These coarser hairs are called guard hairs. The slightly darker guard hairs will push through the softer puppy coat to form an adult Golden Retrievers outer coat, while the puppy fur remains, forming the Goldies undercoat.

Where Do Color Variations Come From
Typically, you will expect that two dogs of similar shape,size, and appearance should produce puppies that fall within that range ofsimilarity.
There are times, however, when recessive genes or gene mutations can create an outlier. This outlier might occur in one of the puppies or the entire litter. Mutations typically do not get passed on to the third generationalthough there are some situations where the mutation becomes permanent.
Recessive genes, however, are a different story.
Two parents carrying the recessive gene will give theopportunity for that gene to show itself in one of their litter.
Breeders crossed Golden Retrievers with a variety of other breeds in the 1800s looking for the perfect hunting companion. Many of those dogs would have had red or black coats.

Let us start off by saying that earwax, also called cerumen, is completely normal. Its a natural and normal component of your dogs ear canal. Its nothing to worry about or stress over.
In fact, ear wax is important because it cleans your dogs ears. The cerumen or the ear wax is produced by specialized glands in the ear and has a specific function. It collects dead cells, debris, bacteria, dirt, and pollen from your dogs ears! Once the ear wax has cleaned your dogs ears it simply glides out.
But, you do need to worry about the change in the color of your dogs cerumen. Any change in color, smell, or even quantity of cerumen can be a sign of a disease and a serious ear problem.

Ear wax can range anywhere from yellow to brown or dark brown, depending on how dirty your dogs ears are.

Golden Retrievers Colors And Your Clothes
One thing you will not learn until its too late is that your furniture and your clothes will change color; they will become whatever color your golden retriever is.
Hair everywhere will be the new slogan for your house, and it will become a fact of life. I will discuss solutions for your pups shedding later, but I truly found out that wearing clothes that are some shades of gold and yellow really helpful as the hairs tend to just blend in.
There is another approach to this; wear really dark clothes so you can easily spot all the hair and remove it. Im not a fan of this approach because 1- Its really time consuming, and 2- you will never get rid of all the hair.
This is why I always wear some shades of yellow, gold, white, and orange. I wear light clothes on purpose to hide the hairs I might have forgotten to remove, because I know they are there, and instead of fighting it, I just learned to do my best and live with the fact that I cant win against hair.
You know what they say, if you cant fight the current, swim with it.
