They Were Bred For Different Jobs

8 Weeks Old Chocolate Brown Labrador Retriever Puppy First Day At Home

The differences between the purpose of the Golden Retriever vs Labrador are subtle now because they both have similar jobs, however, historically they had very different jobs!

Golden Retrievers were actually a gentlemans dog, bred to retrieve waterfowl. Labradors were a fishermans dog, bred to retrieve fish nets and fish.

Both breeds were bred for their loyalty, intelligence, swimming abilities, and soft-mouths:

  • Their loyalty makes them excellent companions.
  • Their intelligence makes them easy-to-train.
  • Their swimming ability helps them excel in their jobs.
  • Their soft-mouths helping them fetch water-fowl without harm.

Golden Retrievers were originally bred to retrieve shot waterfowl during a gentlemans hunt. They were the perfect sporting companion for wealthy owners who enjoyed game hunting.

Unlike the Golden, the Labrador Retrievers first job was to retrieve nets, ropes and fish for fishermen.

It wasnt until after the St. Johns Water Dog was imported to England that aristocrats admired their loyalty, work ethic and love of water. After they arrived in England, Labradors were then bred to be sporting companions whose duty was to retrieve shot waterfowl .

At this point, both breeds became popular companions for shooting sports.

Activity Levels And Energy

From what we know about the histories of Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, theyve been bred to be sporting dogs. They love being active running, retrieving things, and swimming.

Golden Retrievers need at least an hour of exercise each day. Labradors are similar, in terms of their need for play, but like a more tranquil environment. All this means is that Golden Retrievers are best suited to an active lifestyle, so if youre also an active person, theyre the perfect dogs for you.

You can take both Labrador Retrievers and a Golden on regular walks, play retrieving games with them, and jog with them. Both these dogs love being with their families and spending time with the people they love the most.

Mental exercise, also known as enrichment, is just as important as physical activity. Enrichment lets your dog use its natural abilities such as smelling, hearing, and sight. A physically exercised dog needs rest, and a mentally exercised dog needs sleep. 10 minutes of mental activity can be as tiring as an hour of physical play. Enrichment is great on rainy/cold/hot days when physical activity is not the best option.

How Long Do Labrador Retrievers Live Are They A Healthy Breed

Goldador Dog Breed: The Golden Retriever and Labrador Mix

Labrador Retrievers typically live 10-12 years. Many Labs do live to 12 or 13, but usually with chronic health issues such as arthritis.

Unfortunately, an increasing number of beloved Labs are lost in middle age to inherited forms of cancer or heart disease.

Common orthopedic diseases in Labradors include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and luxating patella , each of which causes chronic pain and lameness and can require expensive surgery.

Labs are very prone to rupturing the ligaments in their hind legs expensive surgery again. And if one hind leg ruptures, the other is likely to follow at a later time. Another surgery.

It’s a good idea to have pet insurance when you own a Lab.

A number of eye diseases cause blindness in Labrador Retrievers.

The breed is at higher-than-average risk for an emergency gastrointestinal syndrome called bloat, which can kill a healthy dog within hours.

A number of neurological/neuromuscular diseases, some of them deadly, affect Labrador Retrievers.

One example of an odd neuromuscular disease is called exercise-induced collapse. As the name suggests, affected Labradors who have been vigorously exercising suddenly begin swaying, collapse, and require a rest before they can move again.

Grooming: Do Labrador Retrievers Shed A Lot Are They Easy To Groom

For such a shorthaired dog, Labrador Retrievers shed more than you might think on the high side of average .

The bulk of their shedding occurs twice a year, for three weeks in the spring as their thicker winter coat switches to a cooler summer coat, and three weeks in the fall as their summer coat switches over to a winter coat. But they also shed some all through the year.

Labs need more brushing than some other shorthaired breeds because of the high shedding. If you don’t diligently pull out the dead undercoat during regular grooming sessions, it will all fall out on your floors and furniture.

On the plus side, obviously Labs need no trimming!

How Long Do Golden Retrievers Live

With Golden Retrievers there seems to be a division with some dying far too young from cancer, and those escaping the cancer gene surviving much longer. So it really is worth looking carefully at the ancestors of your puppy with regard to longevity. You wont be able to tell much from the mother as she will still be a young dog. But having long-lived grandparents and an older father might give your puppy a better chance of a long life.

How Sociable Are Labrador Retrievers

Are they friendly with strangers?

Yes, most Labs are happy to see everyone. They’ll bark when someone comes to the door, but they’re not protective. This is a friendly, trusting breed.

Are Labrador Retrievers good with children?

Most Labs are among the best possible dogs for children.

However, remember my cautions about exuberance and jumping. Young Labs romp and jump with vigor. That means things can go flying including people.

If your Lab has been allowed to jump on people, you should stop this behavior immediately. Jumping can injure people, and even when it doesn’t, it puts a dog in a heightened state of arousal that isn’t good for him.

If you don’t yet have your dog and your home includes toddlers or infirm adults, you might consider skipping the challenging puppy and adolescent stages. Look into adopting an adult Labrador Retriever from a rescue group. Adults have a more settled temperament and you can specifically look for a calm one.

Are Labrador Retrievers good with other pets?

Most Labs are fine with other dogs and cats, fine with livestock, and even fine with very small pets such as rabbits and ferrets.

Of course introductions should be made properly. Don’t just plunk a baby bunny onto the floor and let your full-grown Lab loose in the room. Even a friendly dog can make mincemeat of a small fragile creature simply by jumping on it.

The Golden Retrievers official breed name pretty much speaks for itself. But coloration at maturity can range from almost white to a rich dark golden red shade. Preference for color tends to lean towards one end of the color spectrum for a while, then swing back the other way.

Labradors Retrievers are excellent with families and children, and thats why theyre such a favorite breed. The sweet and peaceful nature fits well if your kids are young.

Golden Retrievers are similar, but their high energy levels means they can sometimes become overly excited. If you have extremely young children, wearing out their energy through exercise and training them to respond well to your directions will be the key to helping them adapt to your home.

Yes, training most Labrador Retrievers is easy. They housebreak quickly and are usually willing to please.

    Golden Retriever Vs Lab Size

It wont take you long to notice that both breeds are quite similar in this respect! However, there is one important caveat to make here: there are actually two different types of Labrador Retriever: the American and the English.

While both are medium to large breed dogs, their builds can differ more than a little.

    Shedding In Different Colors

golden retriever chocolate lab mix â Pets

There are physical differences between the breeds. Some are obvious while others take a more discerning eye. First, Labradors tend to be heavier in appearance due to denser bone, a deeper chest, and a rounder ribcage. Second, there are subtle distinctions in the shape of the head, although both are designed for carrying game birds. And finally, the coats vary as they serve different purposes. Talbott explains, Goldens were developed as primarily upland game dogs, so they require a firm jacket and moderate feathering over a dense undercoat that protects the body from brambles and other hazards, as well as harsh weather. Labradors were developed as primarily water dogs, and their coats insulate them against cold and icy water with dense undercoats and a slightly oily, short outer coat.

Smith points out there are differences in the coat color as well. Labradors can shed hair in three colors yellow , black, and chocolate. The Golden coat varies from very pale cream to nearly fox red. So, an owner can match the shedding to their decorating and wardrobe preferences.
