Golden retrievers love to be active, and a training session can be a fun way to spend time with your golden.
In fact, golden retrievers need to train.

Golden retrievers have tons of energy and when that energy is directed at completing a task , they love it.

Around 199 dog obedience judges who are part of both the Canadian Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club were asked to fill out a long questionnaire that ranked different breeds in both their obedience and work ability, and it turned out that the agreement between the judges regarding which dogs are the easiest to train was high.
Amongst the easiest dogs to train, following only after the Border Collie, Poodle and German Shepherd, is the Golden Retriever. Number four out of a wide selection of dog breeds is impressive!

Don’t Play Tug With The Leash
If your dog is in the habit of pulling on the leash, it is very important to not pull back. Big dogs like golden retrievers tend to respond to pressure on their leashes with even more pressure, leading to a tug of war between you and your dog. That’s taking a bad habit and making it worse. Instead, stop and wait until your dog comes back to your side, or call him back by name. Don’t reel him in, but keep the leash slack and relaxed and wait for him to come.
How Long & How Often To Train Your Golden Retriever Puppy
Life is hectic with a new puppy, but heres the good news: you can have a well-behaved puppy and train them in as little as five minutes a day.
Puppies dont have long attention spans, so its actually unproductive to try to train them for more than five or ten minutes at a time.
In fact, when your puppy is young, its better to keep training sessions as short as two to five minutes.
This way, your puppy has fun the entire time and keeps a positive association with training sessions.
As far as how often to train them, having three to five of these short training sessions is recommended.
Now, you might be thinking, how am I going to train this wild puppy with such little training time?
Well, in reality, every moment with them is a teaching moment.
You spend the formal training sessions teaching them the basics, and then take advantage of little moments here and there to practice.
For example, lets say youre taking your puppy on a walk and youve been working on come and sit.
When you walk up the door you can ask your puppy to come, and then before you put the leash on, ask them to sit.
Then, when you get back inside, you ask them to sit while you take the leash off.
This isnt adding any real extra training time, but practicing behaviors as part of your everyday routine will help your puppy learn fast.

Difficulty Walking On Leash
Some Goldens either never really got the hang of leash training, werent ever trained, or have regressed due to poor reinforcement. Either way, its important to correct this behavior as soon as possible. While on a walk, if your pup goes wild, stop.
Wait until your pup calms down. Once they do, continue the walk. You will literally repeat this repeatedly. Granted, youll need ample amounts of time to make this successful. Try walking three times a day this way for a few weeks to see if the behavior improves.
Common Health Problems In Golden Retrievers
Like any purebred dog, Golden Retrievers may encounter some breed-related health problems throughout their lives. Often, Breed Clubs will also be able to provide advice on what tests your breed may need and where to get these done. Make sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening to reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by these upsetting conditions.

Scolding and shaming a golden retriever when they have an accident on the rug is not nearly as effective as offering praise as the dog will not understand.
Playtime is a wonderful reward for a golden retriever that has obeyed its owner. All dogs enjoy rough-housing or playing ball with their owners, and goldens are certainly no exception.
Playtime offers a chance for the dog to enjoy itself and bond with its owner increasing the chances they will want to please and decreasing the chance of disobedience.
Food rewards, while the first thing most dog owners think of as the best reward, truly are not the best choice. Dogs, especially larger dogs like golden retrievers, need to maintain a healthy weight and eat foods that are good for canines.
However, food rewards are used to train, and they do work well if the owner is careful as to what they feed their pets during training. It is safe to feed your pet the following as a reward:
- Cooked chicken
- Training treats from the pet store
- Baby carrots
Avoid foods high in fat, and never, ever, feed dogs chocolate as it is poisonous to them.

Today Im going to share just how easy this can be if you follow a few simple guidelines laid out in this post.

I also own a Golden retriever and before understanding a few important fundamentals, training did prove to be more difficult than it should have been. However, through research and help from others, I was quickly able to whip my dog into shape.

What Is The Biggest Concern With Training A Golden Retriever
The first thing you should teach your Golden Retriever is how to walk on a leash early on in their lives, as this is the one item they typically have trouble getting the hang of. Without learning the right leash rules early on in their lives, they can and definitely will pull on their leashes. Even so, their easy ability to be trained has made this breed the first choice for use as therapy and service dogs. Recently, Golden Retrievers have even been a top choice to work as police dogs, using their intelligence on search and rescue missions or as drug sniffers.

When they need to go, they need to go. You can start this housetraining process bywhen you see that theyre about to have an accidentgrabbing them and placing them in the correct area for potty. If this is the yard, then try and take them back to the same exact spot every time.

You will notice that some golden retrievers have health issues. This is genetic, and that can also make them hard to train sometimes. Its not exactly uncommon, but it can take a while until you train your dog properly.
It all comes down to adapting the way you train your dog in a meaningful way. Rest assured that it does make a lot of sense to change your training endeavor and yes, it will surely be worth it as you go along.
These dogs find it hard to be on a leash all day. Thats maybe the most challenging thing you have to teach such a dog. Other than that, its not hugely challenging to train a golden retriever.
Sure, it does take some getting used to at first. But your dog will follow each mechanic and guideline you offer.
So yes, it can work quite nicely, you just have to learn how to adapt all of this so you can get the best possible outcome. Is it simple to do? In most situations it does require plenty of time, so you have to think about that the best way that you can.
