Signs And Symptoms Of Lymphoma:
Often the dog with lymphoma will present with swollen lymph glands somewhere. Early warning signs to look for are: weight loss, disinterest in food, vomiting, fever, and depression. In some cases, there will be additional signs of increased thirst and urination, and an erratic pulse.
There is also a blood test that can be performed that is highly accurate in detecting lymphoma. This test needs just 1ml of blood and involves multiple bio-marker technology, which is used for detecting cancers in humans. This blood test has been developed by Pet Screen, and does not involve sedating your pooch. Your local vet should be able to provide you with more information.
Want A Cute Puppy But Dont Want A Big Dog
Golden Retriever puppies are like the Gerber babies of dogs the super cute, fuzzy face that pops into peoples heads when they hear the word puppy.
Theres no problem wanting a young pup what is a problem is taking your pup to a shelter and abandoning him the moment he becomes too big. Plan ahead: all dogs will grow, and there are several totally unselfish reasons not to adopt a big dog. Big dogs need space. They need more food, more exercise, and on average tend to cost more to care for but have shorter life spans than smaller dogs. If you want your cute puppy to stay small
Consider: a Pomeranian
All puppies are adorable, but some have features that make them score higher for cuteness. Pomeranian pups are adorable little balls of fluff. When they grow, they become bigger balls of fluff, but still weigh only about 5 pounds. Like Golden Retrievers, they are playful and energetic, but they dont require nearly so much exercise. They also share a double-coat with Goldens, so we hope youre a fan of brushing.
Note: Pomeranians are a popular breed for backyard breeders. Though some breeds might be harder to find in shelters, theyre out there! We encourage you to adopt and consider seniors, too!
Golden Retriever Vs German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is bigger than a Golden Retriever. GSDs can grow up to 26 inches tall and can weigh up to 90 pounds .
Their wolfish look, coupled with their erect ears and low back, give them an intimidating appearance. But they also have thick coats which require as much grooming as Goldens.
German Shepherds are sharp creatures that rank as the 3rd most intelligent breed. This fido is a true working dog, and theyre more motivated by physical activity than treats.
Though theyre highly energetic, theyre one of the large dogs suitable for novice owners. So if youre looking for a guard dog that doubles as a family pet, the GSD fits the job.
Proper training is crucial, though, as they may become overprotective.

Golden Retriever Summer Cut A Complete Guide
As dog owners, were all aware that most dog breeds dont deal with heat particularly well especially those with long coats, such as the Golden Retriever. However, before contacting your local dog grooming salon or getting out the scissors yourself, its imperative that youre aware of precisely what you should and shouldnt do when giving your golden retriever a summer cut.
Golden retrievers have a significant amount of hair. Although that is a very obvious trait to point out, it is actually this fact that leads some golden retriever owners to consider one thing they should never do: shave their dog. It may seem like an ingenious idea to remove the vast majority of your four-legged friends coat, but in reality, this isnt a good idea. Humans might opt for a shorter trim to make the baking heat of the summer months more bearable, but the same wisdom shouldnt be applied to a dogs coat. Before we discuss why shaving a dogs coat for summer isnt a wise idea, lets take a look at the Golden Retrievers coat in a little more depth.
Given the characteristics of the coat, golden retrievers do require a lot of care and attention to ensure their coat is kept in tip-top condition. This breed commonly sheds twice per year in spring and fall, but they will shed throughout the year, albeit to a lesser extent.
Now weve taken a more detailed look at the coat of the Golden Retriever, lets discuss some tips and advice regarding grooming in the summer months.

Feeding A Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers love to eat and are more active than other dogs. Its safe to say that they are part of the clean platter club, as they wont leave any leftovers. The Golden is a foodie, so you need to consider how much this will set you back before you bring your dog home.
It is important that dogs are fed high-quality food. This is how to tell whether you are buying high-quality food. What a Golden Retriever eats is dependent on their gender, age and activity level. A typical adult will consume between 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 cups of food per day. Your vet can help you determine the exact requirements of your dog.
The average cost of quality dog food is between $2-$3 per kilogram. You can buy a 30 pound bag for $55. Its roughly 120 cups of dogfood. The bag can provide 40 days of food if an adult Golden consumes three cups daily. A 30-pound bag would provide enough food for approximately a month at $55 each.
Pros & Cons: Who Should Get A Golden Retriever
Their playful personality and gentle nature make Golden Retrievers the perfect family pet, especially for active families.
However, they do shed quite a bit and require a fair amount of exercise. If you have a relaxed lifestyle or are often away from home, this may not be the breed for you. Theyre also prone to a few hereditary issues.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not Rare
English Cream goldens are rather common across the world and are becoming more common in America.
Dont let fancy names like, Rare White European Golden Retrievers, or, Exquisite Platinum Imported Golden Retrievers make you think that they are more rare or valuable than they are .
If a breeder is selling you on the fact that their dogs are rare, run away.
If theyre talking about how their dogs are healthy family dogs with good temperaments, then youre probably on the right track.
As far as how popular each color is, we did a study and asked 600 golden retriever owners what color their dog is.
Heres what they said:
Light gold : 31.5%
As you can see, light gold, or cream-colored, golden retrievers are the second-most common color after gold.
What Should I Feed My Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers should be fed a high-quality dog food thats appropriate for their age. Your veterinarian can offer recommendations and advise you on a healthy feeding schedule. Be careful not to overfeed your Golden Retriever. Use a measuring cup to make sure youre providing the right amount of kibble, and dont go overboard on treats, which can be high in calories.
Its important to help your Golden Retriever maintain a healthy weight to avoid problems like joint pain, heart disease, and liver and kidney issues. Like other large breeds, theyre also prone to conditions like hip dysplasia and arthritis, which can become more painful if theyre carrying extra pounds.

How Much Do Cream Golden Retrievers Cost
Golden retrieversno matter their colorcost anywhere between $500 to $2,500, depending on the location, the reputation of the breeder, and whether the puppy descends from champion lines.
If you adopt a golden retriever puppy with no health clearances or lineage documents, expect to pay around $500 or less. Anything above this range is a rip-off.
Depending on how reputable the pet store is and how well the puppy has been bred, the price can range anywhere from $500 to $1000.
The cost of a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder will set you back $1,500 to $2,500. Dogs descending from champion blood lines will be on the higher end of this price spectrum.
It is a huge red flag when a breeder tries to advertise their golden retriever puppies as “white,””cream,” or “rare.” A reputable breeder will not advertise color, but rather health and bloodline.

Your Kids Want A Golden Retriever But Need A More Low
At some point its likely that your children will ask you for a dog. Even if you already have a house full of pets, most kids have a the more the merrier mentality!
Your kids know the answers to all the old questions: are you going to walk him? Yes. Are you going to feed him every day and play with him? Yes. Are you going to pick up his poops? Yes.
Will your kids follow through? No? Maybe a Golden Retriever isnt the right pup.
A Golden Retriever will absolutely love your kids. They will snuggle them spend time with them, but if your children will skip play time with your pup in favor of their favorite TV show or toys, you may want a dog thats a little more low maintenance.
Consider: a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
If your kids have seen Lady and the Tramp, this breed is probably already a winner with them.
Furthermore, theyre GREAT with kids. Patient. Friendly. Gentle. Playful. Up for anything.
Want a star athlete thatll pal around in the yard with your children? Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Want a calm cuddle buddy to snuggle with your sleepy toddler? Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Want someone well-behaved to take to grown-up brunch because youre sick of Chuck E. Cheese? Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
If your kids forget the promises they made about cleaning up, brushing, and exercising their new pup, itll be easy enough for you to pick up the slack and your Cavalier will have no hard feelings about it.
Grooming Needs Of Golden Retrievers
Golden Retrievers have a double coat, meaning two layers of fur. The top layer is soft and long, while the underlayer is thick and dense. Double coats mean more shedding.
In the colder months, your Retrievers fur will thicken. The undercoat will keep your dog warm in cold weather, but this hair will fall out when the weather turns warm.
Be prepared for heavy shedding in the spring to early summer. Having a good grooming routine can reduce the amount of stray hair that will accumulate around your home, furniture, and clothing.

How Much Exercise Do They Need
Golden Retrievers are energetic dogs who need plenty of exercise to help them stay in shape. An active lifestyle can also help prevent stress, frustration, and boredom, which can result in bad behaviors like chewing up your favorite shoes or damaging the furniture.
Your veterinarian can tell you how much exercise is right for your dog, but a good rule of thumb for Golden Retrievers is to get them moving for at least 30 minutes two times a day. That should tire out your four-legged friend. If its too hot for a walk, you can take your Golden Retriever for a swim. These dogs were bred to fetch birds from the water and tend to enjoy a nice dip in a lake or pool.
Nutrition & Coat Health
Okay, this isnt technically a grooming essential, but it isessential to a healthy golden coat. Without the proper nutrition, your Golden can experience excessive shedding, which can be a scary thing.
According to Roy Cruzen DVM, the number one reason for excessive shedding in dogs is a poor diet, or rather, a lack of essential nutrients. He says that most of the cheap dog food products barely meets the minimal requirements.
Some owners even opt to give extra nutritional supplements for their dogs. And one of the best for Golden Retrievers is salmon oil. This super fish oil will help keep the golden coat soft and smooth.
Other than a shiny coat, there are many more benefits to fish oil. Some of which, include better joints, healthier heart, better skin and a stronger immune system.
While there are proven benefits to this supplement, you should be aware of the potential negative side effects. As long as youre aware, the good far outweighs the bad. However, Id still consult with a vet prior to introducing any extra supplements into their diets.

Pro Tips For Controlling Seasonal Shedding
There are a lot of surprisingly simple things you can do to stay on top of the shedding situation. I found that by poking around in a few Golden Retriever forums, you can find years and years of experienced breed owners sharing their valuable secrets and wisdom.
Here are a few of the fur fighting tips Ive learned from longtime owners of Golden Retrievers:
You cant beat the wisdom of people who have cared for and loved Goldens for decades.
What To Expect From All Varieties
No matter which variety you choose, all golden retrievers have similar temperaments. And despite their physical differences, each variety is easy to house train and eager to please, which makes this breed a great choice if you are a novice owner.
In general, you can expect a dog that is:
That being said, when you think of a golden retriever, you likely think of an American or a British variety. This is because of the long wavy coats that are characteristic of the breed.
Keep in mind, while goldens make amazing companions and loving pets to people of all ages, they are, foremost, working dogs. This means your golden will enjoy hunting or any type of work or water activities and require daily vigorous exercise.
The best way to keep your golden retrievers energy in check is to keep them occupied with regular exercise and play sessions. Activities such as jogging, cycling, hiking, swimming, running, or brisk walks are all great ways to keep your golden exercised and on best behavior.
Dont forget to keep your pooch mentally stimulated with puzzle toys, and make sure your golden has an array of different toys.
Since all golden retrievers were bred to retrieve downed game, they are naturally mouthy and have a strong urge to carry something in their mouth. To prevent your pooch from taking a liking to your favorite shoes, make sure there are fun and interesting toys your dog can mouth instead.

They Tend To Be Very Clingy
Goldendoodles have long been known as the friendly types. It doesnt matter where they are or who they are with, they are easily affectionate and outgoing. This makes them an ideal choice for a family dog.
These breeds are very sociable so sociable that they tend to crumble if not given enough time and attention. When this happens, there is a possibility for them to develop behavioral problems that might affect the way they interact with people.
Golden Retriever Labrador Mix Health Problems
While mixed-breed dogs are generally healthier than their purebred counterparts, the Goldador is prone to certain health problems that affect Goldens and Labradors.
The most common health problems seen in this mix are:
- Hip dysplasia
- Progressive retinal atrophy
The best way to avoid these issues from arising is to get your Goldador puppy from a reputable breeder. Make sure to check if both parents have clearances from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for hips, elbows, heart, and thyroid. Additionally, ask the breeder to show you clearances from Canine Eye Registry Foundation showing that the eyes are healthy and normal.
This mix has an average life span of 10 to 15 years, so dont get one if you arent ready for a long-term commitment.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Take A Long Time To Mature
Golden retrievers, and larger breeds in general, mature slower than smaller breeds.
Although golden retrievers may look like adults around one-year-old, mentally theyll still act like crazy, stubborn puppies until theyre about two or three.
These teenage years for dogs can be some of the toughest times for dog owners, but know that this is totally normal and will soon pass.
That being said, a lot of people say that golden retrievers are like playful puppies for life, so expect to have a lot of fun with your golden throughout their lifetime.

Do You Prefer A Puppy To An Older Dog
Dont think that Golden Retriever puppies or adults are equal in price. Younger Goldens tend to have a higher starting price. This holds true whether you adopt or get your dog through a breeder.
Golden Retrievers that are older tend to be less expensive than puppies in the beginning. They also tend to have a lower lifetime cost. The first year of ownership for your Golden Retriever puppy is going to cost you between $2100-3000. For the same period, an adult Golden will cost between $1500 to 2500.
Why the difference? Puppies need to be taught obedience, have regular vet visits and are given a lot of toys and pads for teething. For older Golden Retrievers, this is not an issue.

The Akc Does Recognize Cream
The Golden Retriever Breed Standard Illustrated
Many people think that the AKC doesnt recognize English Cream golden retrievers.
English Cream goldens are still golden retrievers, just with a fancy name and typically light coloring.
Here is what the AKC Breed Standard has to say about light golden retrievers: Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable.
Although it is undesirable, golden retrievers are golden retrievers, so if you have an English Cream golden, they can still be registered with the AKC as a golden retriever .
An interesting point here is that even though this light color is undesirable according to American Breed Standards, thats not the case with other countries.
Heres what the UK Breed Standard says about color: Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.
Heres what the Canadian Breed Standard says about color: Lustrous golden of various shades
And heres what the National Golden Retriever Council Australia says about color: Any shade of cream or gold but neither red or mahogany.
So although the American Breed Standard does not like the cream color, other countries are more accepting of it.
Puppy Old Golden Retriever 77 Days
If your 11-week-old puppy is not showing you all the trouble he can, he will. At 11 weeks old, he should consume approximately 2 cups per day. However, he might also eat as much as he can.
Make sure to sweep your floors regularly and to watch the puppy whenever hes outside. If your veterinarian is concerned that your dog ate something potentially dangerous, you should call them immediately.

What Is The Average Size Of A Golden Retriever
The AKC breed standard states that males are bigger than females. They can weigh anywhere from 60 to 80 pounds and are 22 to 24 inches tall.
Females measure at 55 to 70 pounds and have a height of 20 to 22 inches .
Its possible to get a dog that grows well beyond or under the average scope. Often, this is the runt of the litter.
A newborn Golden Retriever puppy should weigh 14 to 16 oz . They gain mass rather quickly and should grow 510% each week.
English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not From England
No, most English Cream goldens youll find in America are not from England.
Just like French fries are not from France.
All golden retrievers originated from Scotland in the mid-1800s when Lord Tweedmouth bred a Tweed water spaniel and a yellow wavy-coated retriever.
Most American breeders of these goldens either breed dogs from here in the States or import their dogs from all over the world, including:
- The Netherlands
So how did English Cream goldens get their misleading name?
According to Bev Brown, the Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club, were the first ones to write up the breed standard.
And in the early 1900s, all dog shows in Britain were held in England.
So in America, we called the champions of those dog shows, English Champions.
The English seems to have stuck with goldens that look like the English champions in those days, so 100 years later were calling them English Cream Golden Retrievers.

How Much Exercise Does She Need
She is pretty active and has fairly high needs when it comes to how much exercise and mental stimulation she needs each day. Ideally she needs a yard that is fenced in that she can play in. She needs a good brisk 30 minutes a day in terms of walking or jogging and then some play time too. She would love visits to the dog park, playing dog sports like flyball or agility, jogging with you and so on. She also loves swimming. Mental stimulation is equally important for her. Teach her tricks and include interactive toys for her to keep her mind busy. If she does not get enough of either she can become destructive out of boredom.
English Cream Golden Retrievers Eat A Lot
Theyre not small dogs, and they certainly dont have small appetites.
Oliver eats about 5 cups of food per day and goes through a 30 lb bag of dog food every 24 days.
Golden retrievers love eating , but because of this its important to monitor how much they eat.

Goldens Are Hailed As Super Heroes
Golden retrievers are fiercely loyal to their families, so it’s no surprise that there are countless stories of goldens protecting or rescuing their people from dangerous situations.
Todd, the sweet golden pictured here, is one of those puppy heroes. In June 2018, Todd went on a hike with his owner, Paula, on a trail near Anthem, Arizona. During their hike, Paula nearly stepped on a rattlesnakeand when the snake lunged at her, Todd jumped in front of her to protect her. Although Todd was bitten on the nose and had severe swelling in his face, he’s expected to make a full recovery.
Because of his heroic deed, the internet has hailed Todd as a very, very good boy. And believe it or not, Todd has found a way to be an even better boy: He has a GoFundMe page to help other heroic doggies who have suffered from the same injuries.
