Are Golden Retrievers protective? Well, many of their behaviors show they are.
For one, they are loyal, friendly, and obedient, and this drives them to protect their owners readily.
Besides, Golden Retrievers are large, intelligent dogs with strong instincts. So, they can read dangerous situations and handle them to protect their owners.
In fact, sometimes, even if you do not train them to be protective, they will be.

When your puppy is getting quite excited that may not be possible, and youll need to put some physical space between you.
If you are on the floor with the puppy stand up.And if you are standing up, turn and walk away from the puppy.
If he follows and starts biting again step over a barrier so that he cant get at you.

Use A Taste Deterrent
You may or may not have heard of Bitter Apple Spray, this stuff is a godsend to all puppy owners. It is a taste deterrent that prevents your puppy from chewing or biting on things they shouldnt. Most puppy owners will spray this stuff on their furniture so that their pup doesnt chew on it.
Bitter Apple Spray can also be used to prevent your puppy from nipping and biting at you. Before you interact with your puppy, spray it on your arms, legs, pant legs, or sleeves, anywhere that your puppy likes to nip at you. Once your puppy bites at you, he will get a bad taste in his mouth and will stop.
Bitter Apple Spray may not work on all puppies, some may actually develop a taste for it. I know that when my Golden Retriever Ellie was a pup this stuff worked amazingly well, but as she got older she developed a taste for bitter things such as crab apples which are extremely sour and she once sucked on a vinegar packet that was lying on the ground!
Stage : Decrease Frequency
Next, we need to focus on decreasing the frequency of biting.
Using a food lure works well for this exercise.
Start the session by saying a phrase such as okay, lets play. Then, while the pup is mouthing you, say stop biting and distract the puppy with a piece of food. Once the pup lets go, reward the pup with ample praise for stoping when asked.
If the pup doesnt let go of your hand, then yelp and squeal ouch, and leave the room for a few minutes and close the door in the pups face.
Allow a few minutes for the pup to cool down, return, ask for a sit and begin again. However, you may need to stop the game for another timeout if your puppy doesnt want to stop mouthing on repeated occasions.
With consistent repetitions, your puppy should quickly learn to let go of your hand when asked.
When you want the play/training session to stop, you say plays over and give the puppy a chew toya chew bone or Kong toy with kibble inside are great chewing distractions for a puppy.

At five months of age, your puppy should no longer be biting with pressure, and it should stop immediately when asked to do so, including no longer making contact with skin or clothing unless invited.

Dont Rub Your Goldens Nose In His Dirt
Its not instinctive behavior for your new Golden Retriever puppy to potty outside it is only natural for him not to go where he sleeps. Some inexperienced dog owners believe that rubbing their puppys nose in their urine or stools after an accident will make them never repeat it. Yuk!

The idea of this exercise is to teach a puppy to accept being stroked and handled in any way, without touching us with his teeth.
Youll need to choose an event marker that tells your puppy you liked what he just did.
The event marker is a distinctive sound. I suggest you use the word YES, but a clickeris also and excellent choice
He gets a treat immediately after the event marker, and no treat if he doesnt hear it.
So for example if you put your hand out near his face and he goes to nip or even mouth your fingers, you say nothing just take your hand away
But if you put your hand out near his face and he sits still and doesnt attempt to mouth you, then you say YES and give him a treat.
Your aim is to be able to stroke your puppys face and ears.
Even around his mouth, without him making any attempt to bite you. But dont expect to get there in one go.
Youll need to start with something less challenging, like a gentle movement of your hand nearby.
You can also make it easier for him by starting this training when he is calm and not distracted.
Later on youll be able to do it when he is more playful and even when he is excited. But for now, keep things simple.
Do Golden Retrievers Ever Really Stop Biting
Golden retrievers have a reputation of being the gentlest of family dogs. But this does not mean that they are without their very basic dog instinct which is to bite. In fact, golden retrievers are hunters so they are naturally inclined towards hunting, chasing and even biting in triggering situations.
As a puppy, your golden retriever probably started off by nibbling on everything it could possibly find from the sofa, to your slippers and maybe even your face. This activity is actually healthy for all puppies because it strengthens their gums and teeth. Its an entertaining phase for an owner, but if you keep encouraging this behavior it will only go on to become more aggressive as the puppy grows up.
Golden retrievers, who grow in their litter around siblings and a mother, usually learn to stop biting when theyre about 8 14 weeks old. This is because around other puppies, they quickly learn that when they bite, they are bitten back. The feedback they get conditions them to not bite in the absence of any threat.
