How To Trim Your Golden Retriever Puppys Claws

LIFE WITH A GOLDEN RETRIEVER // tips for getting a puppy living in an apartment is my dog vegan?

The day has finally come. Today, were clipping your puppys claws.

Before you start, heres a couple of important things you need to know:

  • In order for this to work, your puppy should be comfortable around the nail clippers. If you see them struggle, go back to the exercise from 2 weeks ago and have a go at it again.
  • This one is quite important. Dog claws have a vein running through them this is called the quick. You dont want to cut out puppys claws too short as we will nick the quick and this will bleed. And it looks scary and you wont want to do it again.
  • If your puppy has black claws and you are worried about the quick ask your vet or groomer to show you how to cut them.;

How to do it

  • Pick up your puppys paw as you did before, and check the claw. Give them a treat!
  • Pick up their paw again , and slide the nail clippers right on the edge of the claw. Clip just the very tip off so that you dont nick the quick.
  • Give your puppy a treat! Theyre going great.
  • Take a break for a few minutes youll need it too to bring your heart rate down.
  • Continue as above, giving your puppy a break after every claw.;

    Raising A Golden Retriever Puppy Setting Up

    Before your puppy comes home, you should work to set up everything that theyll need. Its much easier to do this before you have an excited puppy running around your feet at every turn.

    Three of the most important things to set up are your crate, your puppy zone, and any baby gates that youve bought.

    Make sure your puppys crate is big enough for him to turn around in, and sleep comfortably in. But, remember that if its much bigger than this, your Golden may try to use one end as a bed and the other as a toilet.

    If your crate is too big when your puppy comes home, you can use a crate divider to create a smaller bedroom area.

    A puppy zone is an area in your house that is puppy proof. It usually contains your puppys crate, some toys, and fresh water. You may choose to feed your puppy in their puppy zone too.

    Some people create a puppy zone within a playpen. But others like to dedicate an entire room, like the kitchen. If you want to do this, its best to use baby gates on the doors, so that you can get out easily without releasing your puppy.

    Some of our most popular blog posts are about how to potty training your puppy and how to crate train your puppy so its no wonder we receive a plethora of questions on these two subjects.

    Sure Colby, but what do those two subjects have to do with todays question: What do you do with your puppy when you work full time?

    Well Maam, let me tell you0ver the many years writing on the subject ofÂ;puppy pee and poopÂ;Ive received hundreds of questions about potty accidents in the crate and the majority of theseÂ;questions ended something like this:

    my puppy can hold it for 8-10 hours at night. I work a full time job and I leave my puppy in the crate forÂ;only about 6-8 hours a day and every time I come home my puppy has peed and pooped in hisÂ;crate. What am I doing wrong?CD

    TIP OF THE DAY:Â;If your puppy has an accident in crate, on the carpet, or anywhere in the house make sure you use an enzymatic cleaner like Rocco & Roxie Stain and Odor Eliminator. If you dont completely remove the odor your puppy will be tempted to potty in the same spot again and again

    Okay, let me give you a quick answer to the above question: You should neverÂ;leave your puppy in the crate all day!

    When we first bring home our 8 week old puppies we do not crate them for more than 1-2 hours during the day.

    • Ever learn how to potty train a puppy on pads? Well, now you will! Pads are great because theyre easy to move around, pick up, and take with you when youre on the go. All you need to do is place the pad ideally near the door. This will be really beneficial as your puppy starts getting older as he will naturally head towards the door when he needs to go out. If you see your puppy beginning to eliminate inside, quickly pick him up and move him onto the pad.;

    • Come up with a puppy potty training schedule: While you may have gotten so comfortable with potty training with pads that you want to keep the pads around and dont want to go out, having a puppy potty training schedule will be beneficial for both you and your pup, instilling consistent habits at a young age. When you have a young pup, try to take them out as much as possible. Some ideal times include in the morning when they first wake up, after breakfast before you have to head out, at lunchtime, after you finish work, after dinner, and before bed. Its up to you to decide what works best for your schedule. As your puppy gets older, you can slowly decrease the trips outside.

    A good rule-of-paw is a puppy can only hold its bladder for one hour per month-of-age.

    Can You Raise A Golden Retriever In An Apartment

    Is it possible to raise a golden retriever in an apartment? The short answer is yes, it is possible as long as youre doing these 4 things. I break it down in the video below .

    To be honest, there are SO many people who have a YARD and dont give their pup these four basic things, because they think the yard will take care of it.

    This is why Ive found that many people who raise bigger dogs in apartments have more mentally healthy dogs because they make a mindful decision to ensure their golden retrievers needs are met. So lets get into what these four things are!

    BIOLOGICAL NEEDS ARE MET

    What are the components of making sure biological needs are met?

    First, is ensuring your pup has proper nutrition. Nutrition affects behavior just like it does with humans. Imagine eating cheeseburgers and fries for every mealeventually, youd feel pretty crappy right? Same with our pups if youre feeding low quality kibble every day, this can influence their behavior.

    Second, ensure your golden retriever is receiving age-appropriate exercise. Keep in mind, puppies do not have their growth plates fully set in so its important we dont OVER exercise your pup. If youre unsure what is appropriate, this is a great conversation to have with your vet. As an adult, your golden will need a LOT of exercise, so you can play fetch on a long line leash, plan play dates with your friends dogs, or even go on a hike.;
