Turkish Golden Retrievers Find New Homes In Colorado

The Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies is going the distance to help dogs in need.

If youre hoping to add a four-legged friend to your family, look no furtherthan Turkey, that is. Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies has undertaken a significant mission: rescuing and rehoming stray Golden Retrievers from distant Istanbul.

Turkey may seem arbitrary, but Kevin Shipley, executive director of GRRR, says having a Golden Retriever as a pet was long considered a sign of affluence in the country. Everyone wanted these beautiful Goldens, which were initially very rare and expensive, Shipley says. Puppy mills started all over the place for Golden Retrievers, and as soon as the prices dropped, they dropped as status symbols. They would release the dogs that wouldnt sell into the streets and the forest.

GRRR has rescued and rehomed more than 4,000 Goldens and Golden mixes in Colorado, and, like many other Golden Retriever rescues, has a waiting list for adoption. But in Turkey, the shelters are overflowing. The largest has 4,000 dogs, and keeps them 20 to a pen. The stray dog population is 50,000, and we estimate that 2,000 of those are Golden Retrievers, Shipley says.

Instead of being deterred by the numbers, Shipley focused on how his organization could make an impact. One has to concentrate and celebrate where they can make a difference, and not wallow in the sadness of what they cant do, he says.

What Is A Golden Retriever Rescue For Adoption

The Golden Retriever is known for being loyal and trustworthy. Unfortunately, some owners of Golden Retrievers or other life circumstances can be less than trustworthy. As a result, these dogs can end up being homeless and abandoned. Theyre either left to fend for themselves on the streets as strays or are placed in cages in less-than-ideal shelters.

A Golden Retriever rescue shelter takes a different approach than letting them roam alone. These operations are committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of Golden Retrievers. They most often provide needed medical care to meet an immediate need or prevent further complications that the Golden Retriever may be facing.

Through the intentional work of the staff and volunteers at these shelters, dogs are given a second chance at life and families are able to welcome in a new friend.

With a rescue thats specific for Golden Retrievers, the staff is often better equipped to provide insight and information about the specific breeds temperament and personality. Many of the volunteers also have Golden Retrievers or are familiar with dogs as they provide helpful insight as you adopt your own dog.

As choosing a breeder isnt always the best option for everyone, rescues can provide an amazing opportunity for families to save a dogs life. This is mainly because Golden Retriever rescues are already grown-up adults over the age of 2 years old. They have passed their puppy dog phase and make great companions!

Colorado Gives Day: Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies

Kelli Marko had no idea that adopting a dog would change her life. She just knew that she wanted to rescue a dog with her husband, who had fond memories of a childhood Golden Retriever. The couple applied to adopt a dog through Denvers Golden Retriever Freedom Rescue, and soon welcomed a 9-week-old Golden mix named Brodie into their home.

Theres something very special about Brodie, Marko says. Hes curious, and so charming and endearing.

Because of his personality, Brodie has cultivated fence friendsneighbors who stop by to pet him or toss him a ball. He loves hiking, swimming and car travel, and has been a hit at family reunions, where hes tolerated endless amounts of poking and prodding from children. Hes even well-behaved with Markos chickensdespite the fact that baby chicks look quite similar to moving tennis balls, as she quips. Plus, hes always up for a good snuggle.

Since Id never had a dog before, I really did not understand the bond that I would have with Brodiethat he would be my best friend, and that life is better when hes with me, Marko says.

Brodie is one of over 3,200 dogs rescued and rehomed by Golden Retriever Freedom Rescue since 2001, when a small group of passionate citizens founded the nonprofit in Denver. Since then, the organization has expanded to hundreds of volunteers with the shared goal of rescuing Golden Retrievers and mixes.

  • Many dogs available at pet stores or online through both private websites and classified sites such as Craigslist originate from puppy mills.
  • Puppy mills are large commercial operations that put profit above the well-being of the dog. You can think of them as the equivalent of factory farms for dogs. They are often filthy, overcrowded, and are cruel or negligent in their treatment of dogs. Lack of adequate access to food, water, socialization, and veterinary care is typical.
