English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Easy To Train

Ryker & Mia’s first litter birth-6 months old

Because theyre so smart and love pleasing people, golden retrievers are easy to train.

Theyre sensitive and loving, so the best way to train them is through positive reinforcement, like rewarding them with a treat, toy, play or praise when they do something good.

And not only are they easy to train, but they love it.

My dog, Oliver, loves when I bust out the treat bag.

He knows hes going to be working with me, be challenged, and be rewarded with lots of treats and praise.

What could be better for a golden?!

Facial Structure And Features

Head

Another obvious difference between English Retrievers and American Retrievers is the shape of their head. The American Golden has an arched head structure and a broader skull, while the English Retriever has a larger and more balanced head.

They both have wide foreheads, but the American Retriever has a longer and deeper one than its English cousin.

Eyes

Their eyes also have slight differences. The American Golden Retriever has round eyes and fitted rims, with various shades, from medium brown to dark brown. If a dog doesnt have round eyes, then the AKC does not accept it as a Golden Retriever.

The BKC has similar standards, but they also require that the goldens eyes be reasonably distanced.

Ears

American Retrievers and English Retrievers also have slightly different ears. The American Golden has ears with a front edge that extends a bit above their eye level, so the tips of their ears are at cheek-level.

In contrast, the English Retrievers moderate-sized ears sit at eye-level. According to kennel club standards, both types of Retrievers ears need to cover their eyes when you pull them forward.

Neck

Finally, both dogs have a muscular neck thats not too long or short.

Myth #: English Creams Are Rare

The scummy BYBs and puppy mills that use English Cream/Crème, White Goldens, Platinum Goldens, etc. to describe their Golden Retrievers are just playing on your vanity. They use these terms to make you think that their puppies are special, rare, or worth more when compared to regular or American Goldens.

Yall, they are not rare, and your dog is not special because of its color or country of origin. Its special because its a Golden Retriever. Lighter shades of gold may have been less common in the US 15 or 20 years ago, but not now. I see just as many, if not more light Goldens around town than any other shade. American Reds are not rare or special either.

Please dont get a specific color because some scummy breeder said it was rare. These dogs are also NOT worth more than other Goldens. Dont fall for that and for the love of dog, dont spend more than $4,000 on a Golden . If you see a breeder advertising Rare White Goldens for $7,000, make like Simba and run away as fast as you can.

General Note on Color Breeding

Since I started this website as a general Dog World blog, I need to add that breeders using color terms to sell puppies of ANY breed are not good breeders. Silver Labs are not special. In fact, they are mix between a Lab and a Weimaraner. Anyone breeding for merle patterns on purpose is not ethical. Breeders focusing on blue anything are not ethical. For your sake and your future puppys sake, dont buy from a color breeder.

Myth #: English Cream Goldens Come From England

AKC Registered English Cream Golden Retriever For Sale Fredericksburg ...

With the name English Cream youd think the dogs come from England. They dont. American breeders with dogs imported from England dont call them English Creams, because again, they are still just Golden Retrievers. Actual Goldens bred in England come in the full range of colors, just like those in the photo above. Most of the dogs advertised as English Cream are from high volume breeders in Eastern Europe and Russia.

Why does the country of origin matter? Well, heres the thing: the HVBs sending dogs over here to feed the Cream Craze arent sending their best animals. Not by a long shot. The health testing standards in that part of the world are nowhere near as stringent as in the US and Canada, so orthopedic issues and ichthyosis are rampant. Most of the dogs have structural flaws that will almost definitely cause them pain when they get older. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but in general the animals exported to the US are not the best specimens. They keep the best for themselves.

And anyway, Goldens as a breed originated in Scotland, not England. I have a feeling the Scots dont appreciate their breed being attributed to the English.

Myth #: Golden Retrievers Can Be White

Speaking of white Purebred Golden Retrievers physically and genetically cannot be solid white. They dont have the genes. Put any light Golden, even an extremely light Golden in the snow or next to a Samoyed and youll see that they arent truly white. If they are, then they arent purebred. Sometimes unethical breeders mix Goldens and Great Pyrenees because Pyrs are white. Golden Retrievers can have white patches on their chest, but they cannot be solid white.

Heres a technical fun fact: Most Golden Retrievers are genetically black dogs . However, all Golden Retrievers are ee at the E color locus, which controls pigment production in the coat. The ee combination cancels out black and liver for the coat only and produces varying shades of gold. This is why most Goldens have a golden coat, but black or brown pigment in their eye rims, nose, and paw pads. The shade of gold is controlled by the intensity locus.

Look how dark Eevees nose, lips, and eye rims are compared to her coat. This is the physical expression of her being genetically black which I know from her DNA testing from Embark but ee at the E locus.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not Rare

English Cream goldens are rather common across the world and are becoming more common in America.

Dont let fancy names like, Rare White European Golden Retrievers, or, Exquisite Platinum Imported Golden Retrievers make you think that they are more rare or valuable than they are .

If a breeder is selling you on the fact that their dogs are rare, run away.

If theyre talking about how their dogs are healthy family dogs with good temperaments, then youre probably on the right track.

As far as how popular each color is, we did a study and asked 600 golden retriever owners what color their dog is.

Heres what they said:

Gold: 51.6%

Light gold : 31.5%

Red: 16.8%

As you can see, light gold, or cream-colored, golden retrievers are the second-most common color after gold.

Coat Color And Grooming

The English cream retrieverâs breed standard permits any shade of gold or cream coat color, which is neither mahogany nor red.

This means these dogs donât necessarily have to have a cream or platinum coat. However, platinum dogs are highly popular and there is always a higher demand for puppies with a paler coat.

The English cream has a medium-length, silky, water-resistant double coat that sheds moderately all year round. This breed also goes through a heavy shed twice a year â in the spring and fall.

Youâll have to brush your dog at least three times a week to prevent mats and tangles and keep his coat in tip-top condition.

When it comes to bathing, you can bathe your English cream once in a couple of months or more often if he gets very dirty. If you need to bathe your dog more often, use a hypoallergenic natural dog shampoo that wonât damage your dogâs skin or coat.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Need Lots Of Grooming

the strange truth about English Cream Golden Retrievers

English Cream goldens have beautiful coats, but they do require lots of care and grooming.

Youll need to brush them several times per week and bathe them 1-2 times per month, depending on if they swim or play outside a lot.

In addition to their coats, youll need to regularly brush their teeth, trim their nails, take care of their paws, and clean their ears.

English Cream Golden Retriever Vs American Golden Retriever

As I touched on earlier, the white retriever is simply a different type of golden retriever.

Since they are essentially the same breed, there truly isnt very much difference between an English cream golden retriever and an American golden retriever. In general, they will have the same temperament and exercise requirements. They will both shed profusely and will need similar amounts of mental stimulation.

However, there are still a few key differences that are worth noting here. The largest and most obvious one is appearance. Instead of having a yellow-toned coat color, the white retriever has, as you might imagine, a cream-toned white coat. There can be some shading variation within this category, but not very much.

There are also some other physical differences. These include blockier, broader heads, bigger bones, and darker skin than traditional goldens. The white retriever variation has a more rounded eye shape, whereas traditional goldens have darker, more almond-shaped eyes.

There is also a slight difference between the two in terms of size. The breed standard states that male English cream golden retrievers should be from 22 to 24 inches tall, while females are between 20 and 22 inches tall. On the other hand, the breed standard for traditional golden retrievers states that males should be 22 to 23 inches in height, while females are anywhere from 21.5 to 22.5 inches tall.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Have A Lifespan Of 10

Many people think that English Cream goldens live longer than other types of goldens.

The lifespan of a golden retriever does not necessarily have to do with the color of the coat or the type of golden retriever.

The more important thing to consider if you want a golden retriever whos likely to have a long, happy life is to find a quality breeder that breeds healthy dogs.

Yes, you may find many English Cream golden retriever breeders breed healthy dogs, but you also may find other golden retriever breeders produce healthy pups as well.

English Vs American Golden Retriever: Original Reason For Breeding

You may be wondering if there is a difference in the breeding of the English golden retriever versus the American golden retriever, and there is, in a certain capacity. For example, English golden retrievers are bred for their luxurious cream colored coats, while American golden retrievers are bred for their capable hunting abilities. However, both dogs share a proclivity for hunting, so they are bred for the same thing in many ways.

Dont Expect Them To Protect Your Valuables

Dont expect your English Cream to serve as a watchdog. These dogs are more likely to show a burglar where you keep your valuables. That said, however, they do have a healthy bark and can serve as a deterrent if a prowler comes around.

English Creams, like American Goldens make great family pets. If youve been considering adding one to your family, be sure to find a reputable breeder and dont get fooled into paying more than for an American Golden based on color alone.

English Vs American Golden Retriever: Health And Average Lifespan

Golden Retrievers have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. American Goldens live for 10 to 11 years, while their English counterparts live for around 12 years.

Besides lifespan, all Retrievers are prone to a few common diseases and genetic disorders that you should watch out for. These include:

  • Eye diseases such as cataracts
  • Elbow and hip dysplasia
  • Mast cell tumor

Some people think the coat color of an American Golden Retriever plays a role in health. Thats a myth: your dogs health depends on lifestyle factors, like diet and exercise, and genetics.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not From England

No, most English Cream goldens youll find in America are not from England.

Just like French fries are not from France.

All golden retrievers originated from Scotland in the mid-1800s when Lord Tweedmouth bred a Tweed water spaniel and a yellow wavy-coated retriever.

Most American breeders of these goldens either breed dogs from here in the States or import their dogs from all over the world, including:

  • The Netherlands

So how did English Cream goldens get their misleading name?

According to Bev Brown, the Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club, were the first ones to write up the breed standard.

And in the early 1900s, all dog shows in Britain were held in England.

So in America, we called the champions of those dog shows, English Champions.

The English seems to have stuck with goldens that look like the English champions in those days, so 100 years later were calling them English Cream Golden Retrievers.

English Goldens are known to be calm and mature with proper training. They arent particularly hyper or overly energetic. By contrast, American Goldens are known to have more energy and be a bit more stubborn. Some owners also find that, prior to training, theyre a bit more boisterous in their behavior.
