How Much Should A Golden Retriever Eat The Hidden Calories That Make Golden Retrievers Fat

Two of the biggest dangers for Golden Retrievers are table feeding and treats. Heres the problems. Most responsible owners do the calculations and check with their vet to know how much to feed their dog and the put that much foo0d down for their pup. But Golden Retrievers are so darn cute, they come to the table while the family eats and look hungry and forlorn. Soon the weakest member of the family slips the dog food. This re-enforces the fact that the dog has trained the family to give it food.

Then, the family may have some leftovers. Give the dog a little spaghettihe love it. Give him a little ice cream as a treat. The problem is that this food is being given ON TOP of the dogs daily requirements. Also, the dog is getting food that is not good for dogs. Over time, this can add up to a fat and unhealthy Golden Retriever.

The second problem is treats. Treats have become important to dogs and owners. We stared giving our dog a Puperoni every night at 9:00. He loved them. Eventually he would block the path through the room after 9:00 of he didnt get his treat. Treats are very high in. calories. Give your dog the smallest piece possible. Your dog will see even a small piece as a treat and will enjoy it.

What Foods Are Bad For Golden Retrievers

Most dog food brands are perfectly safe for Golden Retrievers, but there are some things to avoid. Grain-free diets have been directly linked to heart disease in Golden Retrievers, though ironically theyre often the first diet to be recommended. We also recommend avoiding any dog food that is low in quality but budget-friendly, as theyre most likely made with cheap filler ingredients.

People food should absolutely be avoided, especially if its been cooked with onions, spices, and other potentially toxic ingredients. If you must feed your Golden any people food, it should only be small chunks of white chicken meat or cooked beef, with no spices or flavors added. People food is not healthy for dogs and should not be fed to your dog, no matter how much he begs.

Every Golden Retriever Has A Different Metabolism

One of the dangers of giving a standardized amount of food to your dog is that we stop continually monitoring our dogs weight. Every Golden Retriever is different. We have some Golden Retrievers that eat only 1 1/2 cups of food per day total and we have others that eat 5-6 cups of food per day. Just like people, every Golden Retriever has a different metabolismand that changes. Like humans, the older a dog gets the slower their metabolism normally is.

Their metabolism is also based on their activity level. Obviously the more active your Golden Retriever is, the faster their metabolism is and the more they can eat. Our average adult and puppy Golden Retriever gets 2 1/2 3 cups of TLC Whole Life Puppy Food;to eat total per day. But thats average. Some will need more and some will need less. We recommend feeding your puppy twice a day. We feed them after training them at around 9 am and a second time at around 3-4 pm. The same schedule can be kept when they;become adults. You could just feed them once a day, but the Golden Retrievers would rather eat twice a day! As your pup gets older, you can move the second feeding to later and even feed your adult after 5 pm.

How much should a 5 month old golden retriever puppy eat?

How Often You Should Feed Your Golden Puppy

A puppy should remain with his littermates and mother until hes eight weeks old.

Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. So youll split the amounts suggested into each daily feeding at the same scheduled intervals every day.

Feeding at the same times every day will help the puppys ability to digest his food and for him to have a source of energy throughout the day.

From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding.

After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm.;

Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines.

Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted.

Give him about 15 or 20 minutes to eat, then pick up any food thats left. Most puppies will learn to eat while the foods down.;

If he misses a couple of meals and has no interest in the food, consult with your vet to determine whether anythings wrong.

Dont free-feed your golden retriever puppy.;If you leave the food down all the time, hell probably overeat and become overweight.;

This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight.

How Much To Feed A Golden Retriever Adult

Golden Retriever adults should eat around twice a day. What is more important is the portion size of those meals. The portion size will vary depending on age, weight, activity level, and health conditions of your Golden Retriever. After being spayed or neutered, your Golden Retriever may not need as many calories so consulting with your veterinarian would be a good idea.

Golden Retrievers reach their full height and weight between 12 and 18 months old. They will usually weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. When your Golden reaches adulthood, their caloric intake should decrease.;

During adulthood, they should be eating two scheduled meals a day. If they do get hungry between meals, give them a good, healthy snack that will tide them over until the next meal. Check out our article Best Dog Treats for Golden Retrievers for some healthy treat ideas.

But Why Is Homemade Food Specifically Beneficial For Golden Retrievers

Best Foods For Your Goldens, And What You Definitely ...

The NZ Veterinary Nursing Association reports that Goldens Retrievers are among the dog breeds highly prone to developing food allergies.

Why is this important to know? Well, food allergies in Goldens tend to manifest themselves on their skin, most likely into a condition known as Atopic Dermatitis. This allergy skin disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and it can cause mild to severe itching, which, as a result of scratching or rubbing, often leads to further skin damage, irritation, infection, and discomfort.

Reducing allergic reactions start with a diet that has the vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals to decrease inflammatory responses, and homemade dog food has those critical components. Whats more important is that home cooking for your dog allows you to pick only those ingredients that you know wont cause an allergic reaction on your Golden Retriever.

If you dont know what foods your Golden Retrieve is allergic to, read our Dog Allergy Test guide, so you can identify which foods to avoid in his next meal.

How Long To Feed Golden Retriever Puppy Food

Till your Golden Retriever is not 1 year old you have to feed him the puppy food then once he is gown up to 1 year old you can switch to adult dog food! Transitioning from your puppy food to adult food is quite difficult you can refer to the above section where Ive mentioned the easiest way to transition your dog food.

Calorie Needs Decrease Around 1 Year

When your Golden Retriever puppy turns 1 year old, they should be most of the way done growing. That means its time to switch them to an adult dog food thats less calorie-dense than puppy food.

While overfeeding your puppy can cause joint and bone problems, overfeeding your adult Golden Retriever causes even more problems. Obesity is just as damaging to dogs as it is to humans.

Some health issues that can be caused by obesity in dogs can include:

  • Heat intolerance
  • Liver disease or dysfunction

Counting The Macros For Your Golden Retrievers

Have you ever been on a diet?

If you have, then, you must be know that it’s not counting the calories that matter—it is the source that does. If you eat more junk food on a diet, chances are that you wont lose weight or feel well even if youve just had 1200 kcal per day.

Same is the case for your Golden Retriever.

This essentially means that calories you get from your food come from the three vital macronutrients—carbs, proteins, and fats. Your body needs them all in adequate quantities to thrive.

And so does your Golden Retrievers.

However, macros need to be adjusted keeping in mind the dogs height, age, level of activity, etc.

Feeding Your Puppy A Homemade Diet

While they might sound very similar, the BARF diet is not the same as the homemade diet, which is typically a cooked human food diet.

Here, you simply must work closely with your veterinarian to ensure your puppy is receiving sufficient nutrients.

Including the right calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, which is critical for bone growth and skeletal development.

How To Know If Youre Feeding Them Too Much

As mentioned, puppies, especially Golden Retriever puppies, should appear lankier than youd expect, not chubby.

This means that they should have a slimmer profile wherein you can feel the ribs when you touch them but not see them. They should also have a bit of a waist.

Therefore, overfeeding your puppies can result in several health conditions that will become more apparent as they grow older.

Some of the conditions they can develop due to overfeeding are:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Bloating

They will also end up having shorter lifespans because of ill-health. So, how can you tell when your puppy is being fed too much?

Dogs, especially puppies, have strong appetites but this doesnt mean that you should always feed them when they are. Puppies, in general, dont often recognize that theyre already full so theyll keep eating as long as the food is readily available.

This can result in them being overweight or sometimes even downright obese which you can tell when theyre too large or heavy for their breed.

Body Condition Score

As mentioned, puppies arent supposed to be round and chubby they have to have a bit of waist to them. Aside from this, you should be able to feel their ribs without seeing them. Their figure should be an hourglass one.

Feeding Your Puppy Optimally Is Necessary To Avoid Rapid Weight Gain

Although chubby puppies may look really cute, it is better to avoid too much weight gain. Overweight puppies are more likely to develop bone or orthopedic problems.

You can easily check if your puppy is overweight with two simple tests. You should touch the puppys ribcage lightly. If you are able to feel the ribs then the puppy is not overweight. But if you cannot feel the ribs then your puppy is overweight.

You should also stand up and look down directly at your puppy while it is standing. If the abdomen is well defined then the puppy is not overweight. But if the abdomen is bulging or rounded, then your puppy is overweight.

You should also take your puppy on regular visits to the veterinarian to keep track of its weight and overall health.

It is important to keep your golden retriever puppys weight in the right range because this will prevent the occurrence of certain medical conditions to which golden retrievers are susceptible. If you can maintain the right weight, then there is a better chance for your pup to avoid problems faced by golden retrievers such as elbow and hip dysplasia, cancer, eye problems and cardiac conditions.

On the other hand, if your pup is not gaining waiting even though you are feeding it the right amount of food, you should then take it to the veterinarian. Lack of weight gain could be a sign of parasites, congenital problems or some other health issue.
