How To Identify An Overweight Golden Retriever

bringing home my 8 week old golden retriever puppy! (first days)

Use your eyes and hands. If you can see her ribs, shes too skinny. But if you cant feel them, shes too fat!

A survey in 2012 showed that 62.7% of Golden Retrievers in America are either obese or overweight.

While it might look cute or funny, overweight dogs actually have shorter lifespans. Being excessively chubby shaves off two years and causes health issues.

How Many Puppies Do Golden Retrievers Have

If this is your first time becoming a Golden Retriever grandparent, you might want to know what youre about to get into!

For a Golden Retriever, youre going to expect the average litter size for this breed to be around eight puppies, but can vary from four to twelve for one litter!

However, there have been instances where a pregnant Golden Retriever has had as little as one puppy and as many as 17! Your veterinarian can definitely help you prepare better for a specific number.

When To Wean A 4 Week Old Golden Retriever Puppy

When your golden retriever puppy has reached 4 weeks, you should notice an increase in his energy level. He will still need a lot of rest, but should be getting around a little more. A 4 week old Golden Retriever puppy is not going to be weaned yet either, but you can try to see if he would be interested in puppy food.

Impact Of Nutrition On Breed Puppy Growth

Puppies that dont get enough to eat or are fed a low-quality diet may not grow properly. However, in developed countries, its far more likely that a dog is being overfed. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy.

How Many Calories Does A Golden Retriever Puppy Need

Even though Golden Retrievers are known to be active dogs, they can gain weight quite easily if their diet is not correct. To make the decision about how many calories you should be feeding your golden retriever, you need to look at his weight, age, and level of activity.

  • When he is two months old, you should give him 1 ½ cups of food daily
  • When he is seven months old, give him 3 to 4 cups of food daily
  • Adult Golden Retrievers that are active, require about 1,300 to 1,700 calories daily
  • Senior Golden retrievers require about 900 calories daily

Please consider these to be a guide and consult your veterinarian if you are unsure about anything.

Another method you can use to find the right amount of food to feed your golden retriever is the RER method.; This is the resting energy requirements of your dog, found by multiplying his weight in kilograms to the power of ¾ by 70.

For instance, if you have a puppy that weighs 10 kg all you need to do is multiply this amount by the power of ¾; by 70. You should get an RER of 70 X 10kgs ¾ = 400 calories per day.

How Big Should A Golden Retriever Collar Be

Puppy Size: Get the small Blueberry collar for a 12-week old Golden Retriever puppy. If you are getting your puppy at a younger age than 12 weeks, use either a buckle collar for the short-term or use the Country Brook Martingale discussed above. Is A Flat Or Rolled Collar Better

Before I go into what is better out of these 2 collars, I think it is first important to explain exactly what each of them is. That way we are on the same page throughout this conversation!

So a flat collar is the most common type of collar that you may find on most puppies and young dogs. Its also the collar you are probably most familiar with as they are cheap and seem to do the trick in most cases. Below I have included an image of a flat collar for you to take a look at:

Then you also have another type of collar which is also very commonly found used on most dogs too. This is called a rolled collar which looks very similar to the flat collar but it has a rolled sausage-like shape to it and can be used for the same purpose in most cases.

I have inserted an image here of a rolled collar:

How Do I Train My 8 Week Old Golden Retriever

To train an 8-week old Golden Retriever, initiate him to being gently handled, and teach name recognition. Train him early with simple commands using positive reinforcement techniques. Let him know that you are the alpha, be consistent, dont yell or use physical punishment, and discipline at the moment.

When Will My Puppy Become An Adult

Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed.

Dont be too concerned about your puppys weight unless theyre way off the average. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Its most important to know your puppy so that you can tell if theres a problem.

Golden Retriever Growth Stages

While charts are helpful for tracking your dogs growth, pure numbers may not allow you to visualize what to expect from your dog at any given point in their development.

To that end, we put together a brief look at various stages of your dogs growth. This will prepare you for what to expect at that phase of development, so there wont be any surprises and youll know if something is wrong.

How Can I Tell If My Golden Retriever Is Slowing Down

Golden Retriever FEMALE 8 Weeks old

Your dog is slowing down, the changes may be subtle, but you need to pay attention to how your dog gets up or lays down and uses the stairs. If your dog shows hesitation or has stiffness, or if a change in weather makes it worse, it could be a sign of early arthritis. Older dogs tend to sleep more and have less energy.

Attachment Points For Leash

Selecting harnesses according to their attachment points depends on your golden retrievers temperament.

Typically harnesses come with two attachment points, either at the front clip near the chest or the back clip.

So in case, your goldie is a heavy puller, you can go with the harness that has a front attachment point that helps prevent any pulling action.

While if your goldie has a calm temperament, you can choose a harness with a back attachment point.

However, many harnesses come with dual-clip attachment points both back and front.

And I prefer using the harnesses that have dual-clip as there isnt any variation in the value, and you can use it as per your needs.

I use them too for each of my dogs.

Weeks 12 Weeks Socialization

During the socialization process, the Golden Retriever will start to exploreand fill out its body as it finds its place in the world. This particular period in a Golden Retrievers life is essential for its growth.

Although some breeders tend to keep the pup with his or her mother, there is some other speculation of letting them loose and into the wild for exploration .

During this period, the Golden Retriever will also start eating some solid foods and be able to play and start to house train! This is a very developmental period indeed!

From three to twelve weeks, a Golden Retriever can reach up to 22 or 23 lbs in size !

How To Feed Golden Retriever Puppy

So that your puppy can focus on the business of eating, make sure he eats at the same time every day. Each meal should last between 20-30 minutes. If he doesnt finish the meal within the time allowed, you can pick him up and serve the same amount of food to each person.

When should you increase his food allowance? Hell finish every kibble at all three meals. If he does, you can increase his food portion. At first, start with a 1/3 cup. If hes still hungry, go up to a scant 1/2 Cup.

Some pups are extremely picky eaters and will eat all of their food. While others may be more picky and just nibble on their food, some are more savvier. Some puppies have eating spurts. They will eat faster or slower at certain times. Its okay to relax. Do not worry if your puppy is overweight. Keep him lean.

Do Golden Retrievers Still Grow After Being Neutered

We Got A Puppy! â® Golden Retriever Puppy Vlog

A common question is whether your golden retriever will continue to grow after being neutered. This is not a simple question to answer. The short answer is that yes, your puppy can still grow after being neutered.

A longer answer is that you want to wait until your dog has fully grown before you neuter him. There has been recent information that has come about that has shown that dogs who are neutered before they are finished growing are more likely to develop hip dysplasia, arthritis, and, especially in golden retrievers, cancer.

If you wait, you will also not need to worry about whether your dog will continue to grow.

Feeding An 8 Week Old Puppy

Puppies need feeding much more frequently than older dogs, not because they cant eat a whole days food in one go, but because if they do, it upsets their tummies. And looking after a puppy with diarrhea is no fun.

So, dont be tempted to let your puppy keep eating just because he seems hungry. Which he will, because Labrador puppies are always hungry! You have to ration out his food for him. You need to know how much your puppy needs to eat in a 24 hour period, and then divide that amount between at least 4 meals.

The principles are the same for any medium to large breed of dog, though of course youll need to adjust quantities. Once you have the whole food thing under control, if you havent already decided, youll need to think about what you are going to do with your puppy when you go to bed tonight

Can You Feed Your Golden Retriever Puppy Raw Food

8 weeks old!!! in 2020

Some dog owners prefer to feed they are golden retrievers raw food as opposed to kibble. A diet that is raw means that you only give him raw bones, row organs, raw meats, as well as fruits and vegetables. Many consider this raw diet to be better than kibble.

In all truth, kibble may not be ideal for your Golden because dogs are carnivores who require high amounts of protein. Many of the kibble on the market has approximately 60% carbohydrates.

Dogs need more protein and fats for good nutrition. When dogs consume too much carbohydrates, they tend to have health problems from being overweight.;

However, there are downsides to a raw diet because one must be careful about the way the food is prepared and stored.

You would need to think about the bacteria like salmonella and E Coli coming from the uncooked liver, meat, and eggs which can affect your dog and even be fatal if not handled properly. It can also cause issues with the pancreas if introduced too abruptly.

When your dog is on a raw diet, the amount of food you give him would need to be adjusted, as he may actually need to eat less. Many people who give dogs raw food only feed them once or twice per day.;

Why Is A Harness Better Than A Collar

Both dog harnesses and collars have been used for hundreds of years.

Although the collar has been more common over the centuries, sledding dogs of the frozen North and drafting dogs like the Rottweiler and Bernese Mountain Dog have been harnessed to pull sleds and carts since the 18th century.

However, the medical data available to us now shows the full extent of damage a collar can cause your dog.

A collar may hurt a dogs neck through long-term pulling and jerking or through a sudden accident that creates a whiplash effect on the dogs neck. This may result in a severe trachea injury, hypothyroidism, ear, eye, and nerve damage.

On the other hand, a harness envelopes your dogs shoulders and upper body and alleviates pressure on the dogs throat.; Therefore, a harness is far safer for your pup than a collar.

The Golden Retriever growth charts can alert you to the common causes of slow growth. Occasionally it comes down to a change in the dog diet. Ensure your dog likes his food and that he eats frequently.

Growth Distinctions Of Different Golden Retrievers

There are three basic types of Golden Retriever: British, Canadian, and American.

American and British Goldens are similar. However, American Goldens tend to be less stocky and muscular, instead having a leaner appearance. They may weigh a bit less as well.

Canadian Goldens look a bit different from their cousins, but thats largely because their coats are shorter and less feathery. They tend to be taller as well, often standing an inch or two higher than their counterparts.

Puppies under three months old probably dont have their vaccinations, so exercise in public should be avoided. One way to help your puppy get exercise is by having them on a leash with you. Walk at a normal pace. Walk the amount of time required for the puppys age. Stop to rest if your puppy keeps sitting down and continue when they get back up.

The Growth Of Your Golden Retriever Puppy

Golden Retrievers are a widely sought-after breed of dog. The reason for their popularity lies in their versatility. Goldens make great family pets because of their natural dispositions, but they are also good hunting and show dogs.

A Golden Retriever’s growth throughout different stages of its puppyhood can be so irregular that it’s easy to wonder if something is wrong. In general, the answer is no; growth is not linear for any breed of dog but instead occurs in spurts throughout the first 24 months of life. Nevertheless, it is important to carefully monitor your puppy during this delicate stage of its life, so it is both fun and educational to know the growth sequence of your Golden Retriever.
