Golden Huggs Rescue Inc

Golden Retriever Falls In Love With His Annoying Little Sister | The Dodo

Golden Huggs Rescue is made up of a very small group of volunteers who have made it our mission to find loving suitable homes for displaced, abandoned, or stray dogs with golden personalities with our partners outside of New England.

Our dogs have either been relinquished by their owners, found as strays, or abandoned at the shelter door. It is irrelevant to us how they have managed to find themselves in these circumstances. It is only in their best interest that we try in earnest to get them out.

All of our volunteers have been involved in the rescue and placing of dogs for years. We are committed to doing our part to decrease the numbers of dogs that are euthanized at primarily southern shelters.

What Makes The Golden Retriever Dog So Popular

The breed was valued for the hunting abilities so ably produced by the careful blending of foundation stock, and only later became popular as a pet. After the Golden Retriever made the transition, however, this dogs rise to the height of popularity was meteoric and remains one of the most popular of all breeds in America.

Touch The Dog With Caution

Shelter or rescue dogs are usually under stress. Thus, you always need to be cautious when touching it. You may also see how it reacts when you touch it.

A Golden Retriever likes getting touched or petted. Thus, if you cautiously touch it and begs for more, it can be a good sign for you.

Other things you can note would be tail-wagging and endless sniffing and licking.

A Rescued Golden Retriever Loves Her Toys Like They Were Her Puppies

By Timothy Roberts

Eleanor is a beautiful golden retriever that spent the majority of her young life in a puppy mill. When she was rescued from the puppy mill, she was taken to her forever home and had no idea how to react.

According to The Dodo, her foster mom, Jill, spoke about how difficult life was for Eleanor in a big house.

She wasnt accustomed to roaming about, so she went to the smallest room and even had a hard time walking.

That all started to change when Jill gave her a toy. Immediately, Eleanor took the toy and started to treat it like a puppy. Considering the fact that while in the puppy mill, she always had her puppies taken from her right after birth, it was obvious that she enjoyed the comfort of the toy.

You would never see Eleanor without one of her babies in tow. Jill also saw something one morning and she realized that Eleanor had turned a beautiful corner. Suddenly, the shy and uncomfortable dog began to wag her tail and she found joy in life.

Jill referred to her transformation as being incredible and the joy goes both ways because Eleanor makes her laugh daily.

It all started when Eleanor was rescued by HavaHeart Rescue. The type of treatment she received at the puppy mill was beyond imagination. On , the rescue talked about those difficulties, saying:

Do Golden Retrievers Make Good Pets

Golden retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds when it comes to pets, especially for those looking at larger dogs, rather than small pooches.

While every dog is different, the golden retriever breed has a lot of characteristics that make them ideal pets:

  • They are affectionate and friendly and will bond with you very quickly.
  • They wonât bark at or intimidate your friends and neighbors as they like pretty much everybody .
  • They get along with other dogs, so they fit in well in homes that already have pets.
  • They bond with children quickly and form mild protective instincts plus, they are very aware of their own size and strength and know how to be gentle with children.
  • They are very intelligent, which means they are easy to train, and are able to figure out what is required of them in new situations with minimal guidance.
  • They are eager to please and motivated by reward, which again, makes them very easy to train.

But there are also some challenges to be aware of before adopting a golden retriever:

None of these are reasons not to adopt a golden retriever. But they are things to be aware of and prepared for before committing to having one of these amazing dogs in your life for the next 10 to 15 years.

Do Golden Retrievers Need Another Dog As A Companion

Golden Retrievers Video Chat Between Sleepovers | Best Animal Friends | Dodo Kids

Golden retrievers are sociable animals that will get on well with other dogs and also cats, which means they make a great second pet. But no, a golden does not require another dog as a companion.

And just because you have another dog will not mean that your dog can be left alone for longer periods of time.

Test The Dogs Reaction To Noises

The dogs reaction to noise can tell a bit of its personality. Thus, you need to give it different tones and noise, especially with your voice.

Golden Retrievers want attention, so its a good sign if you see the dog trying to listen to you. The dog may even throw small barks that say its excited for you.

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Can Golden Retrievers Be Left Alone

Pin by Bill Edwards on Golden Retievers

Golden retrievers are very social dogs and they donât like to be left alone for long periods of time.

They are also highly intelligent, which means they are smart enough to get into trouble if you leave them with nothing to do for hours on end.

Every golden is different, but as a general rule, they should only be left alone for a maximum of eight hours at a time.

Dogs For Sale Near Me

This is a personal rant!

Whenever I see dogs for sale near me, I`m overwhelmed with anger because I know that those animals are becoming marketing assets, the better they look, the larger the profit becomes. That`s why we don`t even buy dog food from shops that also sell pets.

It should be for you as well! If you truly love animals and know there is a place where they sale dogs near you, just discourage your friends to buy a pet from that place. Rather look for an animal shelter where you can rescue a dog for free.

Are Golden Retrievers Expensive To Maintain

Golden retrievers can be relatively expensive to maintain, mostly because they are large dogs and, therefore, generally need to eat a fair amount.

They can also have steep medical bills when they get older as they are prone to a few medical conditions, such as joint issues and cataracts. You should probably expect to spend at least $1,000 a year maintaining a golden retriever.

What Are The Things To Consider When Adopting A Golden Retriever From A Rescue

A scared Golden Retriever panics during this Hope For Paws rescue.

When you are adopting a golden retriever from a rescue, you may be taking on a dog that has already been abandoned or inadequately cared for once.

The rescue center will want to be sure that you are prepared to take on the responsibility of a large dog, as they wonât want to see the pup suffer neglect a second time.

Rescues will work to match you up with a dog that suits your lifestyle and wonât match you up with a dog that has serious behavioral problems.

Your dog may well have habits and hangups from their previous owner, so be prepared to spend extra time training and socializing them.

Why On Earth Would Anyone Want To Adopt A Rescued Golden Retriever

After all, arent they like used cars? Who wants someone elses problems? If the dog is so wonderful, why would anyone give him away? If he was a stray, why didnt someone try to find him? Id rather buy a golden puppy so I know what Im getting, and besides theyre so cute!

Golden rescues often hear a variation of this conversation. Many prospective golden owners are just not convinced that owning an older pre-owned golden is better than buying a puppy. But there are a number of reasons why adopting a golden retriever from a rescue that carefully screens and evaluates its goldens can provide an even better alternative.

Unfortunately, many folks think dogs that end up in rescue are all genetically and behaviorally inferior. But, it is not uncommon for us to get $500-1000 dogs that have either outlived their usefulness or their novelty with impulsive owners who considered their dog a possession rather than a friend or member of the family, or simply did not really consider the time, effort and expense needed to be a dog owner.

Not all breeders will accept returns, so choices for giving up dogs can be limited to animal welfare organizations, such as rescues, or the owners trying to place their own dogs. Good rescues will evaluate the dog before accepting him/her , rehabilitate if necessary, and adopt the animal only when he/she is ready and to a home that matches and is realistic about the commitment necessary to provide the dog with the best home possible.

What To Expect From Golden Retriever Rescue Centers

When you head to a golden retriever rescue center, expect to find a range of dogs that are identifiable as golden retrievers or golden retriever mixed breeds.

They will range in age from puppies to mature dogs and will have different levels of training and socialization.

The rescue center will provide the dogs with medical care, shelter, and training, and at the same time, look for suitable homes for each dog.

Expect the rescue center to ask you a number of questions to ensure you are ready to adopt a golden retriever. They will work with you and consider:

  • Whether your lifestyle will permit you to care for and spend quality time with a pet?
  • Whether you are prepared for the financial burden of caring for a dog for the next 10-15 years, including food, veterinary bills, and so forth?
  • Whether you have the facilities to keep a large dog like a golden retriever?

If you are a suitable candidate, they will then work with you to find the most suitable dog from the shelter for you to adopt.

Donât worry rescues will not place dangerous dogs, such as dogs that bite, in your home.

PRO TIP: If youre looking to adopt a Golden Retriever then you might want to talk to breeders. A reputable breeder will require the people who buy their puppies to return them if for any reason they are unable to continue caring for them. Reputable breeders will sometimes have dogs they are willing to adopt out.
