Adoption Applications Closed For The Holidays

Interested adopters and SEVA GRREAT supporters:

During the winter holiday season we are going to temporarily paws the adoption process. We would like you to understand why, so here are the reasons.

First, it is very important for a newly adopted Golden to join his/her forever family when things are at their most ânormalâ. The holidays are anything but ânormalâ in most households ~ itâs a hectic time of year with more of everything ~ more traveling, more time away from home shopping and visiting, more guests, more foodâ¦and this can be very stressful for a new Golden family member.

Second, our dedicated volunteers are also busy with their families and need a well-deserved break during the holidays.

Also, many of the millions of homeless pets in North America are pets that were returned or abandoned as a result of an âimpulseâ buy. Since many pets are bought impulsively during the holidays, we support âno pet buyingâ over the holiday season.

Adoption applications are now closed and will reopen in the new year. Soon, we also will not be posting any dogs as available for adoption to our already approved families until after the holidays.

In the meantime, all the Goldens in our care are happily spending this time with their wonderful foster families and are safe and sound and happy ! Theyâre even probably sharing in the spoils of leftover turkey.

Golden Retriever puppy for adoption near Richmond ...

GRREAT is a not-for-profit organization thats committed to locating a new home for stray, abandoned, and unwanted Golden Retrievers. The organization serves the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and eastern West Virginia.

The staffing at the organization comprises mostly of volunteers and the organization places about 100 Golden Retrievers annually while striving to inform the public on the breeds characteristics and the rewards associated with giving a rescued home a dog.

Most of the dogs that end up here usually come from previous owners although they still collaborate with local shelters and welfare organizations and sometimes get puppies. All their Golden Retriever rescues in Virginia are placed into a foster home and undergo an evaluation of their habits, temperament, medical requirements, and energy level.

Upon rescuing a dog, they spay / neuter them, test them for intestinal parasites, and update vaccinations. Many of the Golden Retriever rescue dogs are less than 5 years old. However, the organization receives puppies aged below one occasionally typically from abandoned litters.

This Golden Retriever rescue in Virginia depends on donations to cover the costs associated with treating rescued dogs many of whom come with health needs, requiring instant and costly attention. Besides cash donations, people are welcome to donate dog-related supplies that they provide to the foster families looking after their rescued dogs.

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Other Ways To Find A Rescue Golden Retriever

The good news for golden retrievers is that there arent many goldens without a home that need to be adopted the demand is greater than the supply.

Of course, thats not so great news for those that want to adopt a golden!

But if the rescues dont have any goldens available, here are two other ways to find goldens in need of a home:

The first way is to join your local golden retriever Facebook groups.

Sometimes people that can no longer keep their goldens will post in these groups asking if anyone can take them in.

These reasons can often include changes to the family, current family members didnt get along with the new pup, or other unfortunate circumstances.

The other way is to get in contact with your local golden retriever club.

People may reach out to them if they need to surrender their dog, or some of the members might know someone who has a golden they need to give up.

This may be a long shot, but if youre patient and determined to rescue a golden, it could be worth it.

And speaking of golden retriever clubs, when you do get your golden retriever, they can be a great resource for you.

What To Expect From A Golden Retriever Puppy

Golden Retriever, Puppies, Dogs, For Sale, In Virginia Beach, Virginia, VA, 19Breeders, Chesapeake

Although you have your expectations, its best to take note of the following. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together.

As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home.

At the same time, prepare yourself for your pets habits in the first weeks:

Noisy Sleeping

Snoring is common in Golden Retrievers, so prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep. It can even grow louder as they age.

Moderate Training

Golden Retrievers responds well, especially to positive reinforcement. Thus, they dont need too much effort in training.

Squeaky Toys

Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active.

It Is Also Important That You Look At The History Of The Golden Retriever Before Making The Final Decision

There are many reputable Golden Retriever breeders but if you dont know the history of the dogs before buying them, you can end up buying one from an illegal puppy mill or worse still, a puppy farm. Be wary of anyone that is asking for money upfront as this usually indicates that they are hiding something.

If you are looking at Golden Retriever puppies in Virginia for sale, you should always check the breeders references as they will provide you with the history of the breed and what kind of problems they have had. As well as this, you should also look at the health records. to make sure that the Golden Retriever puppy will be healthy and strong.

In addition to the Golden Retriever puppies in Virginia that you are looking for, you will need to look into spaying and neutering, which are required if you want to keep this breed.

This means that they will need to be sterilized when they are still in their puppy stage of life to prevent unwanted breeders from breeding them. They will also need regular vet checkups to make sure that they are doing well and if there are any health issues that you should take care of before they become too serious.

Why Adopt A Golden Retriever From A Rescue

While there are many breeders out there creating amazing little golden retriever puppies out there for you to buy, there are also hundreds of thousands of golden retrievers across the country that need adopting. This is for a variety of reasons.

  • First, Goldens are very popular pets, so there are unethical breeders out there creating puppies for which they cant find homes.
  • Second, many people adopt a gorgeous little pup, only to realize that they grow into a big, shedding dog that requires lots of care and attention. They decide that they simply dont want them anymore.
  • Many loving pet owners need to give up their pets due to a family member who has allergies, moving to a place that doesnt allow animals, moving abroad, or other unavoidable circumstances.
  • Sadly, there are also people who die and leave their pets behind with no-one to care for them, or they simply abandon them.

These are the golden retrievers that find themselves in rescue centers, waiting for new homes.

OUR EXPERIENCE: We had friends buy a Golden Retriever with all the best intentions. Unfortunately, they learned that owning a Golden Retriever did not fit their lifestyle and ended up putting their dog up for adoption.

This Golden Retriever rescue in Virginia doesnt turn away any dog because of health or age. They welcome even sick young dogs who often find placement in foster homes after they obtain any essential medical treatment and undergo an assessment for placement.

The Golden rescue also accepts mixed Golden Retriever breeds provided theres space and the dog appears to be a Golden Retriever with a similar personality. This rescue depends on grants, donations, and fundraising activities to operate. Therefore, theyre always accepting food, supplies, and money even if youre not ready to rescue or adopt.

The rescues goal is to find permanent homes for orphaned Golden Retriever rescues in Virginia of all genders, breeds, and ages. They concentrate on rehoming special needs and senior dogs. Moreover, they offer sanctuary and hospice for those who enter the program but dont find a home.

A selected adopter must be willing to dedicate two weeks for the dog to settle into the new home. This rescue wont place a Golden Retriever rescue in a home where other pets exist if its not certain the dog will get along with other pets.

What My Fantastic Owners Are Saying

We got Hook in November of 2016. He has been the most amazing dog and are so blessed to have him in our life. He is going to turn 10 months old and looks so much like his Mom and Dad. Thank you Grayland for such an amazing dog! We named him Hook because we are a Disney family and he is the Captain of our new home. We will definitely recommend you to future Golden owners.

Hello, it’s been 3 weeks since our Penny came home. I just wanted to thank you for this precious pup. We love her very much and she’s become an integral part of the family. She’s doing great with house training and is even using door bells to let us know when she needs to go out. She can sit, lay down, and shake. Penny has an awesome personality and loves everyone . She just had her 10 week check up and our veterinarian said “she’s perfect in every way. She’s exactly what a golden should be.”. So thank you so very much.

We are so thankful to have our little Piper. She is quite a gem that has added that extra spunk to our Golden family. We now have 4 and plan on adding to our brood with just one more from VA Golden Retrievers. We have had such a positive experience. You can definitely see that Mr. Nelson loves his Goldens. They are friendly, energetic and well bred. Thank you for sharing a part of your family with us.Fran, Roger & Andrew

I just wanted to let you know what a blessing our puppy has been to us!
