English Cream Golden Retrievers As Pets

The English creams are excellent pets and make amazing companions to people of all ages and families with small children. Affectionate, gentle, and fun-loving, these dogs get along with everyone and like to be involved in all family activities. They also get along with other pets and will enjoy having someone to keep them company while you arent around.

Please note, although they like children and are exceptionally gentle, English creams are large dogs. They can easily knock a small child in the heat of a play session accidentally. To avoid accidents of this sort, never leave young children unsupervised with your dog.

Furthermore, show your children how to interact with your dog and play with him nicely. Explain why they should never pull your dogs ears and tail, and supervise all playdates. No matter how socialized and well behaved your dog and your kids are, they should never be left unsupervised.

Golden Retriever Feeding Guide For Seniors

As your Goldie gets older he will become less active and will need fewer calories to stay on his ideal weight. Your pooch will be considered a senior when he is eight years old, so make sure to tweak his diet around this age.

An older Golden Retriever will need around 900 calories per day served in two equally spaced meals. However, if your senior dog needs to lose some weight, you will have to put him on a and lower his calorie intake.

You should talk with your vet and see if there is a need to transition your pooch to senior dog food at this point or not. Food for older dogs has fewer calories and is supplemented with glucosamine and vitamins that are beneficial for older dogs. However, many seniors continue to eat regular food without any side effects, but you should check just in case you need to change his diet.

Feeding Schedules And Guides

Small puppies need small and frequent meals. As a rough guide:

  • Four meals a day until three months
  • Three meals a day until six months
  • Two meals a day until one year

Many people worry a lot about getting food quantities and schedules exactly right and want to know how many ounces or grams of puppy food to give their Goldie pup at each stage of their lives.

You can find all this and more in our guide:

Try not to worry too much it isnt an exact science!

Golden Retriever Puppies Are Smart Puppies

Golden retriever puppy is called a smart puppy because you can train them quickly.

If you have a dog that is not taught very well, it might be your fault, or your dog might have a lower grain quality.

You can enhance the brain capacity of your puppy through having a constant connection in the environment or other people.

Also, be sure that your new puppy has a different type of interactive toys that will also boost his interest in that thing.

Also, take your extra time training your new dog correctly and adequately.

Some puppy kindergartens might be helpful on turning your golden retriever puppy into a well-trained, knowledgeable, and well-behaved one.

However, you should also need toknow that to see better results.

Your puppy is also in need to interact with some training exercises inside or outside of the class.

It will also inspire your puppy to train very well if he feels your presence.

We all know that golden retrieverpuppies will probably enjoy their learning time when they are with their owner.

They are also a type of dog that loves to spend their whole time with their parent because it makes their bond stronger and happier.

Golden Retrievers And Children

If you have a young family then Golden Retrievers can be fantastic with children. If socialised properly from a young age, Retrievers can be quite calm and tolerant. While they usually have a great temperament, its best to always supervise your dog with children.

As puppies, its normal for Retrievers to be mouthy, which means they have a tendency to nip and play bite. This is especially true when theyre teething. Although they dont mean this in an aggressive way, its best to use positive training techniques to let them know that biting you can be sore and isnt a fun game. That way, when theyre adults theyll know this isnt a good way to play with humans or other dogs.

Always supervise children and vulnerable adults with your Golden Retriever and make sure you can to help avoid any conflicts. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and play with dogs with care and kindness, to prevent any issues.

What Are Some Problems That Can Arise From Having A Hyper Golden Retriever

If you have a hyper dog, then chances are that the problem has already arisen. As weve established, all dogs have a lot of energy when theyre young and some breeds have more than others. The Golden Retriever is one such breed.

Hyperactivity is the name we give to energy thats unchanneled, and this is where youll find problems that wont just go away. A hyper dog is a frustrated one and will demonstrate lots of unwanted behaviors that are harder to stop the longer they go on.

Chewing, , scratching, moulting and even biting and other aggressive behaviors can all be the result of a frustrated dog with too much energy to burn off. But a lot of the time its not just excess energy but boredom, too.

Dogs need more than just physical exercise. All the long walks in the world can still result in a hyper dog if theres no mental stimulation to go along with those walks.

Golden Retrievers are incredibly intelligent, and they love to use their brains.

It means that training and learning games and tricks are ways to channel your Golden Retrievers energy, and you dont always even have to leave the house to do it.

Once your dogs mental needs are met, youll find his physical energy levels arent quite so demanding.

Best Collars For Golden Retriever Puppies

Here is a list of the best collars for a golden retriever puppy that are safe and simple to use for a first-time parent. All of the collars on this list meet all the points I touched on earlier and so I encourage you to take a look at each carefully and make sure that it is the right one for you. Without any further ado, I give you the top 5 puppy collars for golden retrievers.

Canine Communication Pack Hierarchy And What It Means To Be A Dog

A puppy in the litter learns all about pack hierarchy, about dominance and following the lead of others.

They also learn how dogs talk to one another, canine body language and the subtle physical signals that dogs give off to show how theyre thinking and feeling.

They learn about appropriate play and how to interact with others of their species safely, considerately and happily.

A puppy thats taken away too soon will miss out on a lot of this and will be under-socialized to other dogs. This can very easily lead to a dog who is scared of other dogs, doesnt know how to interact with other dogs and is simply socially awkward.

This can mean less timeor no timeinteracting with his own species, having to be on the leash in dog parks and woods when other dogs are around and ultimately living a less fulfilling life than they could otherwise have had.

Are You Raising A Golden Retriever Puppy

Teaching Your Golden Retriever Puppy To Wait

The practice of patience: Waiting. What a lesson to teacheven for humans.

For your puppy, waiting means not moving when we move away. But you can also use this lesson later on for things like waiting at doors, before you let them out of the car, or in their crate. Unfortunately, using it for teaching them to wait on tables is way past their learning capabilities.

There are two aspects to teaching your puppy to wait:

  • Duration: How long can your puppy wait for.
  • Distance: How far away from your puppy you can get, and still manage to make them wait where they are.
  • First, well work on duration.

  • Ask your puppy to sit exactly the same as you have done many times before.
  • Dont give your marker word immediately. Instead, count to 5 in your head before marking and rewarding.
  • Smile while youre counting not only will you look dashing, but it will let your puppy know that they are doing it right. To them, if youre happy, it means theyre doing something right.
  • Repeat this about 6 times in each session. Over the next 2, days build up the time to 10 seconds remember that youll need to keep practicing about 5-6 times per day in order to build that time up!
  • Now, lets practice distance.

  • Ask your puppy to sit as you did before.
  • Give your puppy a cue with your hand which means wait we typically use a flat hand like a stop sign. Or a flat hand like paper when playing rock, paper, scissors.
  • Take a half step backward with one foot and immediately return and reward your puppy.

Have you ever heard of a English Cream Golden Retriever? Also known as the White Retriever, AKA the Platinum Retriever. This pale coated dog IS NOT a new and rare breed.

In fact, the English cream and your typical golden are the same dog breed but with different breed standards.

While the platinum golden retriever looks slightly different than your neighboring golden, this isnt a new rare breed as some breeders claim. Similar to its American cousin but different at the same time, the platinum-coated retriever has a lot to offer.

If you are looking for a devoted, highly-trainable, family dog, the English cream retriever might be the right dog for you!

However, while very popular, platinum-coated retrievers are still hard to come by and a purebred puppy can make a big dent in your bank account.

In this article, Ill tell you everything you need to know about this type of golden retriever and help you decide if this is the right dog for you.

    Golden Retriever Breeder Research

Dog, Golden Retriever puppy with rose

A responsibly bred Golden Retriever puppy will usually cost you upwards of $1000 in the USA .

However, this price will be considerably higher for show quality dogs. It will also vary depending on your location and demand.

Dont forget that the cost of sale is just the beginning. Your biggest expense is likely to be annual pet health insurance. Its a good idea to get some quotes in for this it will be several hundred dollars a year.

You can find breeders through your national Golden Retriever breed club. Here are a few Golden Retriever breed clubs from around the world:

Finding the breeders is the first step. But, you also need to ensure they are a good and reputable breeder, not just someone trying to make a quick profit.

Where Should Your Puppy Sleep The First Night

We raise and train all of our service dog puppies to sleep in a crate beside our bed. Basically, our night stands are wire dog crates.

For our Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever puppies we use 36 inch Midwest Life Stages Dog Crate. The Midwest crates come with a wire divider that allows you to resize the crate as your puppy grows.

If youre Lab or Golden is a little larger you might need the 42 inch crate. We needed the 42 inch crate with Apache.

One essential item we put in the crate with our puppies on the first night is the Snuggle Puppy with Heartbeat and Heat Pack. This has helped many of our pups sleep through the first night without a peep.

    They Are Fairly Quiet

A golden retriever is not a small dog, and it is not very often that you can find a large-sized dog that has the ability to be calm and collected.

This also means theyre easier to train than most breeds. You will find that they can learn very basic levels of obedience with ease and they will soon learn advanced levels.

Unfortunately, because theyre so quiet, gentle, and friendly, they make very bad guard dogs. The lovable and calm nature still makes the golden retriever one of the most popular dogs in the United States.

Golden Retriever Feeding Guide Puppy Adult & Senior

You have probably noticed that no matter how much food you put in his bowl, your Goldie wants to eat more and acts like he is on brink of starvation! Being a large and energetic dog, your Golden Retriever has a ravenous appetite and can eat a lot. However, overfeeding is never good and could be avoided with the help of a Golden Retriever feeding chart.

Knowing how much to feed your Golden Retriever is always tricky but essential for his well-being and health. Goldens are prone to obesity and joint problems, which can only be exacerbated with an inadequate feeding plan.

Naturally, a Golden Retriever puppy and an older dog dont have the same nutritional needs, and you will have to base your feeding plan according to your dogs age, activity level, weight, and overall health.

In this article, you will find everything you need to know about feeding your Golden Retriever, whether he is a puppy, adult, or senior. So, stay with me to find the right feeding plan and meal schedule for your Goldie.

Once you bring your Goldie puppy home, its crucial that you feed him the right amount of high-quality puppy food. Skipping meals can slow your puppys growth and development, but overfeeding can cause your pup to grow too quickly, which can lead to bone and joint problems.

Most first-time owners think that their puppies should be chubby. In truth, Golden Retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food.

Should You Get A Golden Retriever Puppy 12 Things To Know

Golden Retriever Puppies can be considered as one of the most popular dog breeds that you can find in the United States and other countries.

They became famous because of their good character and having an attractive appearance.

We all know that having a dog inside your house will give you responsibility for a long time. 10-12 years of responsibility to be exact if you have a golden retriever puppy.

If you are a type of person that was not born as a dog lover but has a golden heart on taking care of breed dogs such as the goldens, here are the 12 things about what to know before getting a golden retriever puppy.

    Their Coats Are Beautiful

Its safe to say that most people want their pets to be cute and fluffy and the dazzling coats that goldens have are one of their most iconic features.

Many would probably prefer to get a golden retriever for its look alone even if it didnt have all these fantastic traits.

These lustrous coats come in many different blends of gold, and it is very easy to maintain these through lots of grooming. While being a great companion these coats are sure to complement the beauty of your home.

Fair warning: the thick, soft undercoat of a golden retriever means youre in for a lot of shedding. But a good, regular brushing helps to combat this. And, because your golden loves spending time with you, youre both likely to enjoy these brushing sessions!

    They Are A Garden’s Enemy

If you’re working on an award-winning garden, a Golden Retriever may not be the right breed for you. While the likelihood of digging increases with boredom, Golden Retrievers seem to be attracted to gardens.

As I mentioned, Golden Retrievers love mud, so in addition to digging, Golden Retrievers also tend to play, sleep, or roll in flower beds.

    Golden Retriever Puppy Growth

As a medium to large breed, Golden Retriever puppies carry on growing up to and beyond their first birthday. In fact growth isnt complete until the middle of the second year.

However, those last few months are mainly about filling out and your Golden puppy will have reached close to their maximum height at between 9 and 12 months of age.

Sample buyer reviewOur dog had developed a bit of a gas issue with another leading brand that featured mostly red meat, so I wanted to go back to a food with mostly chicken. After a lot of research, I settled on Wellness Complete, and weve been very happy with it. Our dog readily goes for the food, and for the first time with any kibble, she will eat a few pieces out of our hand as a treat. I am impressed by the nutritional balance and the glucosamine and chondroitin since she is 80+ pounds, and it seems to have eliminated the gas problems.

Golden Retriever Puppy Collar: What Size To Get & Type

So a few weeks back I was looking into buying a new collar for my nieces golden retriever. Shes pretty young, so I tend to help out with anything she needs for her pup from time to time. Only because ve had my golden now for around 2 years and from having her I have managed to pick up a thing or two.

Anyway, my niece a few weeks ago was asking me about the right golden retriever puppy collar size.

Of course, this can be different for each and every dog but there is generally a few guidelines that are always useful to follow. So I did just that and gave her a list of exactly how to find out what the best size for her pup and surely enough it was able to help her.

Now you may be asking yourself the question of how this ties back to you and your problem now. Well, I am going to be sharing everything that helped her with you today.

Why Is My Golden Retriever So Fat

The most common reason why a dog is overweight is because the dog eats more calories than it can expend. Obesity is more common in older dogs. As dogs grow older, they become less active. So, a dog eats more food or even the same amount of food as when they are young and energetic, they will likely gain weight.

Is Leaving A Puppy With Its Mother Too Long Problematic

First of all, leaving a puppy with its mother longer than necessary isnt as harmful as taking it away too early as long as its socialized well. And this is the important thing when it comes to leaving a puppy in the nest for too long.

A puppy must be introduced to as many sights, sounds, environments, people and other dogs and animals as possible before they reach 14 weeks of age. Anything you dont want a dog to be scared of they must be exposed to in this early part of their life.

This 14 week window of opportunity is a time where a puppy has little fear and instead has heightened curiosity that compels it to explore and test things out. After 14 weeks, as a natural instinct for survival in the wild, the puppy will begin to fear new things it hasnt already experienced.

The first 14 weeks is also the time when a puppy will form its strongest bonds with people and other animals. And so for the best possible relationship and strongest bond between your puppy and you, this is a time when you want your puppy living with you, seeing your entire family and social network so your puppy truly integrates and feels a part of the pack of humans around it.

So think to yourself, if you get a puppy at 8 weeks of age, you have 6 weeks to take them to the shopping mall, the park, the pet shop, to meet as many people as possible, get them in the car, on the beach, in a swimming pool etc. get them at 12 weeks and you have only 14 days!

Are Golden Retrievers Calmer Than Labrador Retrievers

Both these breeds are very similar in temperament, which makes them both the most popular dog breeds in the country. They are high-energy, fun-loving and active breeds, with very similar needs.

Its impossible to say whether one breed is calmer than the other. Its thought that Golden Retrievers have the edge on their Labrador cousins when it comes to friendliness, so Labradors are usually a better choice as a guard dog but energy-wise, theyre really neck and neck.

Will You Buy A New Puppy Or Rescue One

It can be a tough decision, choosing between a puppy from a breeder, or Golden Retriever puppy rescue.

Hopefully, the points we briefly discussed above will make the decision a little easier.

If you still arent sure, take a look at our guide to puppies vs dogs.

You can find a list of Golden Retriever puppy rescue centers on our main breed information page.

But, for now, lets take a closer look at puppies from breeders.
