Special to the Record-Eagle/Jeff RabidouxGolden retrievers of the Northwest Michigan Golden Retriever Club play during a summer party to celebrate the birthday of 6-year-old golden, Fisher. His owner, Jeff Rabidoux, organized the club about a year ago.

TRAVERSE CITY The scores of fluffy, golden-hued dogs are almost as delighted as their owners when the monthly walk or romp kicks off.

The Northwest Michigan Golden Retriever Club, formed about a year ago by Glen Arbor resident Jeff Rabidoux, brings pups and owners together for walks, playdates and dog-focused conversation.

The main thing is to get the dogs some exercise well go to dog-friendly parks and do some hiking, lakeside-type things so the dogs can swim, Rabidoux said. We focus on the dogs and the people its a social thing.

The once-a-month-or-so outings draw anywhere from 10 to several dozen dogs, depending on timing and location. The club mainly sticks to spots in Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. Wintertime tends to bring more events owners like Betsy Van Westen welcome some motivation to get out in the cold.

The clubs 150-some members vary in participation and come from across the state.

Rabidoux is just as happy to bring Fisher around other dogs. The 6-year-old pup is his second golden retriever.
