Retrievers On The Case: Tracking Lost Dogs In The Twin Cities

When Rocky disappeared, Dan Conybeare connected with The Retrievers, a team of dog detectives whove been organizing searches throughout the state for over a year.

I still remember the sickening feeling in my stomach when I realized my cat had escaped. I was hosting the family tabby for a few days when a roommate left the door ajar. The next morning, the cat was gone and I felt horrible.

My sister and I spent three days looking for Ed. We made posters and put them up all along St. Pauls North End streets, knocking on doors and meeting neighbors. But after three long December nights, Ed remained lost.

How Rocky got away

Dan Conybeare knows how it feels when an animal slips out of your hands. He was just getting to know Rocky when the black and white rescue rat terrier escaped onto the streets of St. Paul. Dan had only had the little dog for a few hours, but hes spent most of his free time over the last two weeks trying to get Rocky back into safe hands.

I dont know, Conybeare told me when I asked him if hed ever get Rocky back. I try not to really think about that too much anymore. I was feeling so desperate early on. I accepted that we my never find him and may never know. But Im hopeful. Saturday we had our first really solid sighting in five days, and had another potential sighting today.

That was Tuesday. This week, the hunt for Rocky continues.

Our puppies are free from any health issues, and are true to the Golden Retriever temperament. We have been very selective in our breeding program. Our greatest aim, as a breeder of Golden Retrievers, is to ensure that we are producing healthy, sound dogs, as described by the American Kennel Club. We strive for excellent health and temperament. Our goal is to produce dogs that will excel in any activity you choose to pursue, whether it is conformation, agility, obedience, hunting, or as a cherished family companion. All of our puppies are AKC registered and sold with limited registration .

No one can guarantee you will never have health issues, but an ethical breeder will have proof that they are trying to eradicate the most prevalent ones. We have researched our lines very carefully for longevity and especially cancer risk. Just because two dogs are AKC registered, does not mean they should be bred. Please do your homework on the breed, first and foremost.

Why Is Health Testing Important

Unfortunately, not every breeder tests their dogs according to the Golden Retriever Club of America standards. At minimum, a golden retriever should be tested for Hips, Elbows, Eyes and Heart. It is equally as responsible, in our mind, to also test for additional genetic components, such as Hereditary blindness, skin conditions, etc. At Sleepy Morning Goldens, we know that it is our duty, not only as a responsible breeder, but to take the necessary steps to better the breed. If you purchase a puppy from a breeder that does not test all these categories, it could could end up costing you thousands of dollars, not including an unsurmountable amount of heart ache for family and pain for your dog.

The cost of surgery to fix Hip Dysplasia is around $4,500, and the cost of a total hip replacement can be upwards of $14,000. It is a red flag if a breeder were to say that some of their dogs were tested, and some that were not “because their parents passed,” or “we have never had a problem.” It is very likely that they failed the test, but are just not telling you, or the failed exam was not submitted to OFA for reporting, because they are heavily invested in the dog. Some may not even test for certain categories, as they fear they may not pass.

Described As A Dogs Overall Outlook On Life

The dogs drives, thresholds, traits, and instincts can give us insight into their temperament. The ideal dog will have an even temperament and will not become overly emotional when exposed to day-to-day stimuli, including sights, sounds and activities.

We begin making notes of each puppy from the time they are born to get an early indication of their individual traits, which can provide clues to subsequent development. Starting at six weeks of age, we start performing some tests to determine if they possess the traits and natural tendencies to be placed in an assistance dog program. These evaluations are complemented with temperament testing.

Like any test, a puppy temperament test cannot be absolutely comprehensive, but it can assess particular qualities, skills or characteristics at that point in time. Environment plays a significant role, and temperament can be affected by the environment the puppy goes to. We work closely with our clients to determine the traits necessary for their future role, so we can be clear in what we are testing for.

A Process In Which A Puppy Develops Relationships And Communication Skills With Other People Animals And Its Environment

There is an important developmental stage that occurs in all dogs which is called the critical socialization period. Puppies need exposure to all kinds of people, animals, places, sounds, sights, and surfaces during their first weeks and months of life .

This socialization often helps prevent inappropriate responses, such as fear, over-reactivity, shyness, or aggressive behaviors when they become adults. Exposing a puppy to new experiences, in a controlled environment, will help ensure a calm, confident and psychologically healthy adult dog. The more a puppy is exposed to, the more they learn! Socialization begins with our development program, but it is a lifelong process that needs to be continued when the puppy goes to its new home. Our goal is to maximize the potential of each puppy by stimulating it’s learning ability, environment, curiosity, and natural instincts. These experiences will provide long-term effects benefiting the puppy’s future.

There are clear reasons why the Golden Retriever has soared toward the top in popularity for family and service dogs. The Golden Retriever, which comes in three types, are known for their soft golden or cream color coats, as their name implies. While these coats arent hypoallergenic and shed just a little bit, they are soft, cuddly, and make a Golden Retriever what it is. Their coats can be kept long and flowing, which may require a bit more maintenance and grooming. They can be clipped short for grooming whichs easier to manage.

The size of the Golden Retriever is also a great feature. They are considered to be medium to large-sized dogs. Female Golden Retrievers grow to be about 55-70 pounds and reach a height of about 20-22 inches. Male Golden Retrievers grow to be a little bigger, with a weight range between 65-75 pounds and a size ranging from 22-24 inches when measured at the shoulders.
