How Fast Do They Run
If you were worried about these loyal pups being unable to keep up with your pace, think again. You would actually have a much harder time keeping up with a sprinting retriever than youd think.
Believe it or not, a typical Golden Retriever could give Usain Bolt a run for his money. Most would never guess it, but the top speed of a Golden Retriever is approximately 35 miles per hour!
Purpose Of The Breeding Background
One of the most significant factors in this discussion is the breeding history of both Labradors and Golden Retrievers.
Both breeds have been bred to be working dogs. It is not uncommon for one of these retrievers to spend hours out in the field, putting on mile after mile, searching for birds.
With this ultimate purpose in mind, breeders have sought for endurance as a specific trait. Dogs that lacked the trait were not bred and those that excelled in long-distance days were bred more frequently.
This breeding has created a dog perfected fitted for running.
The Verdict: Normal Growth Is Not The Same For Each Pup
Every Golden is different and will grow at their own rate. The key is to ensure they arent growing too quickly or too slowly steady growth is ideal.
Aside from other factors we mentioned, a nutritious diet and an active lifestyle will help keep your Golden healthy and happy.
Remember, their final size will vary from one another, depending on variation and pedigree.

Understand The Breeds Need For Exercise
Golden retrievers are built for activity as they are muscular with a large body that can handle the stress of longer runs. While not as sleek and fast as a greyhound, golden retrievers still make excellent running dogs.
Ideally, a healthy, adult golden retriever will need to be exercised twice a day, for an hour in total. The exact amount of exercise will depend on the dog, so you will want to work with your vet to develop a healthy routine.
You should also buy a running leash for your golden retriever as well as reflective clothing and a vest. This helps you run comfortably while keeping your dog visible to motorists.
Can Golden Retrievers Go On Long Runs
Simply put, yes, golden retrievers can go on long runs. In fact, since goldens were originally bred and used as working dogs, they are naturally excellent long-distance runners. Besides being a great form of exercise, taking your dog on longer runs can also be a great way to bond with your pup and spend some extra time together.

How Much Grooming Does A Golden Retriever Need
All that beautiful golden fur on a Golden Retriever does come with a high price. Expect to have extensive grooming hours invested in your pet if you add a Golden Retriever to the family. This dog requires regular brushing and bathing to keep the coat clear, shiny, and mat-free. The Golden Retriever is also a profuse shedder, with more fur coming out with seasonal changes. If you like to have a spotless and fur-free house, this is not the dog for you.
The Golden Retriever also enjoys all outdoor play, running into deep brush, and swimming. This behavior can make the fur mat and become dirty faster than usual. If you have a very adventurous and athletic dog, expect to wash and groom your dog more often to keep the dogs fur clean and tangle-free. Swimming in salt and fresh water can bring in dirt and mud, which must be removed to keep the coat healthy.;
Signs Your Puppy Is Getting Too Much Exercise
Exercise keeps joints limber, promotes good range of motion, maintains muscle mass, and can help prevent injury. But too much of it can actually cause injury.
Thats why it is important to make sure you are giving your puppy the proper amount of exercise and not over-exercising them.
Watch out for signs of over-exercise like sore muscles, behavioral changes, and joint injury.

Exercise For Your Puppy
In addition to giving your puppy short, daily walks, here are some other options of exercise that your pup will enjoy.
Swimming is a great exercise for all dogs as it helps strengthen and tone muscles. Its a low impact exercise that doesnt put strain on joints.
Get your puppy familiar with water first after they are 3 months old. Let them wade into the water in a small pond, or a dog paddling pool. But its not safe to let them loose into deep water.
Golden Retrievers are meant for retrieving, so a good game of fetch will come naturally to them. Just make sure to watch for any signs of tiring.
Dog toys that move
There is a wide variety of interactive toys for puppies that are highly stimulating and can help with exercise.
Play with other dogs
Having your puppy be around other dogs is a good way to give them an exercise buddy while they work on important social skills.

Ive Never Seen A Dog Eat Faster Than This Golden Retriever Aptly Named After A Food
A Golden Retriever puppy named Mango is giving every competitive eater ever a run for their money, as he eats faster than seems humanly possible. In a video posted to Instagram by his owner, Mango can be seen sitting and waiting patiently for his dinner that is, until he sees his food bowl and loses his sh*t. His mouth literally starts quivering before the bowl is put down in front of him for him to devour, and I mean, I definitely relate to that level of food excitement.
âThis is called my âmouthy mouth,â reads the videoâs caption on Mangoâs shared Instagram account with his Golden Retriever older brother, Charlie. âMuch like my mom around queso & margaritas, I cannot control myself around food. I get so excited that my mouth quivers. Please give me all the food.â

When Can I Run With My Golden Retriever
This question can relate both to the dogs age and the time of year.
In terms of age, some people will give different answers.
The absolute earliest you can start running with your dog is 6 months, any earlier and their joints might not develop properly.
However, I would consider myself overly cautious, and I wouldnt take my dog running with me before the age of 18 months.
This is only so their joints are more developed and theres much less chance of them being injured by running long distance.
This isnt to say they shouldnt get any exercise before this age.
On the contrary, exercise them as much as you want, especially while theyre a puppy, but dont do anything more strenuous than a normal doggy walk.
This will have the benefit of keep them nice and fit, and giving them general preparation for longer distance running in the future.
Do Golden Retrievers Make Good Running Partners
Some kinds of dogs are better runners than others. Some breeds like to run and are good running partners, while some arent really built for running and should be treated to walks instead of jogging sessions.
Hunting dogs are generally good runners because theyre bred to hunt or retrieve caught prey. Speed is essential when hunting. Its vital to be faster than the prey and to recover a downed specimen quickly. Since golden retrievers historically are primarily hunting dogs, theyre quite good runners, and they have an absolute joy for running!
So, if you like running and do it regularly, a golden retriever is a great pick. Goldens love to run and they should run regularly as part of their daily exercise, since its good for their overall health and physique. Its better for hunting dogs, even if theyre kept as household pets, to be in good shape, and more so for golden retrievers, who need constant exercise.

Golden Retrievers Look After Cats
Youve probably seen plenty of movies where cats and dogs and all kinds of other animals are peacefully coexisting in one home. But while this certainly happens in real life, not all breeds of dog take to it easily.
Goldens, on the other hand, are well known for their love for practically anyone, including cats. Put a Golden and a cat in the same home, and the Golden will likely want to become fast friends. Though plenty of breeds can be friendly with cats, Goldens take to it much quicker than most.
Notes About The Weather
Weather can have a huge impact on how you should plan out runs. Here are some quick tips to help you out:
- Keep things moderate. Extreme cold temperatures and high heat are not appropriate for long, strenuous trails.
- Clothe your dog on very cold days. Golden Retrievers might be hardy, but they will still start to shiver and shake on freezing days.
- Raincoats are a thing for a reason. Raincoats can prevent your dog from smelling terrible, but they also can trap heat. Make sure that the raincoat wont become too warm for your pup!
- Use common sense. If a storm is outside, your dog should stay inside.

Golden Retriever Health Issues
Goldens Retrievers are unfortunately at risk of developing several major diseases. This doesnt necessarily mean they acquire these diseases, but knowing their predispositions can help you be better prepared. These are some of the most common disorders affecting this breed.
Cancer : Based on the 1998 GRCA National Health Survey, the lifetime risk of hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma are one in five and one in eight, respectively, says Labadie. Hemangiosarcoma is a very deadly cancer that affects many breeds, but seems to be especially common in Goldens.;
For more information about cancer and other illnesses in Goldens, follow The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study , an initiative that follows over 3,000 Golden Retrievers throughout their lifetime.
Heart Disease: Golden Retrievers are at risk for genetic heart conditions such as subaortic stenosisfibrous tissue below the aorta that causes the blockage of blood flow through the heart; and dilated cardiomyopathy, which interferes with the hearts ability to pump normally. Theyre also predisposed to pericardial effusion, says Romine, which is bleeding around the heart, either as its own disease or secondary to hemangiosarcoma in the region.;
Joint Issues: Dysplasia of the hip and elbow is common in large breeds, like Golden Retrievers. These tend to be more congenital so it is important that the parents are screened for these diseases prior to being bred, says Barnes.
They Are Awesome Swimmers
Although most popular breeds of dogs may have this exception, Golden Retrievers do love the comfort of humans while having a good swim with them.
The Golden Retriever has a natural affinity towards the water and has a strong body for swimming. Even their coat is built for water.
The dual-layer coat acts like a broad undercoat that helps to keep out the chilling temperature if they somehow hit the cold water during the winter months.
Their long outer coat repels water, and as such it doesnt get absorbed in the skin. Hence, a drying shake-off from your pet will fling water everywhere. Keep plenty of towels in close vicinity at all times.
