GGLRR places ~250 Labrador Retrievers each year in the greater SF Bay Area! See Recently Adopted for examples of Labs we have placed. Some Labs are adopted by our pre-screened adopters before they are posted on this website. If you are willing to pay the adoption fee in advance, you may be a good candidate to join our pre-screened adopter program to receive early email notification about GGLRR Labs before they are posted on the website. Explanations of our adoption process and the PSA program are contained on the How to Adopt page. We also provide a listing of Other Labs available for adoption from individuals or shelters.
Many of our dogs are surrendered by owners who very much love their dogs but, for a variety of reasons, cannot keep them and have made the difficult decision to find them a new forever home. We applaud these owners for allowing us the opportunity to find these dogs new homes, and we do our very best not to be judgmental or critical of the choices that these owners make.

Nering With A Rescue Group In Turkey
When possible, we will extend our rescue resources to help dogs that are outside of Southern California. Such an opportunity arose and we have partnered with a rescue group in Turkey to help find homes for a few of their dogs. Turkey has a long history of trying to handle and manage the stray dog population which dates back more than 100 years. Despite the shelters and rescues they have in place, it is estimated that more than 100,000 stray dogs roam the streets in Istanbul alone. Mixed breeds and even purebred dogs are abandoned once they outgrow the cute puppy stage and their needs become bigger than adopters originally planned. These dogs are left to find refuge in front of markets, gas stations, and restaurants and must rely on the people who work there to survive. It is not unusual to find packs of stray dogs congregated on beaches and in the forests in Turkey.

Through education, breed-specific rescues, and a shift in Americans favorite dog breeds, Golden Retriever rescues nationwide have seen a dramatic decline in Golden Retrievers needing to be rehomed. We continue our efforts to support Goldens in need including those from puppy mills and trusted international rescue partners.
If you are seeking a purebred Golden, you should expect a lengthy wait. Young, perfectly trained or puppy Goldens are even more rare. Many of the dogs we see have special needs and even these have many applicants. We value all of our previous adopters, donors, volunteers and interested families. However, we can only prioritize based on the best fit for the dog. Those families with children under 5 years old often have a longer wait as some of our dogs arrive with limited history on their ability to live with small children. We value the safety of our adopters and only those dogs with a known history with young children can be placed with families who have young children or frequent young visitors.
We understand and share your love of the Golden breed. If you decide to consider purchase over adoption, please be sure to read our information about how to choose a responsible breeder so you dont inadvertently contribute to the horrors of puppy mills.

We Did It Thank You For All That You Contributed
The story begins years ago when GRRoW began to consider international rescue. In 2020, during a pandemic, we shared the experience with eight other rescues to bring 100 dogs to the U.S. from China. You can learn through the stories, of Sydney, Wendy, Wang Wang, Bei Bei, Bobby and Sunny that these dogs now have a second chance with new owners who are lucky to add them to their lives. Their owners and fosters are thrilled for the opportunity to experience something special and positive during such negative times.
GRRoW thanks the donors, fosters, fundraisers, transporters, coordinators, dog advocates and cheerleaders for these dogs. In this time of uncertainty, one thing is for certain: these dogs that came into GRROW are in their happy place.
International rescue is not for everyone, and we at GRRoW understand that. We continue to be available for EVERY dog that comes into our area. However, our adoption list continues to get longer. Our adoptions are occasionally closed due to the long wait.
We will continue to look at international options. We invite your support for our efforts by starting an international fund to use when these dogs become available to rescue. We have a generous donor who was so moved by the experience with the China dogs, he started the seed to start the international account. Please consider this option in choosing how your donation dollars are spent.

Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue will be bringing Labs available for adoption to various Bay Area location on select weekends. Come meet some of our Labs and maybe find the one who has been waiting for you! Reps will be there to answer questions about our adoption process, the Labs we have available for adoption and to discuss finding the best match for forever homes. Please do not contact these vendors, who generously allow us to use their facilities, for information about GGLRR adoptions as they are not prepared to answer these types of questions.
Please keep in mind that adoptions are not a “first come” situation so you don’t need to get there early. We meet with everyone during the fair who is interested in a specific Lab as well as those who have contacted us in advance via phone to find the best home for each dog given their specific needs and personality. Typically, Labs do not go home with people just meeting them at the fair — it’s a busy and exciting environment so we usually ask everyone to go home and carefully consider instead of making an emotional decision at the fair .

Goldens Without Borders Rescue
With a Golden Retriever rescue in every state and more than 80 Golden Retriever rescues in the U.S., we saw a great need to help the thousands of Goldens that are killed each year in overseas countries from the horrific dog meat trade.
We are exclusively an international rescue and we rely on both passenger and cargo flights to safely transport our rescued Goldens home to America. Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue is the 3rd largest Golden Retriever rescue in the country and 2nd largest in the western United States. This dog shelter is one of your best chances to adopt a Golden Retriever.
The best aspect about SCGRR is that they place their Golden Retrievers in foster homes and they are never kenneled. Every Golden Retriever is temperament-tested, vetted, and socialized before adoption. The caveat is that this Golden Retriever rescue only adopts to homes in the Southern California area. If youve never had a Golden Retriever before, this could also be a place for you to foster a dog and make sure that are you prepared to officially adopt.
To adopt from this Golden Retriever rescue, you will need to complete an online application on their website. Their placement team will review the application and get in touch with you to schedule an in-home interview. During the interview, they will request a $25 minimum donation for the time to interview you and read over your application.

As you may know, after the shelter-in-place orders were putin place last year, we closed adoption applications in May 2020 for volunteersafety and because we had very few Goldens and many more applicants.
Since January, NGRR has had a few more Goldens come into ourcare, which makes us cautiously optimistic that there will be more Goldens toplace with adopting families than there were last year. NGRR has re-opened our Adoption Applications on April 1. As restrictions ease, please bepatient as we continue to adhere to socially distanced, mask-wearing encounters,preferably outdoors. Please also be aware that the wait time for an availableGolden may be several months or more, so your patience is greatly appreciated.

Norcal Golden Retriever Rescue
NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue is a volunteer organization whose primary purpose is to rescue and place Golden Retrievers in Northern California in loving and safe homes. The rescue operates from the Fresno area all the way to Oregon and into the Lake Tahoe area.
This rescue has over 150 volunteers across NorCal who donate their love and time to rescue over 400+ Golden Retrievers every single year. These volunteers take on a variety of tasks from fostering, testing temperaments, rescuing Golden Retrievers out of shelters, and keeping track of dogs. In addition, these volunteers will help you match with a Golden Retriever of your choice.
To adopt a Golden Retriever, you will need to fill in an online application on the NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue website. A volunteer will review your application and contact you. If all is well, the volunteer will arrange an at-home visit to make sure that you are able to care for one of these dogs.
If everything checks out, the volunteer will run through their extensive database to find you the best Golden Retriever match. If they find a match, they will arrange a visit with you to meet the dog at a foster home. If its a match, you will sign the adoption papers and leave with the Golden Retriever.
