The Most Popular Golden Retriever Treats

In the golden retriever survey, we asked people what their Goldens favorite treats are.

Heres what they said:

Theres a lot to unpack here

Like I mentioned earlier, most Goldens will happily eat anything, so you cant go wrong with the recommended treats in this article.

Chicken and cheese are listed here, which have both already been mentioned.

But what about peanut butter and Milk-Bones?

Peanut butter is fine in small amounts.

Its high in calories, has lots of sugar, and many peanut butter-flavored treats have a lot of flour in them.

None of these things are terrible in small amounts, but compared to real meat, its much less nutritious.

I use the treats mentioned earlier in this article for the most part, but Ill use peanut butter to cover the hole when I make frozen Kongs.

As for Milk-Bones

Remember what you want to avoid in treats?

Treats with long ingredient lists that are full of fillers, food coloring, and are highly processed

Heres the ingredient list for Milk-Bones :

Its long, the first two ingredients are fillers, and obviously all of these ingredients need to be highly processed to form a cute little bone.

So just because something is popular doesnt mean its healthy.

Be careful about what you give your pup and be sure to read the ingredients list.

Bully Sticks What Are They

Bully sticks exist in raw, dried, or cooked form. All bully sticks have a tough consistency, which is perfect for a long-lasting chew.

However, bully sticks can stink if theyre not prepared correctly. The unpleasant odor comes from the moisture. Therefore, drying, baking, and cooking them properly will help remove the odor. There can also be a risk of bacterial contamination sans correct preparation.

She is one of three vets who recommended the treats to us when we investigated CBD for dogs, with all of them saying ElleVet is the gold-standard brand in the space. The company conducted testing of its CBD chews with Cornell University, and the results showed 80 percent improvement in reducing pain and increasing mobility in dogs with severe joint issues. The treats come in 62-piece packages, and theyre available in two sizes/doses for small-breed dogs under 50 pounds and large-breed dogs over 50 pounds , both of which are peanut-butter flavored. Natural Dog Treats: Fruits And Vegetables

Many of the fruits and vegetables that humans eat are healthy and safe to give to your dog. Below are just a few safe options to share with your dog.

Blueberries

Blueberries are one of the best treats because they are small and dont have large pits that would pose a potential choking hazard. They can be served at room temperature or even frozen for a nice treat on a hot summer day, and they are an excellent source of antioxidants.

Bananas

Peeled bananas are also a sweet antioxidizing treat but have more natural sugars in them, so give these infrequently.

Apples

Apples are an excellent fiber source and can be given in small cut-up pieces, making sure to avoid the core and seeds.

Important

Be sure to avoid grapes and raisins which are toxic for dogs. The cause is unknown, but just one to three grapes can cause kidney failure in a dog.

Vegetables

Vegetables like greens beans and carrots are safe for dogs and are a great source of fiber. Because carrots are crunchy, they can also help keep your dogs teeth clean.

Leafy greens like kale are good sources of calcium, iron, and vitamins like A and C. These can be served chopped or steamed.

Peas and cooked sweet potatoes are also great dog treats and are common components of most commercial dog foods.

Important

Dog owners should avoid mushrooms because some are toxic, and vegetables from the Allium family like onions, chives, and garlic can cause severe health problems like vomiting, diarrhea, and anemia.

Hard Cheese Chews Yak Chews And Blocks

Aside from perhaps some lactose intolerance, cheese shouldnt pose too much of a problem for dogs, right? Well, when its been processed into a rock-hard block or bone it certainly can.

Cheese blocks and cheese bones, including yak cheese treats, can be much too hard for regular chewing and can lead to broken teeth for an unfortunate dog. In my own test, the Ecokind Yak Cheese Chews did not pass the “thumbnail test” .

If you want to give your dog cheese, stick to small amounts of the real stuff like string cheese. For a less stinky option in your treat pouch, opt for the freeze-dried cheese treats, which can make for a great high-value treat during training.

Available at:

If you still want to give your dog these hard cheese chews, you can attempt to warm them in the microwave to soften them. However, the brands I tried during my testing didn’t become any softer.

Natural Alternatives To Bully Sticks

If you are thinking twice about pizzle as a healthy snack for your canine companion, consider these alternative byproducts for natural dog treats and save some money at the same time.

  • Cows hooves are inexpensive and long-lasting. A word of caution, they can cause gastric upset in the form of gas.
  • Pigs ears and cows ears are dried chews that provide chondroitin as they are made predominantly of skin and cartilage.
  • Pig snouts are relatively expensive dried treats, but they also supply chondroitin in addition to protein.
  • Cow Trachea is also a significant source of chondroitin and is similar in texture to pizzle.
  • As with bully sticks, investigate how these products are raised and dried. Seek farms that eschew hormones and antibiotics and use oven drying methods to cure the treats.
  • Naturally, shed deer, moose, and elk antlers are free of bacteria and high in glucosamine and chondroitin. Long-lasting, often lasting many months, they are also the most expensive natural dog treat on the market.

ozzy’smom said:My 12 week old pup loves them. They are somewhat stinky but it’s the one thing I know that will occupy him when I need to few minutes to get something done and it seems to satisfy he’s chewing urge more than anything else. He’s not particularly interested in nylabones or a kong. We started with the short ones and then took them away when they’d get down to a few inches but after he swallowed a short end of one and I got sick of throwing away half of every stick we bought I just bought a 24 inch one. I try not to give them to him too often but for us they are a great treat. BTW, when we swallowed the short end I called the vet and she thought he’d be fine since they are digestable…and he was.

Great For Your Canines Dental Health And Stomach

Despite the hardness of bully sticks, theyre actually excellent for canine dental and oral health. When chewed, pizzle sticks cause abrasions on canine teeth, promoting the removal of plaque and tartar without scraping the gums.

As mentioned earlier, bully sticks dont cause stomachaches because theyre easily digestible. Many pet owners are generally aware of rawhide treats, as theyre popular in the market. However, some rawhide chews contain unnecessary additives that can contribute to difficult digestion.

Jax’s Mom said:Honestly, I flet safer giving them bully sticks when they were puppies. They couldn’t really EAT the darn thing. Took them a long time to get it down to a small piece before aai threw it out. Now that they are big, they go through it so fast, and end up chewing pieces off, which makes me nervous. Does anyone else have this problem?
