They Are Not Annoying In Any Way

Golden Retrievers need foster homes

They are indeed enormous, athletic, and cheerful, but they are also peaceful and relaxed and this is true of golden retriever puppies. Generally speaking, golden retrievers are not the ideal choice for security guards. Nonetheless, if being friendly and engaging is necessary, you’ve come to the right place.

What To Expect From Golden Retriever Rescue Centers

When you head to a golden retriever rescue center, expect to find a range of dogs that are identifiable as golden retrievers or golden retriever mixed breeds.

They will range in age from puppies to mature dogs and will have different levels of training and socialization.

The rescue center will provide the dogs with medical care, shelter, and training, and at the same time, look for suitable homes for each dog.

Expect the rescue center to ask you a number of questions to ensure you are ready to adopt a golden retriever. They will work with you and consider:

  • Whether your lifestyle will permit you to care for and spend quality time with a pet?
  • Whether you are prepared for the financial burden of caring for a dog for the next 10-15 years, including food, veterinary bills, and so forth?
  • Whether you have the facilities to keep a large dog like a golden retriever?

If you are a suitable candidate, they will then work with you to find the most suitable dog from the shelter for you to adopt.

Dont worry rescues will not place dangerous dogs, such as dogs that bite, in your home.

PRO TIP: If youre looking to adopt a Golden Retriever then you might want to talk to breeders. A reputable breeder will require the people who buy their puppies to return them if for any reason they are unable to continue caring for them. Reputable breeders will sometimes have dogs they are willing to adopt out.

Do Golden Retrievers Need Haircuts

The short answer to do golden retrievers need haircuts? is no. Shaving a golden retriever or cutting its hair too short is a common mistake that can permanently damage its coat. Regular feather trimming is sufficient.

Golden retriever double coat ensures correct thermoregulation and protects the dogs skin from environmental hazards. Without the coat, a dog becomes vulnerable and isnt able to regulate its body temperature properly.

How To Cut Golden Retriever Claws

Cutting a golden retrievers nails doesnt take much time or experience, but it isnt foolproof. Always use sharp dog nail clippers and make your dog accustomed to the tool before trimming its nails.

Wait until your dog is relaxed and take its paw in your hand, pressing gently. The tricky part with trimming a golden retrievers nails is that they are black, so you cant see the quick.

Make small snips and check the cross-section of the cut nail after every snip. You know youre approaching the quick when the middle of the nail becomes darker.

How To Trim Golden Retriever Feathers

Golden retrievers have longer hair on the back of the legs, paws, tail, and stomach, known as feathers. These feathers give golden retrievers a gracious look when theyre walking or running and add a slight wave to the coat.

However, the long fur quickly gets tangled and dirty, so you may benefit from learning how to trim golden retriever feathers. You will need a narrow-tooth comb and a pair of scissors or thinning shears.

Start by brushing your dogs fur and getting rid of tangles. Then, take your dogs tail by the end and hold it horizontally. Shape the tail feathering as a large dogs ear, leaving it about three to five inches long.

If your goldie is very fluffy, trim the feathering slightly shorter. Then, move on to the legs. Here, trimming is more about removing the excess volume rather than length, so use your judgment but dont trim the feathering too short.

As you move to the paws, cut the fur shorter to prevent it from collecting dust and dirt. You may leave the stomach as is or trim the feathering slightly but be careful because some dogs have very sensitive stomachs.

If you feel uncomfortable trimming your dogs feathers, better opt for professional grooming because you dont want to accidentally hurt your pet.

They Need A Job To Do

Local golden retrievers need foster homes

Weve already established that Goldens are smart and eager to please. So, why not take advantage of those characteristics and give your Golden a job to do. Not only will your dog benefit from having his brain exercised, but you will benefit from a calmer and happier dog.

They are called Retriever for a reason, they were born to fetch and retrieve. So, why not let your Golden fetch the newspaper for you, put away his own toys, or fetch things around the house for you like pieces of dirty laundry.

Golden Retrievers can easily be trained to do pretty much anything if you take the time to show them how. They love to please you and will work for treats and praise.

Golden Retrievers are happiest when they have a job to do, and when they know they are doing it well. Have you ever noticed a Golden carrying a stick? You also would have noticed the big grin on his face, because he had a job to do. Carrying that stick and bringing it home was his job.

Goldens are hard workers, and natural people-pleasers, which makes them popular working dogs. Many Golden Retrievers have jobs as assistance dogs, therapy dogs, scent-detection dogs, and starring roles in movies and tv. shows.

Im not saying that you need to employ your dog in a real job, but if you give your dog some simple tasks to do around the house, you will notice a happier dog.

They’re Devoted Beyond All Reasonable Expectations

However, although retrievers have a seemingly limitless capacity for affection, they will express it whenever the opportunity presents itself. This includes welcoming us when the keys are placed in the door and sitting at our feet when we’re feeling down and out, among other behaviors. There are no misunderstandings, and if they are kind to everyone, you will always be given priority. Let’s face it they’re the type of dogs who will make your day a little brighter.

They Have The Potential To Be Beneficial To Your Mental Health

Like sleeping with other dogs, experts have shown that sleeping with the golden retriever can reduce feelings of worry and despair. On the other hand, this breed has a warm and loving demeanor, making it the best choice for sleeping. There are some similarities between their function and a hairy, giant breathing pillow, which can aid in healing while you are engaged within a REM cycle.

Unconditional Love And Attention

This is first on the list of what Golden Retrievers need and should be a no-brainer. All dogs need to be loved, but I really believe this breed needs constant love and attention.

Golden Retrievers do not do well left alone. They love to be with their family at all times. They are highly social and crave human interaction.

Sometimes they can be very needy for attention, pawing at you to keep petting them, or following you everywhere like your shadow.

If you plan on getting a Golden Retriever, you must have time every day to spend with your dog. If you are away from home most of the day, you should plan on hiring a dog walker, or take your dog to doggy daycare. This way your Golden will stay active and entertained throughout the day.

If you are looking for a faithful companion that is always by your side, a golden is for you. But, if you cant handle that much togetherness, and need your own space, you should look at a different breed.

Golden Retrievers Are Extremely Friendly

As sociable dogs, Golden retrievers are typically eager to meet and play with other dogs and humans they come across on walks or at the park. Its not uncommon to feel the leash yank when a potential friend passes by.

How Many Hours Can Goldens Be Home Alone

If you work a full-time job or have other responsibilities that keep you away from your Golden, you may be wondering just how long its safe to leave your pup home by themselves?

The general rule of thumb is that adult Golden Retrievers can be left alone for around four to six hours per day. Goldens definitely should not be left alone for longer than eight hours, as they can face severe mental and physical health consequences as a result of being regularly left home alone for too long.

While the general rule is that you can leave a dog home alone for six hours, and they should be ok, this doesnt apply to all dogs. If your Golden retriever suffers from separation anxiety, needs frequent potty breaks, or has health issues that require human assistance, then leaving them home alone for extended periods may not be a safe option at all.

They Need At Least 2 Hours Of Exercise Daily

Golden Retrievers are high energy, especially when they are young! You will find that the younger your Golden is, the more effort it will take from you to tire them out.

If you think that you can just let your Golden out in the yard to play by himself, think again! He will be standing at the door looking in at you waiting for you to join him. Did I mention that Goldens love being with their humans?!

Providing your Golden with plenty of exercise is a must! Putting aside 2 hours a day for physical activity is a good idea. Remember to not overdo it with puppies. A puppy needs only 5 minutes of exercise per month they are alive, twice a day. This means that a 3-month-old puppy can go for a 15-minute walk twice a day, and this should not replace their playtime.

Golden Retrievers belong to the sporting group of dogs and were developed as hunting dogs. These dogs were bred to work, and they need to keep active in order to stay happy.

If you enjoy the outdoors, then this breed is for you. A Golden Retriever will be happy to be your jogging partner, go hiking with you, enjoy nature walks, and go swimming.

Meeting the exercise needs of a Golden is extremely important. It keeps them healthy, happier and calmer. A Golden that doesnt get enough daily exercise will have pent-up energy that will be released in other ways, such as destructive behaviour.
