JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A local woman is warning folks on the First Coast to be wary of online posts regarding puppies for sale.
The woman, who wanted to be identified as Catherine, said someone took advantage of her desire to own a Golden Retriever puppy and stole her money.
On March 13, she searched the internet and found the puppy she longed for.
“I had been looking for a Golden Retriever for a long time,” she said. “This was it.”
Catherine reached out and began what she thought was the process to adopt the pup.
The seller sent her a video of the dog named Maya. She said it pulled at her heartstrings, and eventually her wallet.
“I just wanted a companion,” she said. “A family dog.”
What happened next would leave her angry and embarrassed. She wired $700 to Richmond, Virginia, not to Dallas, Texas where the sales person said Sunbeam Golden Retrievers was based.
“I did not see anything suspicious about the process,” she said.
The shipping was suppose to be free, but it wasn’t. She learned that immediately after she had wired the $700 from a Walmart location.
“They wanted to charge anywhere from $1,100 to $2,500 for a crate to ship the puppy,” she said.
Her daughter, Jesse, is upset and said it was a ruse from the beginning.
“To me, it was some kind of scam made clear after this crate issue came up,’ Jesse said.
The website PetScams.com investigates online pet sales and issued a scam alert for the site Sunbeam Golden Retrievers.
