Are Golden Retrievers Long Haired

Asked by: Nicole Kohler I

Golden retrievers have an instinctive love of water, and are easy to train to basic or advanced obedience standards. They are a long-coated breed, with a dense inner coat that provides them with adequate warmth in the outdoors, and an outer coat that lies flat against their bodies and repels water.

Why Do Some Golden Retrievers Have Short Hair

Golden retrievers with short hair are not an officially recognized breed by the American Kennel Club because this breed is known for its long hair.

There are a couple of reasons that may result in short hair, leading to the discovery that the golden retriever is not entirely pure or that there is some genetic variation that is specific to the dog.

Provide A Proper Diet For Hair Growth

For a healthy, glowing coat, add Omega -3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to your dogs food if not already included. These beneficial Omega acids can be in fish oil, coconut oil, and olive oil, or through additional vitamin supplements found to be good for Golden Retrievers. They help your dogs coat to maintain length and a natural sheen.

You may add a teaspoon of any of the above oils to your dogs food or supplement with some fish. Also, beef bones containing bone marrow are excellent for healthy skin.

Remember to clear this with your vet if your dog has allergies that would prevent him from consuming any of the recommended foods and supplements.

Considerations For Pet Parents

Top 10 reasons why we love having a dog

Golden Retrievers make great family dogs due to their jovial and friendly disposition. They have moderately high energy, so a daily exercise routine is needed. Their heightened energy level and size means that you should keep a close eye on them around young children or fragile individuals, to prevent your dog from knocking them over. Its also important to train them early about what are and are not appropriate things to eatthis may mean preventing access to things like garbage cans, laundry, and house supplies.

However, Golden Retrievers do have a lot of predispositions for illnesses. This means that regular vet visits and additional vet costs will be common while caring for a Golden Retriever. They also have a thick, long coat that is prone to matting, so consistent grooming and brushing are necessary to keep the coat healthy and manage their shedding.

Are Golden Retrievers Hair Or Fur

As their name suggests, Golden Retrievers have golden or yellow fur that comes in a range of shades. They also have a thick undercoat and a dense, water-repellent outer layer that can be wavy or straight. Typically, they have feathery hair on the back of their front legs and along their chest, back, thighs, and tail.

What Is The Rarest Color Of Golden Retriever

Red Golden Retrievers are somewhat rare, though not impossible to find. We should also note that âredâ is an umbrella term. In reality, red Goldens are shades of mahogany, amber, red-gold, and dark brown. Depending on the intensity of your Golden’s fiery coat, they might get mistaken for an Irish Setter.

Priority Health Schemes And Tests

The Kennel Club’s Assured Breeders must use the following schemes, tests and advice. All other breeders are strongly advised to also use these.

Type Of Golden Retriever

Golden retriever coat stages | Do golden retriever shed ?

Many people dont know this but Golden retrievers come in eight varieties. Some are long-haired while others are short-haired.

The common short-haired variety includes field-bred golden retrievers. Bred to work in the field and hunt, this type has relatively short hair than his counterparts.

Theres another type called companion Goldens who are also known to have short coats.

All this is to say that maybe your dog isnt meant to have a big fluff just since he is not long-haired in the first place.

First Signs Of Hair Growth On A Golden Retriever

While a Golden Retriever may be known for its beautiful flowing coat, Golden Retriever puppies are not initially born with this longer hair. It will take about 3 months before you begin to see the first signs of longer hair, usually on their tail.

From this stage on, a Golden puppy starts sprouting feathers . This growth marks a departure from puppy fluff and the beginning of the long, full coat characteristic of a mature Golden Retriever.

If your puppys parents took a longer time to grow their coat, your puppy would most likely follow his parents timeline. Under normal circumstances, the puppys short, fluffy coat lasts for three months, after which long hair begins to grow. However, the timing of this occurrence depends on your Golden puppys bloodline and heritage.

To get more information on your puppys lineage, contact the breeder, if possible. He will let you know how old your puppys parents were when they got their adult coats. This will help you estimate more accurately when your puppy might get his longer hair.

Golden Retrievers Growing Long Hair

The short, fluffy coat of golden retriever puppies lasts for around 3 months. Depending on the puppys bloodline and heritage, the coat can begin to turn into long hair after this time. If the parents of the puppy took a longer time to grow the coat, the chances of the puppy taking a long time are increased. You should ask the breeder about the puppys heritage so that you have enough information to prepare for a loving golden retriever with long hair.

After 3 months of a fluffy puppy, you will begin to see some long hair that has started to grow on the tail of the puppy. This is the beginning of a process known as feathering. Golden retrievers with long hair start with feathers on their tails, their legs and under the stomach. It starts from the tail and travels up the body to the head in a gradual process. You will be able to notice the new hairs at once since they are darker than the light hair puppies usually have.

Most breeds shed the puppy fur, but golden retrievers do not. The longer adult hair begins to grow on top of the puppy hair and pushes this puppy hair aside. The puppy hair turns into the dogs undercoat as a second layer to the fur. With time, the undercoat begins to grow thicker as the longer outer coat also grows in. This whole process takes around 18 months to develop until you have a gorgeous golden retriever with long hair.

Goldens Are Hailed As Super Heroes

Golden retrievers are fiercely loyal to their families, so it’s no surprise that there are countless stories of goldens protecting or rescuing their people from dangerous situations.

Todd, the sweet golden pictured here, is one of those puppy heroes. In June 2018, Todd went on a hike with his owner, Paula, on a trail near Anthem, Arizona. During their hike, Paula nearly stepped on a rattlesnakeand when the snake lunged at her, Todd jumped in front of her to protect her. Although Todd was bitten on the nose and had severe swelling in his face, he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Because of his heroic deed, the internet has hailed Todd as a very, very good boy. And believe it or not, Todd has found a way to be an even better boy: He has a GoFundMe page to help other heroic doggies who have suffered from the same injuries.

Bathing A Golden Retriever With Long Hair

Use warm water to bathe your golden retriever with long hair. Make sure that you invest in a good-quality dog shampoo so that it doesnt irritate the dog. It will also make its fur shinier and healthier. You can also bathe the dog after trimming it so that all the loose hair is washed away. If the puppy is especially dirty or smelly, it then bathing it becomes all the more necessary.

A regular bathing schedule can also reduce shedding and keep the fur coat shiny. However, its also perfectly fine if owners bathe their golden retrievers with long hair only when they get dirty.

Rinse the body of the dog carefully so that every part of the thick coat is soaked thoroughly. Begin working in the lather of the shampoo from the tip to the tail of the dog. Wash it off to make sure that you dont leave any shampoo in the fur since that can increase matting. Use a towel to dry off the dog or blow dry for show-worthy results. If you use the latter option, make sure to keep the heat low.

Comb or brush the fur one time before starting the trimming process to straighten the fur so that it is easier to cut. You can even use an undercoat comb so that no fur is left matted.

    Collaring Your Golden Retriever

It is important to learn how to collar your Golden Retriever to avoid matting. We recommend using an inch-wide collar for your long-haired Golden Retriever, as using a wider collar could lead to matting, and using a narrower one can cause skin irritation, asphyxiation, and hair loss.

Also, while this breed is great in search and rescue operations, they can be just as clumsy and may still go missing. This is why a GPS tracking collar such as Fi is ideal, as it provides 24/7 location as well as activity tracking to find their Golden Retrievers if they ever go missing.

The medical issues listed below are some of the most common health issues that Golden Retrievers are predisposed to, but this list is not all-inclusive.

    The Golden Retrievers Coat

While some Golden Retrievers have shorter hair than others, the majority have a dense and lustrous coat of hair that needs to be well taken care of. Knowledge about their coat from pup to adulthood can help you better care for your Golden Retriever.

As puppies, they are born with soft and fluffy hair coats which help to keep them warm. This hair begins to change as they grow, starting from the tail. The new growth is darker and coarser, pushing the soft and fluffy hair aside so that it forms an undercoat this is what makes them double-coated. The new growth called guard hairs starts at around three months and lasts until they are about eighteen months old.

How Do I Make My Golden Retriever Fluffy

To grow a healthy, glowing coat, Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are vital. Natural sources of these essential fatty acids include vegetable oils such as coconut oil or olive oil, and fish oil. To encourage a shinier coat, try adding a teaspoon of oil to your dog’s food, or supplement with a bit of fish.

Even though they’re called golden retrievers, not all goldens have a yellow-gold coat. They can range from a very light, snowy white, to a yellow-gold, to a dark, coppery red.

No matter the color of their coat, however, it’s important to never cut your golden retriever’s hairdoing so can put her at risk of skin cancer, among other health issues. Their coats are made up of two layersthe long, silky, waterproof outercoat and soft, warming undercoatand act as insulators against all types of weather.
