How Much Do Cream Golden Retrievers Cost

English Cream Golden Retrievers – 5 weeks old and full of life!

Golden retrieversno matter their colorcost anywhere between $500 to $2,500, depending on the location, the reputation of the breeder, and whether the puppy descends from champion lines.

Adoption

If you adopt a golden retriever puppy with no health clearances or lineage documents, expect to pay around $500 or less. Anything above this range is a rip-off.

Pet Store

Depending on how reputable the pet store is and how well the puppy has been bred, the price can range anywhere from $500 to $1000.

Breeder

The cost of a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder will set you back $1,500 to $2,500. Dogs descending from champion blood lines will be on the higher end of this price spectrum.

Warning

It is a huge red flag when a breeder tries to advertise their golden retriever puppies as “white,””cream,” or “rare.” A reputable breeder will not advertise color, but rather health and bloodline.

Should You Get A White Golden Retriever

If you are interested in a new companion, a white golden retriever dog is a great choice. These dogs are fun-loving, patient, and extremely loyal to their humans.

In particular, we highly recommend goldens for families. These dogs love lots of attention and enjoy groups of people. They are also easy to train and are perfect for young children.

On top of that, English cream golden retrievers adjust to any type of home, and they especially like being involved in all family activities. As long as they get enough exercise, your white golden will happily curl up on the couch next to you at the end of the day.

An English cream golden retriever will also be a great companion for family movie nights, only asking for belly rubs from time to time during the film. This is in stark contrast to Labradors and some other types of retriever dogs that get bored easily and need a lot of mental stimulation.

All types of retrievers, including English cream golden retrievers, are highly intelligent and easy to train. Known for their eager-to-please and obedient natures, goldens make great pets even for newbie dog parents who have no prior experience training a dog.

On the other hand, a golden retriever might not be the best choice for you if you live alone or dont exercise often. They also are not the best guard dogs. Though goldens are loyal to their owners, they quickly befriend strangers and are more likely to greet an intruder with a wagging tail than a threatening bark!

Exercise & Living Conditions

The English Cream Golden Retriever is less boisterous than his American counterpart, but this does not mean he needs any less exercise. Being a traditional working breed, he needs a lot of exercise. Expect to spend at least 1 hour every day vigorously exercising the English Cream, come rain or shine. If you cant do this, expect your English Cream Retriever to take out his energy on your possessions.

In between exercise sessions, he will need a lot of interactive playtime too. The Golden Retriever is the 4th most intelligent dog breed, meaning they need mental stimulation. Be sure to invest in plenty of toys for him to play with. Or design DIY brain games that you can both play, such as find the ball under the cup.

The English Cream Golden Retriever needs to live with an active family who can guarantee him his exercise needs and keep his intelligent mind occupied. Because of this, and the fact that he is a needy dog who craves the company of his humans, he needs a family that can spend most of their time with him.

Apartment living is not going to work for the English Cream. He needs a larger home with access to his own yard that he can roam and chill in til his hearts content. Because he is an outdoorsy dog breed, he will get cabin fever very quickly.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Easy To Train

Pin on Goldens

Because theyre so smart and love pleasing people, golden retrievers are easy to train.

Theyre sensitive and loving, so the best way to train them is through positive reinforcement, like rewarding them with a treat, toy, play or praise when they do something good.

And not only are they easy to train, but they love it.

My dog, Oliver, loves when I bust out the treat bag.

He knows hes going to be working with me, be challenged, and be rewarded with lots of treats and praise.

What Goes Into Naming Your Puppy

As youre trying to figure out what to name your new puppy, here are some tips:

1. Golden retrievers are sweet-tempered

Golden retrievers having loving, loyal personalities, so names like Diablo, Killer, or Medusa usually dont fit goldens.

And although your puppy will bite a lot, Jaws probably wont be a great name long-term.

2. Youll be saying their name a lot

You probably dont want to give them a really long name because youll be saying it so often.

Also, if theyre doing something you dont want them to be doing, youll probably want to be able to say it quickly!

3. Everyone will know your puppys name

Although inside jokes can be cute or funny, you dont want to give your puppy an embarrassing name.

You probably dont want to be at the dog park yelling out, Cuddley Wuddley! Come here!

4. Your puppy will have that name forever

You dont want to choose trendy names for your pup that will be lame or weird in a few years.

For example, you probably wouldnt want to name your puppy, Joe Exotic.

5. Dont put too much pressure on yourself

No matter what you choose, it will definitely grow on you as you associate it with your cute puppy.

The Akc Does Recognize Cream

The Golden Retriever Breed Standard Illustrated

Many people think that the AKC doesnt recognize English Cream golden retrievers.

English Cream goldens are still golden retrievers, just with a fancy name and typically light coloring.

Here is what the AKC Breed Standard has to say about light golden retrievers: Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable.

Although it is undesirable, golden retrievers are golden retrievers, so if you have an English Cream golden, they can still be registered with the AKC as a golden retriever .

An interesting point here is that even though this light color is undesirable according to American Breed Standards, thats not the case with other countries.

Heres what the UK Breed Standard says about color: Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.

Heres what the Canadian Breed Standard says about color: Lustrous golden of various shades

And heres what the National Golden Retriever Council Australia says about color: Any shade of cream or gold but neither red or mahogany.

So although the American Breed Standard does not like the cream color, other countries are more accepting of it.

Can Golden Retrievers Be Different Colors

Goldens tend to be one solid color, with lighter bellies, legs, and tails. The AKC only recognizes dark golden, golden, and light golden in this canines breed standard.

Its no surprise, then, that most Goldens will fall within this range.

It may sound like the Golden Retriever color spectrum is rather limited, but that couldnt be further from the truth. There are an infinite number of golden tones and hues, and your pooch could be any one of them!`

As a matter of fact, some Goldens are so richly pigmented that their coats appear amber- or ginger-colored. Others have so little pigment, they look like four-legged, furry snowballs.

Brief History Of American Golden Retrievers

All golden retrievers, whether they are American, Canadian, or English, originated in Scotland in 1868 where they were used as superior hunting dogs by sportsmen. The first goldens were registered with the British Kennel Club in 1903. Back then, they were listed as flat-coat goldens. The breed didn’t become popular in the U.S. until the 1920s when anything British was cherished, including dog breeds. In 1932, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed.

What Different Countries’ Kennel Clubs Say About Cream

Both Canada and the U.K. accept a broader range of coat colors within the golden retriever standard than the American Kennel Club does.

    U.S.

According to the American Kennel Club website, the standard coat color of the golden retriever is a “rich, lustrous golden of various shades.” The club further adds that the “predominant body color, which is either extremely pale or extremely dark, is undesirable. Some latitude should be given to the light puppy whose coloring shows promise of deepening with maturity.”

    Canada

On the other hand, the Golden Retriever Club of Canada seems more inclusive of pale dogs. They state that “the acceptable range of colour in the golden retriever is broad. While a medium gold is always correct, coat colour can range from cream to a darker coppery gold.” The Club adds that as long as specimens are within this color range, they should be judged equally.

    U.K.

The Kennel Club of the United Kingdom seems to agree with the Canadian club’s standard when it comes to cream coats. It accepts a golden retriever that is “any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.”

Can A Golden Retriever Be White

There is no such thing as a purely white golden retriever. While English cream golden retrievers are often referred to as white, they are merely a lighter-colored variety of traditional golden retrievers. A purebred golden retriever can never be white like a Samoyed, for example, or any other dog breed that actually carries the genes for a pure white coat.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Need Lots Of Exercise

Golden retrievers were bred to hunt all day, so they naturally have tons of energy.

Theyre also very smart dogs, so they need to be stimulated both physically and mentally.

Here are some ways to do that:

    • Play fetch or tug
    • Train them
    • Feed them through puzzle toys or frozen kongs
    • Take them on long walks and let them sniff around

Keeping Your English Cream Golden Retrievers Coat Shiny

If youve been fortunate enough to find companionship with a particularly white-coated Golden Retriever, you know already how joyful it is to see that beautiful coat flouncing as he runs. Strong, healthy fur is an earmark of well-bred Goldens when maintained correctly, your pups fur will stay shiny and protective of his skin long into old age.

Unfortunately, many Golden owners struggle with proper coat maintenance after adoption. Golden Retrievers have several unique coat features that require a special approach to both bathing and brushing, and if the wrong method is used, it can hinder the fur, keeping your dog from looking his best. This is particularly true for white-coated Goldens. Their fur is so light that it not only shows debris like mud and grass stains easily but can pick up dyes from shampoos and coat conditioners, too.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not From England

No, most English Cream goldens youll find in America are not from England.

Just like French fries are not from France.

All golden retrievers originated from Scotland in the mid-1800s when Lord Tweedmouth bred a Tweed water spaniel and a yellow wavy-coated retriever.

Most American breeders of these goldens either breed dogs from here in the States or import their dogs from all over the world, including:

    • Denmark
    • The Netherlands

So how did English Cream goldens get their misleading name?

According to Bev Brown, the Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club, were the first ones to write up the breed standard.

And in the early 1900s, all dog shows in Britain were held in England.

So in America, we called the champions of those dog shows, English Champions.

The English seems to have stuck with goldens that look like the English champions in those days, so 100 years later were calling them English Cream Golden Retrievers.
