How Much Water Should Golden Retrievers Drink

3 GOLDEN RETRIEVER PUPPY DOGS FEEDING ROUTINE!

Golden Retrievers should drink up to one ounce of water every day for each pound that they weigh. However, there are many other variables to consider, such as age, activity level, diet , temperature and humidity, medication, pregnancy, nursing, etc.

Make sure your dogs water bowl remains full and that the water is changed every few hours. Dog water fountains, such as the PetSafe Drinkwell from Amazon, are one of my favorites. I love this one because it is perfect for Retrievers, has a two-tiered design, and even includes carbon filters to keep the water free from odors and bad tastes.

Giving ice cubes, adding water to dry food, or making fun playtimes with a hose in warm weather are some other ways to keep your Golden Retriever hydrated.

Know How To Tell If A Golden Retriever Is At A Healthy Size

The greatest lesson we can teach you is to learn what a healthy SIZE looks and feels like for your Golden Retriever. Notice that I dont say Weight.Weight is deceiving. It can change. As a puppy grows it changes all the time. You must be able to feel a dogs side;to determine if your dog is at a healthy size or not. You have to look THROUGH their coat and feel the actual fat that they have. Your dog could look great to you, but after further investigation could be too thin or too fat.

Heres the key.Feel the skin located on the rib cage/side of your Golden Retriever. How thick is that skin/fat? Your goal is for that skin to be as thick as a sweater. If it feels like a t-shirt then your Golden Retriever is too skinny. If it feels like 2 sweaters then your Golden Retriever is too fat. You may say, But my Golden Retriever only weighs 67 lbs! The actual weight means littlehow fat is your Golden Retriever? You do not want your Golden overweight because, as mentioned before, it leads to many problems like dysplasia, heart issues and even cancer. It also voids our warranty if a Golden Retriever is found to be overweight.

Review the picture to the right. Most people would say the Golden in the top photo is too skinny, but the truth is that the top Golden Retriever is at a healthy weight.

Golden Retriever & Raw Diet: Most Popular Methods

BARF

As we said above, BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food. There are two types of BARF feeders, those that add plant matter into the mix and those that stand firmly against such practice.

Generally, the BARF diet consists of 70% meat, 10% plant matter, 10% bone, 5% liver, and 5% other organs. Feeders that dont add in plant matter, replace this portion with meat. This ratio differs from owner to owner, and you should also experiment with ratios and different fruits until you find the best combination for your Golden Retriever.

Ketogenic

Keto diet is more of a short term diet that can help dogs with cancer, autoimmune disease, joint problems, and other chronic health issues. This is very low in carbohydrates and very high in fat diet. The Keto diet consists of 70% fat, 10% bone, 10% meat, and 10% organs. The fat that can be used: raw goat milk, fatty cuts of meat, butter, duck fat, skin, cream, egg yolks.

As we said, the keto diet is not a long-term diet since the lower amount of meat in the diet means that your dog wont get all the amino acids his body needs. The Keto diet is a therapeutic diet best suited to fight off cancer.

Organ Meat

Feeding your Golden Retriever with organ meat is very important as organs contain essential vitamins and minerals. Most raw food diets have a ratio of 5% liver and 5% other organs.

Dog Feeding Guidelines About Changing Dog Foods

How Much To Feed A Golden Retriever Puppy?

Dog feeding guidelines discourage owners from joining the Flavor of the Month Club. Most dogs are happy to stick with one;brand of dog food. They’ve never been told, “variety is the spice of life.”

But if you want to try a different kind of dog food, make the change carefully and slowly. Changing foods suddenly can upset your pooch’s stomach and cause diarrhea.

The best way to make this gradual change is to mix one-fourth new food with three-fourths old food for two days, then half and half for the next two days, then three-fourths new and one-fourth old for two days.

On the seventh day you’re ready to feed him only the new food. You’re all switched over now, and your Golden will be fine.

Dogs have sensitive stomachs and if you just suddenly switch the brand of food, theyll likely have diarrhea felt terrible).

So how do you switch food?

Slowly.

You want to take about a week to switch from the old brand to the new brand.

For example, on day one, 90% of your goldens meal might be the old food, and 10% would be the new food.

Day two: 75% of their meal would be the old food, and 25% would be the new food.

You would slowly increase the amount of new food youre giving them and decrease the amount of old food until theyre fully transitioned.

This will decrease the chances of them having stomach issues.

Your Golden Retriever puppy will have a built-in timer which prompts him for eating on time. You should give him three meals per week for the first three weeks, and then you should feed him twice every day for the rest.

Professional trainers, breeders and professionals prefer to feed their dogs twice daily. Many dogs only eat once a week, but smaller meals provide more satisfaction, better weight control and can prevent bloating. Your dog will also think its big deal that you give him the same food twice a day.

Feed your puppy from 6 to 7 a.m. until noon. Then, feed him again between noon and 5 or 6. For easier house training, do not feed him after 6: p.m.

How Much To Feed A Senior Golden Retriever

Tips and Recommendations for How to Feed Your Golden ...

A golden retriever will be considered a senior dog when he is about 7.5 to 10 years old, with the average lifespan being 10 to 12 years.

A senior golden retriever will need fewer calories than a younger adult, as he is generally going to be less active than he was in his younger years. Typically, hes going to need approximately 900 calories per day. If hes overweight, youll need to feed him less.

In some cases, youll want to start feeding your senior dog a specialty senior dog food , rather than a typical adult formula. Food made specifically for older dogs is often lower in calories, and it can contain nutrition that is good for older dogs, such as glucosamine and vitamins.

Many senior dogs continue to eat regular adult dog food, but it would be a good idea to consult with your vet and see if a diet change would be a good idea.

In most cases, you should still be giving him two meals per day, equally spaced and at consistent times.
