Myth: The Kids Need A Puppy To Grow Up With
Fact: Small kids and small puppies are often not a good combination. GRs do not mature emotionally until 2 to 3 years of age, but physically they mature very early. That cute fluffy puppy rapidly grows into a big hairy handful of dog, and the newness/novelty of pup ownership wears off quickly. It is not uncommon for a 6-month-old Golden to weigh 40 to 70 pounds, and most have the energy level of a rocket. Small children do not do well with a bounding, bouncy puppy who knocks them over frequently. Add to that the teething and chewing phases, and the fact that puppies usually dont know the difference between human skin & toys and chew bones, and the children quickly tire of the dogand may even be frightened by her rowdy antics. And of course, it can be very hard for parents to look after tearaway toddlers and a wild & mischievous puppy at the same time. For these reasons, GRR as a general rule does not adopt out Goldens younger than age 2 to families with children under age 8.

Austin Rescue Group Saving 13 Golden Retrievers From Turkey
AUSTIN, Texas An Austin rescue group has announced that 13 golden retrievers will soon have new Texas homes after being rescued from Istanbul, Turkey.
Gold Ribbon Rescue said five dogs arrived in Austin on Nov. 9, five more will arrive at Manchaca Village Veterinary Care on Nov. 10 and the final three will arrive the following week.
Gold Ribbon Rescue has a history of rescuing the beloved breed from dire situations. The group rescued another 14 dogs from Istanbul in 2015. And, in 2016, it helped save 10 dogs from the streets of Mexico City. Recently, in 2019, the group saved 15 dogs from China slaughterhouses.
The organization has dubbed this mission “Tamara’s Turkey Dog Rescue Mission” in honor of a long-time volunteer who is sponsoring the initiative.

YGRR was founded in 1985 and in 37 years has placed over 5,000 Goldens in new homes throughout New England. YGRR started as a primarily Golden Retriever Rescue but now also rescues other dog breeds as well. YGRR has a 21-acre property known as Riverview in Hudson Massachusetts is a centralized rescue, resource, and adoption center.
The Riverview property contains general kennels with indoor and outdoor runs and heated flooring. It also contains medical isolation kennels, a senior & special needs center, a grooming room, outdoor play yards, and a home simulation room. The home simulation room is used to give dogs individualized attention as they would receive in a real home. Open during the spring and summer months only, YGRR also has an in-ground swimming pool.

Dvgrr Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue
DVGRR has been rescuing and adopting Golden Retrievers since 1993. In that time they have placed over 6,000 Golden Retrievers in new homes. A non-profit organization, DVGRR has placed Goldens in new homes throughout Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania.
In 2009 DVGRR implemented the Project Home Life program, which works with puppy mills survivors and helps them transition into homes with families. DVGRR has multiple events throughout the year, including monthly open houses which include snacks and a tour of their facility.
The monthly open houses are a great way for adopters to meet and interact with the dogs available for adoption. DVGRR is a multi-structure campus, which includes Buddys Animal Rescue Klinic , the Lynne Glennon Sanctuary for Senior Goldens, and Puppy Mill Survivors.
As well as the Thomas & Marianne Ludwig Adoption and Activity Center where open houses are held. Check out the calendar on their website for other events, such as their Annual Gala, and golf outings. Proceeds go to supporting their rescue efforts.
The DVGRR website is also a great resource for continuing education in regards to training, puppies, senior dogs, and dog breed information.

GRs are prone to hip dysplasia, heart and eye problems, and skin and allergy problems as well as thyroid and kidney diseases and, occasionally, behavioral problems. A puppy can seem fine for his first 6 to18 months, then develop hip dysplasia or other health problems. As far as health goes, adult dogs are much closer to what you see is what you get. Bear in mind, also, that the mere fact that a puppy has AKC papers doesnt guarantee anything as far as his ultimate health and overall personality is concerned. It simply means that the pups mom and dad were of the same breed.

Myth: They Are So Little And Easy To Care For At That Age
Fact: Pups, just like human infants, require more attention than they reciprocate for at least a year. Puppies under 6 months of age require an average of 5 hours of care per day to raise, socialize and train properly. The reality is that a puppy is a peeing, pooping, chewing and shredding machine with a very limited attention span for nearly the first year of its life. At about age 1, given adequate training and socialization, hell begin to interact more with humans, play ball, understand not to jump on the kids, and be able to understand whats an appropriate chew toy and what isnt, etc. But even at age 1, Goldens are still puppies, with loads of energy, curiosity, and mischief-making ability.
These normal phases require a lot of time, patience and training to get through. Most people with busy families and lives do not have that kind of time. If you work full time, who will take care of a small pup during the day when it needs to go outside, eat, play, etc.? If the family has numerous outside activities and commitments that take them away from home for much of the day, how will a small puppy or energetic young dog fit in to that?
