What Dog Toys Are Better Suited For Teeth Cleaning

Golden retriever puppy playing with chew toy

Most toys are equipped with groove and massaging numbs with the aid of scraping plaque away from your canine teeth and gums. Rope toys are also one of our favorites for this reason, as the fibers will act in the same way as the bristles on your toothbrush if your dog chews them enough. You may rub a small amount of flavorful dog toothpaste on a rope toy to facilitate cleaner teeth chewing.

Golden retrievers are lively, smart dogs who love to play, particularly when you enter the game! When finding the right chew toys for golden retriever puppies or adults, remember to choose one that doesnt crack or crack. Soft toys can be given to your golden Retriever, but watch them make sure they dont tear the toy and eat the stuffing!

OUR EXPERIENCE

Our dogs originally played with Goughnuts at a friends house many years ago. Recently we bought Raven a Goughnut of her own. Shes not the heaviest of chewers so not a good test subject. However, one of our most destructive puppies, Dublin was never able to destroy a Goughnut.

Were going to get one of these for our friends aggressive chewer, Higbee to see if he can destroy the much-vaunted, Goughnut.

PROS

  • They have a strong smell like a tire.
  • Power chewers have been known to destroy the Goughnut.

Make Your Home Safe For Your Golden Retriever Puppy

An essential part of preparing for a new dog is to puppy-proof your home and yard before you bring your pooch to the house.

Youll need to make your home safe for a puppy and then keep it safe as your puppy becomes a dog because even older dogs get curious about things like the trash and get into trouble if you make it easy for them to do so.

Make sure your dog cant reach any electric cords, remove items from low tables where your puppy might reach them, and put away anything vital that you think might harm your dog.

Here are a few other items youll need for your golden retriever at your home:

  • #4 Puppy padsWhile not everybody feels the need to buy these, they can come in handy while you are potty training your dog. If you have an especially lovely carpet, it might be a wise idea.
  • #5 Puppy toysPuppies require several different types of toys to keep them busy. Chew toys are essential because your puppy will need to chew while teething. Your puppy can learn what is proper to chew and chew toys can help keep your puppy from chewing on your items. Make sure you buy the right size of toys for your golden retriever puppy. You dont want to purchase tiny toys that your dog might choke on.
  • #6 Travel harnessYoull want this while you are riding with your dog in the car.
  • #7 Baby gatesIf you want to keep your puppy out of individual rooms in your house, a baby gate will be an idea.

Goldens, like all puppies, have sharp little teeth that will eventually fall out only to be replaced by adult teeth. Just like humans this process can be uncomfortable and the act of chewing can help alleviate some of that discomfort.

When thinking about the best chew toys for golden retriever puppies youll have to take into account the material, safety and entertainment value of them. A puppy might find a porcupine interesting but it would make a veeery poor toy.

    Best Toys For Aggressive Chewers

Now that you know more about the type of toys out there and what to watch for, we are going to go over the list of toys that we recommend for aggressive chewers. When giving your dog a new toy, never leave them unsupervised. Watch and observe while your dog is using the toy to make sure that pieces are not breaking off and that the toy is the appropriate size for your dog. If the toy is too small, it can be a choking hazard or intestinal blockage issue.

Tips For Playing With/entertaining Your Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are typically playful dogs with a cheerful disposition. These canines do require a lot of attention, though. Even if you dont have a lot of time, we recommend that you try one of these play activities for at least 10 to 25 minutes each day.

  • Playing fetch in a backyard, in a dog park, or on a beach
  • Stuffing a chew toy with a treat and then hiding it under some pillows or blankets you dont mind your pup digging through
  • Engaging in a little tug-of-war, not so much to stir up aggression, but enough to keep your dog from boredom
  • Rolling a few different toys across the floor at the same time to make your dog think fast and pick an item

    Dental Toys Vs Chew Toys

English Cream Golden Retriever Puppy Playing & Chewing On Football Toy – 11 Months Old

You might have heard about dental toys and how theyre good for your dogs gums and teeth.

The thing about dental toys is that all dental toys are chew toys, but not all chew toys are dental toys.

Dental toys are toys that have little ridges or bumps on them that can clean teeth and massage gums.

Some of the toys mentioned below are both dental toys and chew toys.

    Using Interactive Toys For Training

We already mentioned that interactive toys are great for building a bond with your puppy, but theyre also great for teaching things like drop it and take it, or even sit and down.

To teach drop it with a tug rope you simply stop tugging, hold the rope very still, and wait for your puppy to eventually get bored and let go.

Praise them for dropping it and then after a minute or two of tugging, do it again.

Once your puppy is good at letting go when you stop, you can start saying, drop it, when you stop moving.

After enough repetitions of this, theyll learn to drop it on command.

I also like to reinforce commands like sit and down while playing tug.

Ill ask Oliver to drop it, then ask for a sit or down, then when he obeys, his reward is to resume playing.

This works well because he loves tug, so when I ask him to do something and Im holding the tug rope, hes highly motivated to do it.

The unique shape and texture of this fetch stick make it easy for your dog to grab onto, and it makes for a great chew toy as well! It measures 13.75 long and weighs 0.21 kilograms.

Tips For Enhancing Playtime With Your Golden Retriever

You should provide your golden retriever with at least 30 minutes of exercise and playtime twice a day. A fenced-in yard is ideal since your dog needs space to run and play, but you can also take your pup for walks and head to a dog park where they can run and play.

Here are a few tips to make playtime more fun:

  • Golden retrievers are social dogs. They need to feel like theyre a member of the family and will bond with their owners by playing. You can turn playtime into a social activity by playing games like fetch and getting everyone in the family involved.
  • Golden retrievers were bred for hunting waterfowl and small game. Playing fetch comes naturally to them. Teach this game early, and provide plenty of opportunities to play fetch with different items.
  • Your dog needs intellectual stimulation. Golden retrievers are smart dogs who enjoy working and solving problems. They need new toys, new activities, and new challenges.
  • Golden retrievers are playful by nature. They will often initiate play by bringing you a favorite toy. Provide plenty of toys for independent play, and take a short break to play with your dog if they seem restless or bring you a toy.
