First on the list of Golden Retriever rescues in North Carolina is Triad Golden Retriever Rescue. Triad Golden Retriever Rescue is a volunteer organization recognized and affiliated with GRCAs National Rescue Committee. The rescue works with national rescue groups and shelters to help Golden Retrievers in need. TGRR program takes in Golden Retrievers from animal shelters, private owners who cannot take care of their goldens, and good samaritans who found unclaimed golden strays.
The Golden Retrievers are usually 2 to 4 years old. Golden Retrievers as young as four months and as senior as 8+ years also come in occasionally. TGRR provides medical attention, spays, neuters them and gives them a sanctuary before re-homing them. The Golden Retrievers long-term safety and happiness are paramount to TGRR. For this reason, the rescue has strict adoption policies. They dont adapt to families with children younger than five or approve of goldens being left outdoors.

As Good as Gold Golden Retriever Rescue of Illinois is a 501 Rescue in McHenry, Illinois. This rescue group specializes in Golden Retriever adoption and educates the public on proper dog care. They are a well-structured organization, composed of a board of directors and strong volunteer support.
Since 2003, this Rescue has saved over 2,300 golden retrievers. At any given time, they hold approximately 35-40 dogs of various ages in their care. As Good as Gold ensures that every dog under their care gets a second chance at finding the right home.
Rescuing An Adult Golden Retriever
Adult golden retriever adoption is an entirely different experience to adopting a puppy. There are several benefits to saving an adult over rescuing a puppy, including:
- Youll know the dogs adult appearance
- You may be able to tell whether its a mixed breed or a purebred golden retriever
- You may be able to identify medical issues and predispositions
- Youll have a good idea of the dogs adult temperament
- May already be potty trained and taught basic commands
Of course, while rescuing an adult golden has several benefits, it has a lot of downsides, too. For example, adult rescue dogs have sometimes been through past traumatic experiences, whether through irresponsible previous owners or because theyve been abandoned and living wild. While goldens are usually gentle, happy dogs, they can even have issues like aggression or fear.
Adult Goldens can come with other harmful behaviors, too. If an adult golden retriever wasnt appropriately trained as a puppy, it may have issues with potty training, bad leash etiquette, destructive behaviors, or lack of respect towards humans. While they can be trained out of these behaviors, its much harder to un-train an adult dog than train a puppy in the first place.

The good news for goldens is that theyre in high demand and seem to be scooped up right away if they need a new home.
Of course, thats not so good news if youre trying to rescue a golden.
But official golden retriever rescues arent the only way to find a rescue golden retriever.

People sometimes comment in there that they cant keep their golden for whatever reason and ask if someone will take them in.
This is one way for you to get lucky and find a furry, golden friend.

The story begins years ago when GRRoW began to consider international rescue. In 2020, during a pandemic, we shared the experience with eight other rescues to bring 100 dogs to the U.S. from China. You can learn through the stories, of Sydney, Wendy, Wang Wang, Bei Bei, Bobby and Sunny that these dogs now have a second chance with new owners who are lucky to add them to their lives. Their owners and fosters are thrilled for the opportunity to experience something special and positive during such negative times.
GRRoW thanks the donors, fosters, fundraisers, transporters, coordinators, dog advocates and cheerleaders for these dogs. In this time of uncertainty, one thing is for certain: these dogs that came into GRROW are in their happy place.
International rescue is not for everyone, and we at GRRoW understand that. We continue to be available for EVERY dog that comes into our area. However, our adoption list continues to get longer. Our adoptions are occasionally closed due to the long wait.

When you are adopting a golden retriever from a rescue, you may be taking on a dog that has already been abandoned or inadequately cared for once.
The rescue center will want to be sure that you are prepared to take on the responsibility of a large dog, as they wont want to see the pup suffer neglect a second time.
Rescues will work to match you up with a dog that suits your lifestyle and wont match you up with a dog that has serious behavioral problems.

Unfortunately, many folks think dogs that end up in rescue are all genetically and behaviorally inferior. Not all breeders will accept returns, so choices for giving up dogs can be limited to animal welfare organizations, such as rescues, or the owners trying to place their own dogs. Good rescues will evaluate the dog before accepting him/her , rehabilitate if necessary, and adopt the animal only when he/she is ready and to a home that matches and is realistic about the commitment necessary to provide the dog with the best home possible.

Too many dogs end up in rescues and shelters every year because they dont fit in well with their adopted families. Rescuing Vs Adopting A Puppy
Rescuing a golden retriever while its still young and impressionable is the closest experience youll get to adopt one from a breeder. However, this doesnt mean youll receive the same quality of puppy, either. Usually, dogs that are surrendered to rescues or rescued off the street dont have any breeding or parental history attached to them.
Typically, this wouldnt be a problem many people take pride in rescuing dogs that need homes. However, it isnt always possible to tell what medical conditions a puppy will have when they grow older. You wont be able to determine what the puppy will grow up to look like, either you might think youre adopting a golden retriever from a golden retriever puppy rescue, but it could be a mix or a different breed altogether!
To be fair, these problems can be inherent with irresponsible breeders and not just the golden retriever rescue, but lets operate under the assumption that you would be adopting from an ideal, responsible breeder. With a breeder-quality puppy, you have a good idea of what youll get from an appearance and a health standpoint. In comparison, a rescue puppy has no such guarantees.
That aside, though, the puppys temperament is where you can expect a relatively blank slate. When you head to a golden retriever rescue center, expect to find a range of dogs that are identifiable as golden retrievers or golden retriever mixed breeds.
They will range in age from puppies to mature dogs and will have different levels of training and socialization.
The rescue center will provide the dogs with medical care, shelter, and training, and at the same time, look for suitable homes for each dog.
Expect the rescue center to ask you a number of questions to ensure you are ready to adopt a golden retriever. They will work with you and consider:
- Whether your lifestyle will permit you to care for and spend quality time with a pet?
- Whether you are prepared for the financial burden of caring for a dog for the next 10-15 years, including food, veterinary bills, and so forth?
- Whether you have the facilities to keep a large dog like a golden retriever?
If you are a suitable candidate, they will then work with you to find the most suitable dog from the shelter for you to adopt.
Dont worry rescues will not place dangerous dogs, such as dogs that bite, in your home.
PRO TIP: If youre looking to adopt a Golden Retriever then you might want to talk to breeders. A reputable breeder will require the people who buy their puppies to return them if for any reason they are unable to continue caring for them.
