Founded in 1993, Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue is a non-profit organization that has rescued and placed nearly 6,000 Golden Retrievers with new loving and caring homes in the southern Pennsylvania area, as well as New Jersey and Delaware. Delaware Valley features property of over five acres, dubbed the Golden Gateway. If The Tables Were Turned
We recently took in two little onessurrendered shortly after they were purchased , because their people decided they either werent dog people, or that a puppy was too much work. One approached us about surrender we were so grateful that they wanted the best for their little boy. The other was talked out of selling the puppy on Craigslist. Thankfully, they agreed.
In both cases, we were just happy to be able to get them to families who understood the commitment that comes with adoption or purchase of a dog of any age.
We have an extensive application process and contract, but it got me to wondering what the dogs would put in a canine contract for people if the tables were turned. It might go something like this:
You realize that I am not a shiny penny or an impulsive decision. You have thought through the choice to add someone to your family, and the time and expense that goes with it.
You promise not to treat me like that fancy bike you got that sits in the garage. I am not a toy to be played with for two weeks and forgotten.
You know that neither one of us is perfect. We all come with some baggage. I will try to leave mine behind if you will do the same and we can make a fresh start together.
I promise to be patient with you when you leave things out that could get me in trouble, and you promise to be patient with me when I chew them up. We will both agree that it is better and safer not to do either.

The One That Got Away
On Christmas Day, I returned to the garden.
It has been about a month since I have spent any real time there except to rake and do light cleanup.
Thats what happens when foster puppies come to call.
Little Daisynow Gabbywas with us for a month. Arriving at only seven weeks, she had already been passed around and surrendered for the birth defect on her eye.
At 11 weeks, she was healthy and fat and strong enough for her surgery.
Her eye was removed as the hairy tissue had grown to cover nearly 90 percent of her cornea and was extending to her lower lid. She sees better now without the constant obstacle blocking her view. She recovered quickly and was home in time for Christmasher new mamas bundle of joy .
Happy life, little girl.
In Northern California, we dont put the garden to bed for the winter as much as we tidy up.
There is still color and foliage to admire
but work to be done.
When the blossoms fall, the bees finally retreat enough to find the source of the pesky Bermuda grass. The damp ground Is much more gracious about giving up the fugitives it harbors abolishing all excuses. As the leaves shed, the structure of the garden comes into view. Its time to start editing select trees and shrubs being careful to leave basal foliage growth protected against expected frost.
Time is measured by the passing seasons
and the growth of foster pups.
But Lily was different.
So she came home with us where we could swim her in our pool multiple times throughout the day.

Inspired by their first adoption of a homeless golden combined with what they learned of show dogs once they are unable to be shown, Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest was founded in 1985 with the mission to give these dogs a loving and caring home.
Over the years, many volunteers and generous donors have given Retrieve a Golden the energy, selflessness, love, and funds to rescue and rehome more than 9,000 Golden Retrievers and Golden Retriever mixes. Their rescue mission started in Minnesota but over the years has expanded to surrounding areas such as Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Wisconsin.
To make sure their goldens go to the best and most suitable homes, Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest has an application process that must be completed. This includes the completion of their application for a specific dog. Then, their team screens these applications, sending them to foster homes who then make sure the applicant would be fitting for the dogs current situation. It is the foster families that choose their applicants, contact them, and set up an in-person meeting with the dogs. All of this results in the perfect golden finds its perfect home.

Where Else Would She Go
The call said she was a breeder-surrendered puppy with ectopic ureters. I knew what that meant: she leaked pee.
In the past, she was the kind of puppy that Jody would take up to her house shielding us from possible heartache if the outlook looked uncertain or grim. But Jody is gone, and an eight-week-old pee girl needs to have her bottom kept clean and dry to stave off infection. I knew that. Where else is she going to go? I knew the answer. She had to come home with us.
We have fostered a lot of puppies. She was too small for her age. At eight weeks, she should have been pushing 15 pounds she weighed in at only 11. She had a bacterial and yeast infection already.
I had a dream that first night. I dreamt that she died.
I reached out and touched the hand of time and knew it was not my friend. We waited for the ultrasound appointment but knew that surgery would be at least 4-5 months away if the condition was repairable. If it wasnt? I didnt want to think that far ahead.
I cleared out the living room and dining room so she would be on washable stone floors. Every supply came out and more. Mops, buckets, washable pee pads, towels, plastic covered beds, sheets, and gates everywhere. I set my office inside and left one covered couch so I could be close by. It was a small world for her, but a happy one. She ruled her domain, and the big dogs allowed it.
She earned many nicknames: Little Miss Puddles, Miss Pee-a-lot, Tinkle Bell, the Terror of Tinkle Town, and more.

Golden Endings Golden Retriever Rescue
Golden Endings Golden Retriever Rescue is a non-profit organization that services central and southeastern Ohio. Their dogs have come from a variety of places such as shelters, veterinarians, animal control, or found on the streets.
When Golden Endings brings a new dog into their rescue, the dog receives medical care as needed. They are spayed or neutered, tested for heartworms, and placed on a preventative program with annual booster vaccinations. The Goldens are assessed for temperament and personality to determine their compatibility with other dogs and children. Some of the dogs then receive obedience training through local correctional facilities.
Golden Endings has some basic guidelines for placing one of their dogs in adoptive homes. The first step in the process is the completion of an adoption application. The Goldens must live indoors and must become a loved member of the family. If it is necessary, Golden Endings encourages the use of a crate to keep the dog in when alone at home. They stay in touch with each Golden Retriever owner after the adoption, including telephone calls or the occasional visit to make sure everything is going well.

A Senior-to-Senior Connection program to match Homeward Bounds older Goldens with retired persons and couples who are at least 60 years of age, not working, and on a limited income. They also provide Golden Retrievers that may be unadoptable with a happy and healthy living environment, whether it be on Homeward Bounds ranch, or with a foster family.

Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue And Sanctuary
A non-profit organization that has been rescuing golden retrievers since 2002, Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary, located in Capon Bridge West Virginia, continues to be a leader in rescues for dogs in the eastern United States.
Almost Heaven accepts senior or special needs Goldens from shelters, owner give-ups, and other rescues and is a refuge for those Golden Retrievers who otherwise may be labeled hard to adopt by ordinary standards. Some of their Sanctuary Goldens are only with them until well enough to be adopted, or until the perfect home is found.
Those dogs unadopted will receive love and care at the Almost Heaven Sanctuary for the rest of their lives. No Golden Retriever has ever been turned away from Almost Heaven because of age or health. Young, healthy Goldens are also welcomed. These Goldens are frequently housed in experienced Foster Homes where they receive any necessary medical treatment, including spay/neuter, begin learning manners when needed, and are evaluated for placement.
All dogs adopted from Almost Heaven are spayed or neutered and are current on vaccinations, have had fecal and heartworm tests, and are on heartworm preventative. A minimum adoption fee is required at the time of adoption to help offset expenses, which currently average around $400 for each dog rescued. The minimum adoption fees range between $275 $650, depending on the age, and are not negotiable unless individually noted on the animals write-up.

As you may know, after the shelter-in-place orders were putin place last year, we closed adoption applications in May 2020 for volunteersafety and because we had very few Goldens and many more applicants.
Since January, NGRR has had a few more Goldens come into ourcare, which makes us cautiously optimistic that there will be more Goldens toplace with adopting families than there were last year. NGRR has re-opened our Adoption Applications on April 1. As restrictions ease, please bepatient as we continue to adhere to socially distanced, mask-wearing encounters,preferably outdoors.
