Coat Color And Grooming
The English cream retrieverâs breed standard permits any shade of gold or cream coat color, which is neither mahogany nor red. This means these dogs donât necessarily have to have a cream or platinum coat. However, platinum dogs are highly popular and there is always a higher demand for puppies with a paler coat.
The English cream has a medium-length, silky, water-resistant double coat that sheds moderately all year round. This breed also goes through a heavy shed twice a year â in the spring and fall. Youâll have to brush your dog at least three times a week to prevent mats and tangles and keep his coat in tip-top condition.
When it comes to bathing, you can bathe your English cream once in a couple of months or more often if he gets very dirty. If you need to bathe your dog more often, use a hypoallergenic natural dog shampoo that wonât damage your dogâs skin or coat.

They are such wonderful dogs for all humans. So extremely sweet!!
Although bred for hunting, I think they are best for companionship. They make wonderful therapy dogs. Their faces and their actions show how loving they are and their fur is so very soft.
They also are very active. They love hiking and swimming. Oh, and tennis balls!

Yes, most English Creams do have blocky heads.
They also typically have wavy coats, wider muzzles, and stockier bodies.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not From England
No, most English Cream goldens youll find in America are not from England.
Just like French fries are not from France.
All golden retrievers originated from Scotland in the mid-1800s when Lord Tweedmouth bred a Tweed water spaniel and a yellow wavy-coated retriever.
Most American breeders of these goldens either breed dogs from here in the States or import their dogs from all over the world, including:
- Denmark
- The Netherlands
So how did English Cream goldens get their misleading name?
According to Bev Brown, the Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club, were the first ones to write up the breed standard.
And in the early 1900s, all dog shows in Britain were held in England.
So in America, we called the champions of those dog shows, English Champions.
The English seems to have stuck with goldens that look like the English champions in those days, so 100 years later were calling them English Cream Golden Retrievers.

Many people think that the AKC doesnt recognize English Cream golden retrievers.
English Cream goldens are still golden retrievers, just with a fancy name and typically light coloring.
Here is what the AKC Breed Standard has to say about light golden retrievers: Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable.
Although it is undesirable, golden retrievers are golden retrievers, so if you have an English Cream golden, they can still be registered with the AKC as a golden retriever .
An interesting point here is that even though this light color is undesirable according to American Breed Standards, thats not the case with other countries.
Heres what the UK Breed Standard says about color: Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.
Heres what the Canadian Breed Standard says about color: Lustrous golden of various shades
And heres what the National Golden Retriever Council Australia says about color: Any shade of cream or gold but neither red or mahogany.
So although the American Breed Standard does not like the cream color, other countries are more accepting of it.

What is our deposit?
Our deposits are $250 to hold your puppy and goes toward your total. We have a real business so we do things professionally.
How do you pick your puppy?
We temperament test our puppies and observe them since birth. We are professionals at matching puppies with families lifestyles, but the choice is ultimately yours, which puppy you get. Our Golden Retriever puppy pick-outs are at around 6 weeks. We allow you to choose out of a group of puppies depending on your pick spot. Our out-of-state buyers usually use Facetime or Facebook to pick their puppies out with live video. You’ll see weekly videos and pictures of the puppies as they grow, so you it will be an informed decision for you to choose when it’s your turn. We will share with you their temperaments, sizes and builds, so you get a great match. You are also welcome to visit the farm and pick your puppy out in person. Most of our buyers reserved to visit once when they pick their puppy up at 8 weeks.
