Mistakes When Teaching Your Puppy To Come

Training 9 Week old Golden Retriever Puppies with Positive Reinforcement

Here are some of the common mistakes people make when teaching the recall command to their puppy.

Challenging them too much, too early

You want your puppy to always come to you when you ask, and every time they disobey you, they start to learn that they dont always have to come when you call.

To stop that from happening, make sure theyre on a leash until they come to you 100% of the time you ask, and dont ask them to come in situations that are too distracting for them, like at a park, or if a distracting dog or human is around.

Another thing to consider here is that young puppies will love coming to you because theyre like little kids that just want to be close to their mom and dad.

However, when they become teenage puppies many show signs of becoming independent rebels and may find it more fun to run away from you than to run to you.

During these times, dont expect too much and continue to practice the basics and set them up for success.

Punishing them for not coming

If your puppy doesnt come, you dont yell at them, or yank on the leash to get them to come.

Instead, you need to figure out a way to make them want to come to you.

Maybe thats going to a less-distracting environment and practicing more there, or getting a more delicious treat to lure them to you, or squeaking a toy they really love.

Punishing them after they come to you

The name of the game here is getting your dog to love coming to you.

Choose Your Training Method And Stick To It

There are a couple of different training methods you can go with. The most common is voice commands. With this method, you’ll need to create identifiable words or phrases that you will teach your dog to remember.

Plan these commands out and write them down. Changing commands in the middle of training will only confuse your puppy and set the process back.

Another method is to use an object that produces a sound. Whistle training and click training work on the same principles as training with voice commands. However, instead of saying commands, you use the device.

Golden Retrievers are very responsive to whistle training. Whistles produce a distinct sound that can be heard from a good distance away. Though, if you choose to use a dog whistle or clicker, you’ll need to create your sound patterns and invest in a solid device that can last for many years.

Crate Training Is The Best Puppy Potty Training Method

Potty training a puppy is one of the biggest concerns for new puppy owners. Golden Retrievers are bright, easily trained dogs and learn to use the outdoors for bathroom needs very quickly. Crate training is the fastest, most efficient way to housebreak a Golden Retriever puppy.

Puppies, by nature, will not defecate or urinate in their sleeping area. While there is a very rare pup that will defy this rule, nearly every dog will refrain from soiling their bedding area. Crate training is a tool to achieve a potty trained puppy and is based on the dog’s instinctive need to keep their bed area clean.

An appropriately sized crate serves as the puppy’s bed, and the dog is placed in the crate when the rest of the family cannot supervise it. The puppy will not soil the crate as long as certain rules are followed . When the puppy is taken outside after each period in the crate, he will go to the bathroom in the appropriate location. After a short period of time, the dog learns that the house is not a bathroom and that the backyard is the appropriate location to do his business!

Puppies should be placed in their crates at night for the first year: after that period of time, accidents are extremely unlikely. Most dogs will potty train in a very short period of time and become reliably housebroken after a month of crate training.

Puppies Should Avoid Full Flights Of Stars

9 weeks old

Your Summer Brook puppy will be trained shortly before changing homes to safely navigate a set of 3 or 4 steps. If your set of steps is more than half a full flight, we require that you carry him up them until he is 4 months old. Even after this, we recommend keeping him off the steps as often as possible. Dogs tend to get excited and fly down them, often leaping over 4 or 5 of them at a time. This can result in injury. As with so many other repetitive or impactful activities, we highly recommend waiting until growth plates are closed. Baby gates can be a huge help until that time.

Golden Retriever Puppy Exercise Limits

Golden Retrievers are an obedient breed that enjoys being active. That is why they became great companions when retrieving the waterfowl their owners had killed. These dogs are also great for playing with children. When given the proper training, a Golden Retriever puppy can grow up to be the perfect house dog.

What are the Golden Retriever puppy exercise limits?A good rule of thumb is that puppies require 5 minutes of exercise per month they are alive, twice a day. So, a three-month-old puppy should get 15 minutes of exercise twice a day This is in addition to their regular play and not in place of it. Too much exercise can damage the puppys growth plates.

With Golden Retrievers being a high energy breed, when they dont get the proper exercise they need, it can lead to a variety of health issues, hyperactivity, and behavioral problems. Here is what you need to know to make sure your puppy has the proper exercise to become a strong adult.

Who Should Use Umbilical

If you like constant-supervision training, but want the added security of not losing track of your pup, umbilical-cord training may be a better option. Again, you must be able to keep your puppy with you wherever you go during the day.

You must also be physically able to restrain the puppy on the leash if he pulls after spotting your neighbors cat.

Who Should Use Crate Training

Crate training is best for you if you need some time where you dont supervise your puppy, but also are available to let him out often.

If you work for long hours outside of the home, you will have to either have someone else let your puppy out during the day, or utilize the paper-training method so your puppy isnt expected to wait a long time between breaks.

Pros Of Crate Training

9 Week Old Golden Retriever Puppy Learns Down and Take It
  • Crate training utilizes your puppys wild genetics to not eliminate where he sleeps. Using this ingrained instinct to your favor, you dont have to reinvent the wheel.
  • Crate training gives you a break. You dont have to watch your puppy when he is in the crate. So go take that bubble bath without fear of an accident!
  • The crate has the added benefit of keeping your puppy from other trouble when youre unable to watch them, such as eating your houseplants.
  • Crate training means no indoor messes to clean up, and no indoor potty smells to trigger repeat performances after being attracted by the scent.

What Supplies Do You Need

If you are serious about training golden retriever puppies, you may need some supplies in addition to the time spent. These are listed below:

  • Crate: If you want to crate training with your puppy, you will obviously need a crate. It is very important that this training equipment is at your house from day one. You can choose a soft dog crate or a heavy duty dog crate.
  • Baby gates: You dont have to get these, but they are useful. These tools prevent problematic situations when you cant pay proper attention to your puppy.
  • Leashes: There are indoor and outdoor leashes. You can choose them according to your goals.
  • High-quality food: Consult your breeder or veterinarian about the appropriate food. If for some reason you need a change in the food field, pay attention to the gradation.
  • Toys: Golden Retriever puppies have a lot of energy. You might want to buy them some chew toys.
  • Bedding: If you buy a crate for your puppy, you need to have some bedding in it for convenience. Anyway, there are crates that come with something like this.
  • Treats: These will be very useful during the training. Use them wisely and not excessively.
  • Collar: If you get used to your Golden Retriever with a collar from day one, it will be beneficial later on.
  • Brushes: This is one of the most important grooming tools. This will help keep your dogs coat healthy which is extra important for golden retrievers.

Potty Training A 9 Week Old Puppy

Training Our Puppy! // 9 Week Old Golden Retriever

Nine weeks is often the point at which people start to worry about potty training progress, or rather, lack of it. Perhaps you are taking your Labrador puppy outside after every meal, and every time he wakes up, but he is still making puddles all over the house. So what is going on? Nine week old pups have very poor bladder control, and short memories.

He is still very much a baby and will need your help in this department for some time to come. Your role is to restrict his access to areas where mistakes are most likely to happen, through the use of baby gates or some other kind of temporary barrier.

You will also need to take him outside before his bladder is over flowing and to generally ensure that every wee goes in the right place. Check out our complete guide to potty training for more information.

Potty Breaks In Specific Areas

Youll probably finds the job to be a whole lot easier if you can get your dog to go in the same place every time. To give you an idea of where to choose for your puppy to take potty breaks, I recommend you look for a spot that is away from doors, windows, pathways, and play areas.

It also needs to be a place thats easy to clean, get to and away from the center of a room . Just make sure that you dont forget to clean it up, as theres nothing worse than leftovers getting leftover!

An Active Puppy Will Pee More Often

Some owners get frustrated by their pups seeming ability to hold their pee at night when theyre asleep for 8 hours or more, when they pee every 30 minutes when theyre awake!

This is natural, though. A sleeping puppys metabolism slows right down, so they dont produce as much urine as they do when theyre awake.

Dont forget, playing with your puppy is thirsty work for everyone! So your little one will also be drinking more when awake.

Why Do We Go Through The Effort Of Crate Training A Puppy

Because without first going through a crate training process, if you tried to crate your puppy they will almost certainly be afraid, feel isolated and fear the crate instead of love it.

Many people say their dog loves being in their crate when in fact this isnt nearly always true.

Until you can ask your dog to go the crate, they do so happily and when they get there they look truly happy to get inside and relax, play with a toy, and never cry to get out even with the door closed, then crate training is something you need to spend time on.

And until you have fully crate trained your puppy, you will not be able to take advantage of the many benefits it offers to both you and your puppy. Such as:

  • Providing a place of their own for comfort and security
  • Speeding up the house training process
  • Keeping your puppy safe when you cannot supervise them
  • Protecting your possessions when you cannot supervise your puppy
  • Preparing your puppy for time crated at the vets or boarding kennels
  • And much more besides!

QUICK RECOMMENDATION: Another tool we love for house training is the dog potty doorbell called the Smart Bell. It takes a little bit of training, the Smart Bell alerts you when your puppy has to potty and its also great when working on the cue Touch.

Golden Retriever Personality Traits

While Golden Retrievers dont have a high prey-drive because theyre hypersensitive to sensory input and stimulation as a whole, they can often be extremely excitable. Owners rave that their Goldens remain a puppy well into adulthood because that enthusiasm never wanes, and sometimes its one of their most coveted characteristics.

Other times not so much, as this excitably can become problematic when it seemingly has no end. The first time this is usually encountered is when training a puppy to comfortably walk on a leash. It usually takes a bit longer than usual to leash-train a Golden Retriever.

Lastly, when it comes to dogs as popular as the Golden Retriever, its incredibly important to thoroughly research the breeder youre purchasing your puppy from. The more demand for a breed, the larger the chance irresponsible breeders and puppy mills stress more importance on quantity than quality. If your dog is a product of irresponsible breeding, no amount of training is going to change their propensity to demonstrate poor characteristics.

With that being said, these are simply things to be aware of in the training process, and not points to dissuade you from purchasing a Golden Retriever. Theres a reason theyre Americas #3 dog, and thats because by in large theyre fantastic companions, lovable home bodies, and have astounding temperaments.
