The Reason For Our Success

Dog Training & Care : Adopting Golden Retriever Puppies

I attribute ALL of this success to the same positive reinforcement program that we use with our 8-week old puppies. It works! Further and most importantly, our training methods produce puppies and dogs that WANT to work. I am more proud of my dogs happy attitudes in the ring than in their actual performance. All of my dogs love to train. Many of the dogs you see at obedience competitions have a do I have to? attitude. Not my Tara and Piper! Our training method builds a desire and love of working in dogs. This desire to please and to work is our primary goal at Summer Brook.

Trained English Golden Retriever Puppies

Our trained English Golden Retriever puppies are trained with a well-developed positive reinforcement program that creates confidence, self-control, resilience, and an amazing and obvious desire to please. Our trained Golden Retriever puppies begin life with a meticulously thought out and implemented program that begins at birth. Then we build on that program to produce well rounded puppies with an excellent start in training. Scroll down to our video links to see for yourselves!

Though the visible results of our training is impressive, the more important difference in our puppies is with regard to what goes on at the core or the heart of our puppies. The training methods we use are designed to teach behaviors as a secondary goal. Our primary goal is to shape our puppies emotional make-up. We train our puppies to focus and think before we teach them to perform behaviors. We concentrate our attention on building confidence, self-control, resilience, an ability to focus, and a love of working for and pleasing a person. Our program is built around the idea that how a puppy is trained is more important than the behaviors they learn. Every aspect of our program is centered on the fact that to us behavior in young puppies should be secondary to attitude.

Good behavior is taught as well. The videos below will show that the behavior our puppies learn as a by-product of our building internal qualities is incredible!

This beautiful cream trained Golden Retriever Puppy is a serious cuddle bum. Her early training has had her out on puppy socializing trips in town, had many car rides, social visits to the vets office, our training hall to meet people and other dogs, experience life and to begin her basic puppy training skills. She is fully crate trained, sleeps through the night and has had all of her puppy shots and de-worming. Feel free to contact us for further details or to visit with us. THIS PUPPY HAS FOUND A FOREVER HOME. We do occasionally have older trained dogs or puppies though so feel free to email or call us just in case we have another one that is about to be ready and available for adoption.

Why Adopt A Golden Retriever From A Rescue

While there are many breeders out there creating amazing little golden retriever puppies out there for you to buy, there are also hundreds of thousands of golden retrievers across the country that need adopting. This is for a variety of reasons.

  • First, Goldens are very popular pets, so there are unethical breeders out there creating puppies for which they cant find homes.
  • Second, many people adopt a gorgeous little pup, only to realize that they grow into a big, shedding dog that requires lots of care and attention. They decide that they simply dont want them anymore.
  • Many loving pet owners need to give up their pets due to a family member who has allergies, moving to a place that doesnt allow animals, moving abroad, or other unavoidable circumstances.
  • Sadly, there are also people who die and leave their pets behind with no-one to care for them, or they simply abandon them.

These are the golden retrievers that find themselves in rescue centers, waiting for new homes.

OUR EXPERIENCE: We had friends buy a Golden Retriever with all the best intentions. Unfortunately, they learned that owning a Golden Retriever did not fit their lifestyle and ended up putting their dog up for adoption.

What To Expect From Golden Retriever Rescue Centers

When you head to a golden retriever rescue center, expect to find a range of dogs that are identifiable as golden retrievers or golden retriever mixed breeds.

They will range in age from puppies to mature dogs and will have different levels of training and socialization.

The rescue center will provide the dogs with medical care, shelter, and training, and at the same time, look for suitable homes for each dog.

Expect the rescue center to ask you a number of questions to ensure you are ready to adopt a golden retriever. They will work with you and consider:

  • Whether your lifestyle will permit you to care for and spend quality time with a pet?
  • Whether you are prepared for the financial burden of caring for a dog for the next 10-15 years, including food, veterinary bills, and so forth?
  • Whether you have the facilities to keep a large dog like a golden retriever?

If you are a suitable candidate, they will then work with you to find the most suitable dog from the shelter for you to adopt.

Dont worry rescues will not place dangerous dogs, such as dogs that bite, in your home.

PRO TIP: If youre looking to adopt a Golden Retriever then you might want to talk to breeders. A reputable breeder will require the people who buy their puppies to return them if for any reason they are unable to continue caring for them. Reputable breeders will sometimes have dogs they are willing to adopt out.

We Did It Thank You For All That You Contributed

The story begins years ago when GRRoW began to consider international rescue. In 2020, during a pandemic, we shared the experience with eight other rescues to bring 100 dogs to the U.S. from China. You can learn through the stories, of Sydney, Wendy, Wang Wang, Bei Bei, Bobby and Sunny that these dogs now have a second chance with new owners who are lucky to add them to their lives. Their owners and fosters are thrilled for the opportunity to experience something special and positive during such negative times.

GRRoW thanks the donors, fosters, fundraisers, transporters, coordinators, dog advocates and cheerleaders for these dogs. In this time of uncertainty, one thing is for certain: these dogs that came into GRROW are in their happy place.

International rescue is not for everyone, and we at GRRoW understand that. We continue to be available for EVERY dog that comes into our area. However, our adoption list continues to get longer. Our adoptions are occasionally closed due to the long wait.

We will continue to look at international options. We invite your support for our efforts by starting an international fund to use when these dogs become available to rescue. We have a generous donor who was so moved by the experience with the China dogs, he started the seed to start the international account. Please consider this option in choosing how your donation dollars are spent.

Mature Dogs Exceptional Forever Homes We Do Not Have Older Dogs Available

Meet Tikka: Golden Retriever Puppy Training To Join Avalanche Rescue Team At Arapahoe Basin

We do not have any older dogs available at this time.

We are currently considering excellent homes for several of our retiring and semi-retiring females. Our first choice would be to keep all of our dogs here at Goldnote. However, now that their breeding careers have come to a close, we recognize that these cherished members of the Goldnote family deserve exceptional forever homes.

Over the years, we have moved towards a more holistic and natural approach to caring for our dogs. We now recommend limited vaccines, natural approaches to flea, tick and heartworm prevention where possible, and a firm commitment to continue with a species appropriate raw diet.

If you would like to be considered as a home for one of our retiring or semi-retiring dogs, please send a detailed email describing your day to day household patterns, family members, other pets, experience with dogs, and type of nutrition that you provided for your previous dogs.

We will only consider families who have previously fed a correct raw, species appropriate diet or those who are prepared to do their own reading about how a raw diet would fit into their lifestyle. We prepare and sell this type of food and meal plan here at Goldnote. We have made the process very convenient for families. However, a solid commitment to this process is required. If you are not familiar, start by reading this article. Reasons to Feed Raw

We will only consider placing dogs in homes that are within a reasonable drive of Goldnote.

Who Trains The Puppies

I do the initial obedience training myself . Jenna is a professional dog trainer and shares Karens positive reinforcement training philosophy.

We also have a team who help keep things running smoothly. Our team works with puppies on potty training, socializing, and obedience skills already trained. In the past our team has consisted of three high schoolers that all worked for us for over three years. However, starting with our 2020 litters, two of the three have moved off to college.

BUT, we are so happy to have our two daughters who are now in their 20s working with us again during 2020. One daughter, Jenna, has been an incredible trainer for many years. She will be making Summer Brook puppies her priority.

The other, Elise, is a socialization superstar and will be taking off college for the winter and spring to work full time with Summer Brook.

We also have a good many friends and contacts that visit puppies. Our goal is to make sure that puppies have a wide variety of ages and types of people to interact with.

Retired Stud Dog Whistler Has Found A Forever Home

Whistler has found a forever home. Whistler will be summering at the family cottage in Muskoka. Of course he will be spoiled year round by his new family who are a long time Golden family. A semi-retired couple have taken Whister and are looking forward to his affectionate manner and companionship that will also keep them active with long walks and retriever games.

Whistler is a 6.5 year old neutered male Golden Retriever. He is now retired as a stud dog and needs a loving forever home. Whistler has stolen the hearts of family after family who have visited with us over the years. Whistler is father to four lovely litters, so he has charmed many families with his exceptional good looks and affectionate disposition. Whistler is happy as a house dog, is fully house trained, walks nicely on a leash, loves retriever games and walks in our fields. Whistler is not suited to dog parks or doggie day care settings though, so please bear this in mind when considering Whistler as an addition to your home. Please contact us for further details about Whistler.

Pricing And Pick Up Options

The Rehomers: [rehomed!] ADOPT: Cream

The price for the training for our three training programs is on our puppy questionnaire. The price of puppies is due when puppies are 5 weeks of age . Training fees must be received by us at least two weeks before puppies are picked up or they must be paid by cash or certified funds.

There will be an additional charge if your puppy needs a health certificate. See our Payments and Policies page for more information. As of the end of February 2019, to our knowledge no airline requires a health certificate for in-cabin flights. Delta required a health certificate for in-cabin travel for a part of 2018. However, they have now reversed that policy and no longer require one. Keep in mind, though, that airline requirements are changing daily. Please consult your own airline. Make sure that whoever you are speaking with understands that you are asking about in-cabin travel. All airlines require health certificates for travel underneath.

Trust the answers you get online. They are the official answers. MANY employees giving out information over the phone are unfamiliar with pet policies. Call and get one answer from one employee. Hang up and call again and chances are good youll get a different answer from a different employee.

Adopt A Golden Retriever

Adopt a Golden Retriever Are You Ready?

So, you think youre ready to adopt? Our first recommendation is that you make sure you know all about golden retrievers. Read up on the breed. Interact with several of them. Talk to people whove had a golden for a long time. Adoption is a lifetime commitment so be informed and be ready. Golden retrievers are a lovable breed, gentle by nature, easy to train and eager to please.

But, they are also big, energetic, have long fur coats and would prefer to have their own way most of the time just like most creatures on earth. They are very social, dont like being alone for long periods of time, and need to be an active part of your life. They incur costs for vet bills, training classes, quality food, fencing in some instances, not to mention toys, leashes, brushes the list goes on. Some like cats and some do not.

If youve decided a golden retriever is right for your family, please consider the following about rescued goldens:

  • AGaG rescues any and all needy goldens without bias to age, gender, size, color, personality, medical needs or other history and, therefore, the profiles of our available goldens can greatly vary at any given time.
  • A typical rescued golden may have one or more issues and adoptive families need to be open to accepting a dog that is less than perfect.
  • Whats Involved?

There are many important factors that go into a successful adoption including learning all about you, your situation and your preferences.
