once they have completed their first season. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex.

Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports.

Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him go jogging together for example and if necessary, to start to get him fit.

Golden Retriever Puppy Socialization

Every new puppy owner will hear about the importance of puppy socialization. But not all puppy owners carry out this important process effectively.

Socialization means introducing your puppy to many new experiences before they reach the age when they become shy of strangers and strange objects. That age is surprisingly young and most dogs need to be socialized fully before they are 13 weeks old.

That means you need to get going right away with your new Goldie pup!

Your puppy needs to meet lots of different men and women, in different situations, children, other dogs, trains and lorries, and much much more. All from the safety of your arms. And all before he or she is four months old.

Puppy socialization is vital because it helps to prevent dogs becoming aggressive and increases the retention rate of puppies in their homes.

You can find an excellent puppy socialization plan and lots of useful information on The Puppy Plan website provided by the Kennel Club in association with international charity The Dogs Trust

Golden Puppies Week #8 Highlights

Day 53 Temperament Testing

Lets start with temperament testing.

We took each puppy individually and did a rigorous test to find out which puppies would be best suited to do service dog work.

We already had a general idea of each puppys temperament based on observation over the past 8 weeks.

Overall there wasnt a lot of variance between our Golden puppies on the ten temperament tests we performed.

However, there were two tests that stood out:

  • The Retrieve Test We crumpled up a piece of paper next to our puppy to get his attention. When we got our puppys attention we threw the paper about 5 feet from the puppy then observed his reaction.
  • The Umbrella Stability Test We took an umbrella, opened it about 5 feet away from the puppy, and placed it in on the ground then observed the puppys reaction.
  • I mentioned we performed 10 tests, but the results of the above two ended up determining which puppies would be our next service dog puppies in training.

Day 54 Choosing Our Service Dog Puppies In Training

And the our next service dog puppies in training are:

    1. Liberty While she performed about the same as all the other pups on every other test, Liberty stood out during the Umbrella Stability Test. She was the only puppy to enthusiastically approach the Umbrella. We knew from day 1 that Liberty was a confident puppy and had a good feeling that she would have no problem with the Umbrella. She lived up to our expectation boldly and playfully engaging the umbrella.

    Golden Retriever Puppy Zoomies

At first, it might not seem like zoomies should be anything to worry about. But all puppy owners can tell you just how destructive these random bursts of energy can be.

Especially with a relatively large breed like the Golden Retriever.

In fact, it can lead to broken ornaments, ripped fabric, muddy pawprints all over the house, and knocked over children. It can be quite distressing for new puppy parents!

Running after your puppy can often make this worse as it seems like a fun game to your puppy.

Instead, encourage calm behavior by rewarding your puppy when theyre relaxing peacefully.

You wont be able to avoid the zoomies altogether, but you can try to minimise them by ignoring this behavior and rewarding calmness.

    Physical Exercise For 8

Meet Dexter (My 8 Week Old Golden Retriever Puppy)

Fetch can be a great exercise outlet for Golden Retrievers, but sometimes it can have the opposite effect.

Rather than tiring your dog out, the repetitive nature of the game can actually hype them up into an almost obsessive state.

Of course, plenty of Goldens do just fine with a classic game of fetch, but observe your dog to see what effect fetch has on their behavior.

One of the best ways to exercise your adolescent pup is off-leash adventures.

You might have to do some research to find a safe way to give your pup an opportunity to stretch his legs and frolic, and always check the leash laws for your area, but some areas do have designated off-leash spaces for dogs.

You can also check out Sniffspot, where you can find private dog parks for rent.

Empty baseball fields can work well because theyre grassy and fenced in, but you might want to see if dogs are allowed first.

Dog parks are also an option for off-leash time.

There is always a risk when you take your pup to a dog park, as you just dont know how the other dogs at the park will behave towards your dog.

Plus not all dogs do well at dog parks some get too overwhelmed or overexcited.

If you see that your puppy is not enjoying their time at the dog park, or that its having a negative effect on their behavior at home, its best to find other ways to exercise them.

It gives more freedom of movement, while still maintaining safety.

Time outdoors is very important for this breed.

    Signs Of Maturity Phase

    Training:

While this should be a well-engrained protocol by now. If basic obedience/performance titles have not been earned, now is the perfect time to focus on those. Working together becomes fun and enjoyable.

    Growth Milestones:

By two years, the breed has usually finished growing, although males may take another year to put the finishing touches on their physical maturity, especially head development. In this stage, males and females who are not participating in Conformation should be neutered/spayed. This is around the time you should transition to an adult Golden Retriever dog food.

Maintaining breed standard weight may be tricky because of the caloric needs of adolescent energy. They may require more calories, but just as they are peaking with the need for more calories, their metabolism changes and weight management becomes a challenge.

Exercise demands continue to be high for this Olympic athlete. The personality and traits of the dog come into full bloom now, which may have gone underground during the previous stage. With a potpourri of emotional, physical, and mental changes in the first 1½ years, occasionally special personality traits take a hike. This is when the puppys head reattaches to the body just like a Rock em Sock em Robot, add Lewine and Cochran. But, dont despair, all of the pieces come together at the 2-year mark.

Most new or prospective puppy owners have lots of questions. Sometimes you just need a quick answer.

You can click the links above to jump straight to any section. But first, were going to look at the research thats needed before you get a puppy.

    Week Old Golden Retriever Puppy

8 week old Golden retriever puppy

A 2 week old golden retriever puppy is going to just have opened his eyes for the first time to see the world around him. At this age, he will not be able to walk far as he is still uncoordinated with his front and hind legs.

His food source should entirely be his mother, who should have easy access to her puppies, in addition to being well-fed herself. Nursing mothers need a high-calorie diet.

If you notice that there are pups in the litter not gaining weight as quickly as others, talk to your vet about supplements.

    Looking At Your Lifestyle

There are situations where it might be better to wait before buying a Golden puppy.

This doesnt mean youll never be able to get one! But, bringing a Golden Retriever puppy into a home that isnt ready can cause stress, frustration, and lead to puppies ending up in rescue centers.

If you have very tiny kids remember that Goldens are fairly large dogs and are very boisterous when young. Picking up a toddler and drying their tears for the tenth time before breakfast can become wearing.

Think about the exercise needs of an active dog. If you cant walk very far, this probably isnt the breed for you.

If you have a very small home, or live in an apartment, think carefully before adding a big dog to the mix.

These large dogs also need plenty of companionship. Theyre social, and can become depressed or anxious if theyre left alone for long periods of time.

    How To Train A Shih

While a golden retriever puppy can provide the perfect addition to your family, his bathroom accidents indoors are less welcome. To avoid smelly messes in your home, start your golden retriever’s house training as soon as possible. Early, positive potty training should be a breeze with this intelligent, gentle breed.

Can You Predict Your Puppys Bathroom Habits

8 Week Old Golden Retriever Puppy

If you stick to a schedule with your puppy, you can count on them using the toilet on a pretty regular basis. They will usually have to poop three to six times a day, but their urination habits might be harder to figure out.

A new puppys pottying habits depend on several factors when they last ate and drank, plus their recent activities. You can count on a young pup having to go:

    • Right when they wake up in the morning
    • As soon as they wake from a nap
    • Right before bed
    • Within a few minutes of eating or drinking
    • Immediately after a play session
    • Whenever theyre excited

Above and beyond those instances, your puppy will also need to go out at regular intervals throughout the day. Plan on taking your puppy out to their designated bathroom spot on a consistent schedule based on their needs.

Heres a sample schedule that works well for most puppies, but remember its just a guideline. Every puppy will be different.

    • At 8 weeks old every 30 minutes
    • At 10 weeks old every 45 minutes
    • At 12 weeks old every 1 to 1 1/4 hours
    • At 16 weeks old every 2 hours
    • At 20 weeks old every 3 hours
