If the crate is significantly larger than your pup then be sure to block off part of the crate so your puppy cant pee on one side and sleep on the other. Here are some tips on where to start with puppy crate training.
Long-Term Confinement Area:;If you need to leave your puppy alone longer than they can be crated, set up a long-term puppy zone with an appropriate potty area using pee pads or dog litter box. Learn how to set up your puppy’s confinement area here.
Umbilical Cord Leash:;Use a hands-free leash to keep your puppy attached to you so they can’t wander off and have an accident. Keeping them close helps you notice when they are giving signals they need to go outside to potty.
Potty bell:Hang a bell by the door as an extra way for your dog to communicate that he needs to go out. You can teach your dog to ring the bell by holding it close to your dogs nose until your pup bumps it. When the bell jingles, open the door and take your dog out. What are the components of making sure biological needs are met?
First, is ensuring your pup has proper nutrition. Nutrition affects behavior just like it does with humans. Imagine eating cheeseburgers and fries for every mealeventually, youd feel pretty crappy right? Same with our pups if youre feeding low quality kibble every day, this can influence their behavior.
Second, ensure your golden retriever is receiving age-appropriate exercise. Keep in mind, puppies do not have their growth plates fully set in so its important we dont OVER exercise your pup. If youre unsure what is appropriate, this is a great conversation to have with your vet. As an adult, your golden will need a LOT of exercise, so you can play fetch on a long line leash, plan play dates with your friends dogs, or even go on a hike.;
