Why Should You Adopt

Helping Golden Retriever Give Birth to 11 Puppies

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Bc Spca Seizes Neglected Golden Retriever Puppies Being Kept In Freezing Temperatures

My Golden Retriever when we found her in a shelter. Poor girl.

The BC SPCA seized two adult Golden retrievers and six puppies, along with a pregnant Australian shepherd, from a property in the North Okanagan on Dec. 21. The dogs were being kept in substandard conditions and exposed to freezing temperatures.

When our animal protection officers arrived in response to a complaint, they found dogs and puppies in a basement without heat or insulation, says Eileen Drever, senior officer, protection and stakeholder relations for the BC SPCA. The puppies were shivering and huddled for warmth, they had no bedding except for a bit of dirty hay and there was a build-up of feces and puddles of urine throughout the enclosure. There was a small amount of dog food on the floor, but the only accessible water was dirty and in an unclean bowl.

Drever says the puppies were also exposed to numerous injurious objects in the enclosure, including sharp edges of the plywood and makeshift fencing used to separate the areas.

In another area of the basement, blocked off by plywood, SPCA constables found the Australian shepherd tethered by a chain to a wall and two more Golden retriever puppies, who were also shivering in the freezing temperature.

The nine dogs and puppies were rushed to a veterinarian for examination and are now in SPCA care. They are not available for adoption at this time.

Donate to help give these animals and others like them a safe and warm Christmas.

What Are The Golden Retriever Colors

The breed was first considered to be a yellow variety of Flat-Coated Retrievers but was recognized as a separate breed, the Yellow or Golden Retriever, in 1912. A few of these dogs had come to America by way of Lord Tweedmouths sons by 1900, but the AKC did not register them as a separate breed until 1927.

Only Purchase A Puppy From A Reputable Breeder

We encourage you to adopt, but if you have your heart set on a Golden Retriever puppy and are unable to find one at a rescue or shelter, it is essential that you purchase a puppy only through a reputable breeder.

  • Many dogs available at pet stores or online through both private websites and classified sites such as Craigslist originate from puppy mills.
  • Puppy mills are large commercial operations that put profit above the well-being of the dog. You can think of them as the equivalent of factory farms for dogs. They are often filthy, overcrowded, and are cruel or negligent in their treatment of dogs. Lack of adequate access to food, water, socialization, and veterinary care is typical. There are estimated to be 10,000 of these commercial breeders in the US alone.

Did You Know

  • Most shelter and rescue dogs make wonderful pets and do not have anything wrong with them. Dogs are most often relinquished to animal shelters because of people reasons, such as cost, lack of time, allergies, or lifestyle changes , and not because of something wrong with the dog. Sometimes a lack of obedience training results in a dog being relinquished, but this is often easy to address by enrolling the dog in a basic obedience class. Many shelters/rescues will have already started this work for you!
  • You can get purebred dogs at shelters or through breed-specific rescues.
  • Breed is not a guarantee of temperament or personality. Every dog is an individual. The best way to determine if a dog will be the right fit for your home is to meet them and observe their personality, rather than relying on breed stereotypes.
  • Puppies are a lot of work! Consider an adult dog, which may better fit your lifestyle and can require significantly less work than a puppy. Plus, since their personality is more formed, you will know exactly what you are getting.
  • There is no such thing as a deal when it comes to buying a dog. Bargain puppies are often poorly bred and may suffer from serious health problems requiring expensive veterinary care. For example, Rosie, who was a $875 bargain but had to be relinquished to GRRR because the owners couldnt afford a $6,000 surgery due to poor breeding.

Who We Are

Adopt a Golden Atlanta is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to finding warm, loving homes for golden retrievers to keep them from becoming strays or adding to the shelter population. To date we have rescued over 4,500 dogs at a cost of over $2,200 per dog. We do not reject any golden, no matter their medical or behavioral needs and work tirelessly to find that perfect fit with a “furever family”.
