Answer: Yes English Cream Golden Are Golden Retrievers With A Cream Or White Coat
Though the English Creams is a golden Retriever it has a different coat. The coat appears cream or white thats why most people call them the white goldens.
It is also known as the rare white European retriever or a white golden retriever and some breeders call them exquisite platinum imported goldens.
Even with all these fancy names, an English Cream Golden retriever is the same breed as a Golden retriever with a different shade of either white or cream. Most breeders use these fancy names to mislead buyers so that they can charge more for European Goldens compared to what they charge for American golden retrievers.
Question 2: What is the life expectancy of an English cream golden retriever?
History Of The White Golden Retriever
It is well known that the Golden breeds have roots in Europe and Scotland as far back as the late 1860s. Goldens were originally breed by a British Aristocrat, Lord Tweedmouth, who mixed a yellow-colored Retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel. Today, the Tweed Water Spaniel breed is extinct, but they were previously known for being enthusiastic retrievers used for hunting and calm, loyal dogs in the home. Their descendants continue to hold these characteristics. Though this cross breeding is where the Golden Retriever originated, there are now various colors of Retrievers that stem from this common ancestor.
White Golden Retrievers are the perfect dog for families and make the perfect family pet. Their calm temperament and sweet disposition mixed with their intelligence and loyal nature prove to be a combination that is easy to love.

Please share your thoughts and comments below. I would love to hear from you!
Origin Of Golden Retrievers
The first known Golden Retrievers came from Scotland in the mid-1800s. Baron Tweedmouth of Guisachan was one of the first breeders of this breed.
Another interesting aspect that we know is that the Golden Retriever was born from the crossing of two breeds. The two breeds were the Wavy Coated Retriever and the Tweed Water Spaniel, both extinct today. As a result of this crossbreeding, the first four puppies of traditional Golden Retrievers and English Cream Golden Retrievers were born.
The American line of Golden Retrievers first arrived from Canada. Although physical and genetic changes have occurred in the dog over the years, the original line remains intact. So when you hear American Golden Retriever or English Cream Golden Retriever, dont think they are two different breeds.
Are English Golden Retrievers Smaller
While English Cream Golden Retrievers are the shortest of the three countrys Golden Retrievers. The White Golden Retriever stands at around 20 and 22 inches tall, with males measuring in about 2 inches taller than the females of the breed.
In addition, to a difference in size, a female White Golden Retriever will also weigh slightly less than a male dog with males coming in between 65 to 75 pounds and female English Golden Retrievers weighing around 55 to 65 pounds .
Boys will also have a bigger blocker head than their feminine counterpart.
Personality: Are English Cream Golden Retrievers More Mellow
Yes. Typically, English Cream Retrievers are calmer than their American counterparts, but that doesnt mean they have lower activity levels, especially as a young pup. But overall, theyre easier to train.
In general, Golden Retrievers are known for having that puppy-like trait throughout their life, but English Cream Goldens are said to mature faster, especially when a lot of time and attention is placed into training and socialization.
That doesnt mean they need less attention and love. No matter what type of Goldie it is, theyll always look for affection, like when it comes to scary things, like escalators:
All Golden Retrievers are kind, loving, and great with children. Theyre extremely affectionate and gentle. For these reasons, theyre known to be great therapy and service dogs.
These social pupper-flies are great with other dogs and cats even if introduced later in life. They are a very patient breed and tend to get along with all people and pets.
Unfortunately, their social nature makes them susceptible to social anxiety. Theyd rather always have someone with which to engage.
Like what we mentioned earlier, English Cream Golden Retrievers are highly trainable. Theyre intelligent, loyal, and are eager to please their owners.
Youll be able to quickly teach your pup commands like Sit, Stay, and Come. With positive reinforcement and a few treats, almost nothing is impossible with this breed.
Exercise & Living Conditions
The English Cream Golden Retriever is less boisterous than his American counterpart, but this does not mean he needs any less exercise. Being a traditional working breed, he needs a lot of exercise. Expect to spend at least 1 hour every day vigorously exercising the English Cream, come rain or shine. If you cant do this, expect your English Cream Retriever to take out his energy on your possessions.
In between exercise sessions, he will need a lot of interactive playtime too. The Golden Retriever is the 4th most intelligent dog breed, meaning they need mental stimulation. Be sure to invest in plenty of toys for him to play with. Or design DIY brain games that you can both play, such as find the ball under the cup.
The English Cream Golden Retriever needs to live with an active family who can guarantee him his exercise needs and keep his intelligent mind occupied. Because of this, and the fact that he is a needy dog who craves the company of his humans, he needs a family that can spend most of their time with him.
Apartment living is not going to work for the English Cream. He needs a larger home with access to his own yard that he can roam and chill in til his hearts content. Because he is an outdoorsy dog breed, he will get cabin fever very quickly.
What Does An English Golden Retriever Look Like
As mentioned previously, the different country-specific breed standards have resulted in slightly different appearances between Golden Retrievers, despite all dogs of this breed being descendants of Lord Tweedmouths original pup.
In general, the English or White Golden Retriever has more of a square-type body with a stronger, more robust front end.
When it comes to the face, its ears are set a little lower but the dog should have the puppy-dog-like round dark eyes that are typical of this breed.
White Golden Retrievers can also be slower to mature than their American cousins, only reaching full maturity at about four years of age.
#13: English Cream Golden Retrievers Have Blocky Heads
Yes, most English Creams do have blocky heads.
They also typically have wavy coats, wider muzzles, and stockier bodies.
Other golden retrievers can have these physical characteristics, too, but they may also have slimmer, more athletic bodies, a range of coat lengths and color, and narrow or wide muzzles.
What Are English Golden Retrievers And Should I Get One
Also referred to as English Cream Golden Retrievers, Exquisite Platinum Imported Golden Retrievers, White Golden Retrievers, or Rare White European Retrievers, an English Golden Retriever is simply a Golden Retriever that is English in origin.
These dogs also often have a striking paler coat than your standard Golden Retriever, leading many to think they are a distinct brand new breed but that is not the case.
Is It True That English Golden Retrievers Are Calmer
There are many websites on the internet that claim English Golden Retrievers to be calmer than American or Canadian Retrievers, however, there is no research or study that proves this to be true.
Golden Retrievers are a calm, gentle and loving breed. Saying that one type is calmer than the other is simply a sales gimmick.
When you look at a litter of puppies, not all of the puppies have the same personality or temperament. Some puppies are more hyper while some are calmer.
There are so many factors that can contribute to a dogs temperament other than genetics. For instance, the dogs upbringing, and the dogs environment.
Do English Golden Retrievers Cost More
Golden Retrievers in general are a very expensive breed. It is rare to be able to purchase a Golden Retriever for under $1500 from a reputable breeder.
They can range in price depending on the breeder, their location, and if the dog comes from champion bloodlines. You could pay $1500 to $2500 or even more.
Another determining factor of cost is if the Golden Retriever has papers . Often, home breeders will charge less because their dogs are not registered with their Kennel Club.
Unfortunately, there are some breeders that will charge more for a Golden because of their coat colour. Cream coloured and dark red Golden Retrievers are sometimes priced higher because breeders will advertise them as rare.
Price should not be based on coat colour, if a breeder advertises their puppies as rare, cream coloured, or white, you should see this as a red flag! A reputable breeder will advertise the health and temperament of their puppies, not the colour of their coat!
Adopting a Golden Retriever is a great choice as well. Adoption fees are much less than breeder costs and your Golden will have all of the required veterinary care tests done before bringing him/her home, including vaccinations, microchipping and spay/neuter.
English Cream Golden Retriever Full Grown
The English Cream Golden Retriever is a medium to the large-sized dog when fully grown. A male dog ranges between 22 and 24 in height.
A female ranges between 20 and 22 in height. This breed has a blockier and broader head than the American Golden Retriever.
English Cream Golden Retrievers can weigh between 55 and 75 pounds.
The main defining characteristic of this breed is its light-colored coat. It also has a thick, feathery tail and slightly arched broadhead without prominent occipital or frontal bones.
English Cream Golden Retrievers have a powerful, symmetrical, strong, and balanced build as well as a gentle, soft mouth that can carry eggs and game without damaging the item.
They are also alert and confident. This breed has soft expressions and kind eyes.
American Vs Canadian Vs British Golden Retrievers
There seems to be a lot of misinformation when it comes to American vs. Canadian vs. British goldens.
Remember, according to the Golden Retriever Club of America, and also the Golden Retriever Club of Canada, there is just one breed of golden retriever.
So to say that these are different types of golden retrievers is a little misleading
However, the breed standards are not so standard across the three nations.
|Coat colors||Rich, lustrous golden of various shadesPredominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable||lustrous golden of various shades.||Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.|
Here are some interesting notes from the table above:
- The British standard accepts shorter goldens
- The AKC specifically says extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable.
- The British Kennel Club accepts cream as a color
Although these nations vary in accepted colors and sizes, one thing remains true: golden retrievers are typically sweet, loving family dogs.
So far this list has included different styles or fancy names of the same breed of golden retrievers, but thats about to change
#9: The Akc Does Recognize Cream
The Golden Retriever Breed Standard Illustrated
Many people think that the AKC doesnt recognize English Cream golden retrievers.
English Cream goldens are still golden retrievers, just with a fancy name and typically light coloring.
Here is what the AKC Breed Standard has to say about light golden retrievers: Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable.
Although it is undesirable, golden retrievers are golden retrievers, so if you have an English Cream golden, they can still be registered with the AKC as a golden retriever .
An interesting point here is that even though this light color is undesirable according to American Breed Standards, thats not the case with other countries.
Heres what the UK Breed Standard says about color: Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.
Heres what the Canadian Breed Standard says about color: Lustrous golden of various shades
And heres what the National Golden Retriever Council Australia says about color: Any shade of cream or gold but neither red or mahogany.
So although the American Breed Standard does not like the cream color, other countries are more accepting of it.
There Is No Difference Between English And American Goldens
This is the biggest myth and lie Ive seen spread around by many American golden retriever breeders. Ive even seen one American breeder go to say that English standard goldens that are in America are Europes rejects. That is by far from the truth and in fact many come from champions across Europe. English standards are very different than American ones. I cover their differences on The Breed post on my site. The differences are big enough whereas most English standard goldens can not compete in AKC competitions. Color alone is not the biggest factor in their differences. Length of the loin, eyes, size, shape of the head are just a few to name of differences. Some people prefer one standard over another and differences should be cherished.
Where Does White Come In
It can be challenging to try and visualize the diversity in the Golden Retriever coat color spectrum. So we invite you to visit this fun Golden Retriever picture gallery to see the range of different lovely coat colors that can occur in this popular dog breed for yourself!
Interestingly, according to both the UKs Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club Golden Retriever breed standard, pure white Golden Retrievers are not acceptable in the show ring.
White American Golden Retrievers and White English Golden Retrievers are considered a fault.
But, cream colored and darker Golden Retriever coat colors are acceptable.
The reasons for this distinction are not detailed in the breed standards. But it is important to be aware of this color restriction if you plan to show your Golden Retriever in the future!
#23: Good Breeders Value Health & Temperament Over Color
The most important thing for any breeder is not looks or coat color.
It will be trying to improve the breed and produce healthy puppies for a purpose.
For most golden retriever breeders, that purpose is to produce puppies with a good temperament that make good family pets.
Yes, some may prefer one color or look over another, but that will not be their main focus.
Read this article about how to find a reputable breeder.
