Why Rescue A Shelter Dog

Adopt a Golden Retriever near Atlanta, GA

Because shelter dogs are full of love!

Is it because they know you saved them and love you harder for it?

I can’t say for certain, but yes.

Jokes aside, there are three things all shelter dogs need to thrive in their new home:

  • Love
  • Patient
  • Training
  • Older shelter dogs, generally 1+ years old, may have experienced a lot of trauma, which often results in one of 8 common behavioral issues:

  • Anxiety
  • Leash reactivity & barrier-related aggression
  • Constant whining
  • These issues are correctable! Your dog isn’t broken, they’re just damaged. You can fix them with enough love, patience, and a good training plan.

    A Christmas Message From Shasta

velveteen rabbitThe Skin Horsehad lived longer in the nursery than any of the others. He was so old that hisbrown coat was bald in patches and showed the seams underneath, and most of thehairs in his tail had been pulled out to string bead necklaces. He was wise, for he had seen a long succession of mechanical toys arrive to boast andswagger, and by-and-by break their mainsprings and pass away, and he knew thatthey were only toys, and would never turn into anything else. For nursery magicis very strange and wonderful, and only those playthings that are old and wiseand experienced like the Skin Horse understand all about it. “What is REAL?” asked theRabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzzinside you and a stick-out handle?” “Real isn’t how you aremade,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When achild loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY lovesyou, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked theRabbit. “Sometimes,” said the SkinHorse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind beinghurt.” “Does it happen all at once, likebeing wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?” “I suppose you arereal?” said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for hethought the Skin Horse might be sensitive. But the Skin Horse only smiled.

Th Golden Retriever Rescued From Turkey Arrives In Atlanta

Meet Clarence: one of the 30 golden retrievers that arrived in Atlanta on Sunday evening.

ATLANTA, Ga. – Since May, the Adopt a Golden Atlanta organization has worked to save dozens of Golden Retrievers from the streets, shelters and forests of Istanbul, Turkey. Sunday night, the 100th pup touched American soil as more rescued dogs arrived in Georgia.

This was the groups fifth international effort to save Golden Retrievers.

Yasemin Baban, a resident of Turkey, is the woman behind it all. She flew into Atlanta on Sunday and was there to watch the dogs arrive to their new home. The pups were transported from the airport to Pet Lodge in Alpharetta, where they were uncrated. Baban got to open the crate for the 100th dog.

Once the dogs are evaluated and bathed they will go straight to foster homes Monday afternoon, where they will live prior to adoption. Baban will be with the dogs all day as they begin to adjust to their new lives.

Fees also are used for behavioral training and boarding facilities.

Our application asks questions regarding your history with dogs, your lifestyle, and what you are looking for in a Golden Retriever. Once your payment and application have been received, it will be reviewed, and references will be contacted. You will be called for a phone interview and a home visit by one of our volunteers. ALL family members must be present for the home visit.

The decision to place one of our Goldens into an adoptive home is not one that we take lightly. We reserve the right to deny any application and may not disclose the reason for denial. We do not operate on a first-come first-served basis, as it is our goal to find the absolute best fit for both our dog and the adoptive family.

Caution: The Information Below Will Be Disturbing

China’s dog meat trade has been going on for decades. As you read through this account of the dog meat trade, you must keep in mind that this is not a cultural tradition and that there is a rapidly growing outcry against the practice not only internationally but from the Chinese people themselves. Please don’t paint the Chinese people with a broad brush.

The stopping of trucks and confiscating dogs on their way to a slaughter house is dangerous work that requires a large group of dedicated volunteers whose sole purpose is to save dogs from the horror in which they’ve been living and a very painful death.

Once there are enough volunteers at the scene, the dogs are confiscated and off-loaded. Some dogs have already perished and must be taken away. The remaining dogs go through a triage and sorted into groups according to their levels of health.

Even if golden retriever rescues were to bring 100% of the dog meat golden survivors over to the U.S., it would not end China’s dog meat trade. What will end it is pressure placed on China’s government by its own citizens and large animal rights groups, such as Humane Society International.

However, bringing the dogs over to the U.S. will support China’s internal anti-dog-meat trade movement and alleviate the pressure in the various shelters, and most importantly, we will have given so many goldens a second chance to live.

Thank You For Considering A Donation To Adopt A Golden Atlanta

Our volunteers give their time, their homes and their hearts to each and every golden that comes to us for help. Unfortunately, warm homes and loving hearts alone do not pay for the medical care and supplies our dogs need. A gift from you will mean so much. Every dollar you give will be used for the care of our Goldens whether it be for spaying and neutering, heartworm treatment and prevention, vaccinations, repair of injuries and treatment of diseases, rehabilitation and, quite honestly, anything that can help one of our Goldens become a healthy and happy member of a new family.

“Pawnote”: Donations made for the benefit of a specific dog, but whose financial needs have been met, will be applied for the benefit of by another AGA orphan dog in need.

Tips To Improve Your Adoption Experience

Adoption processes vary drastically from organization to organization, but here are some general tips that apply in most instances. Note that we’ll use the term “shelters” here for simplicity but it includes all types of rescue organizations.

  • See an animal online that you’d like to meet? Call the shelter before your visit to make sure the animal is still available. This especially applies for puppies, which are adopted out quickly.
  • Usually, you’ll need to get some paperwork in order: a photo ID, vaccination/medical records for any pets you currently have, possibly your vet’s contact info and a couple of personal references, and proof you’re allowed to have a pet .
  • If you need to provide contact info for your vet, let your vet know ahead of time. Otherwise, they may not release your information.
  • Many shelters require your current dogs to meet adoptive dogs. Your current dogs need to be up-to-date on vaccinations.
  • Some shelters require you to schedule a home visit to ensure a suitable living environment for the new animal.
  • If you have any questions about adopting an animal feel free to contact the PetLists team!

GRRA is a wonderful dog rescue/adoption organization run by hard working, loving volunteers. They focus on Golden Retrievers but they also rescue Golden mixes & Lab mixes. They hold an Adoption Day once a month where you can see and interact with the dogs. If you want to adopt, they will do a detailed interview and a home check then connect you with a volunteer who can help match you with a fury friend. Check out their website for available dogs or if you want to volunteer.I got my dog, Misty Seabreeze, from GRRA 8 years ago. Great dog. Great experience.

Volunteer level people seem great, but as so often happens the uppity up level people feel their power and it becomes about them instead of what is best for the dogs. Volunteers are used then insulted. Dogs are moved around in ways not in the dog’s best interest and don’t listen to front line volunteers. May be better organization to entrust your dog to if you have to give the dog up. I hope the organization is better than that but my one very negative experience illustrates what happens to groups when politics becomes more important than the mission.

    Life According To Crosby

    Dear Diary,

I know its been a while, but I have been very busy spending time with my new family since they adopted me back in June. You wouldn’t believe how fantastic my parents and human siblings are. My mom says that I love my people and that I dont like to be by myself, but to be perfectly honest I just cant get enough of them.

I have to tell you about the strangest but most awesome game ever Its called Hide and Seek. Here is how the game works: When my family and I go for a hike, my mom will have me stay with her and my human siblings will run down the trails and hide from me. As soon as mom screams “free” I get to take off at full speed to find the kids. Its like magic, one minute they are there and the next they aren’t. Oh, I love Hide and Seek!

Another one of my favorite activities is playing inwater and mud. Here are some before and after pictures from one of my mud adventures.

Before playing in the mud: I have to say Im a handsome puppy.

    After playing in the mud:

Before I go back to spending time with my family, I have to share some great news. Im going to the beach for spring break! WOOF! WOOF! Im so excited to play in the surf, rollaround in the sand and make new memories to share with you.

Overall, I have to say the last couple of months have been the most wonderful time in my entire life. I could not have asked for a better family or forever home. I am forever grateful to AGA for making all of my dreams come true. I truly am the luckiest dog.

    XOXO
