How Much To Feed Your Adult Golden Retriever
How much to feed your dog will depend on the type of food theyre eating and their size and health.
Talking to your veterinarian and reading the label can help you determine how much to feed them.
Its hard to say statements like, Adult golden retrievers need to eat 3 cups per day, because all goldens are different and all foods are different.
For example, one brand of food may have 300 calories per cup, while another brand may have 400 calories per cup.
And if a golden is overweight theyll need to eat fewer calories than one that is in great shape and runs around the yard for two hours each day.
Work with your veterinarian and monitor your dogs weight and energy levels to determine how much they should be eating.
What We Feed Our Golden
Oliver had a few different brands of food that he ate as a puppy.
First, we started him off on one of the brands listed in the graph above that is correlated with DCM.
Once we heard about the study we switched to another brand, although he didnt like that at all.
Then we switched to another brand that he just sort of liked.
If we were to have another puppy, we would definitely start with the Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy food.

Pros Of Raw Food Diet For Golden Retrievers
Less smelly poop
There is no debate about this poop from the kibble diet that really smells awful. On the other hand, poop from the raw food diet is smaller in quantity and doesnt have that appalling stench.
Fewer problems with anal glands
Anal gland problem is common in Golden Retrievers, and the dogs diet can be the direct cause of this issue. Two anal sacks are expressed when the passing poop puts pressure on them.
However, if the poop is not firm enough, it will pass without anal glands being expressed. This, in turn, can cause inflammation and all sorts of problems. When feeding your dog a raw diet, the bones it digests will form firm poop that will put enough pressure on the anal glands.
Of course, not all dogs that are fed a kibble diet will suffer from anal gland problems. Some Goldens that are fed a raw food diet will probably have that issue too. However, there is a strong correlation between a raw food diet is good for the health of the dogs anal glands.
Reduced risk of bloat
This potentially deadly condition is caused by the stomach rotation and the cutting off of the blood supply. Bloat needs to be treated immediately to save the dogs life. Studies have shown that certain types of kibble foods can cause bloat in Golden Retrievers.
Reduced risk of obesity
Shinier coats and increased energy levels
Natural Healthy Alternatives To The Raw Diet
When relying on a raw diet, owners take a risk of potentially giving their dog unbalanced nutrition. To be safe and responsible, consult with a vet before and during the process. Some alternatives have the same benefits of a raw food diet, as well as consistent nutritional content.
The first alternative is Freeze-Dried Raw Meat. This is meant to be used in combination with traditional kibble, as a way to supplement the dogs diet with real meat. Freeze-Dried Raw Meat usually contains up to 95 percent muscle meat, ground bone, and organ meat. The other 5 percent is made up of raw or lightly processed ingredients. As a bonus, freeze-dried raw meat has a significantly longer shelf life than average kibble. The average moisture content of freeze-dried meat is typically around 5 percent. This low moisture content prevents food from spoiling prematurely. Take note that this dog food is still raw.
Finally, there is fresh dog food. Like BARF food, fresh food is made with natural ingredients that promote a balanced and healthy diet in dogs, such as: such as beef, chicken, lamb, vegetables such as peas, spinach, carrots, and fruits such as blueberries, among others. The main difference between fresh food and the BARF diet is that fresh food is not raw, which reduces the potential risks of contamination with bacteria that are harmful to health and do not need to be frozen.

Golden Retriever Puppies A Golden Retriever puppy is surely one of the cutest puppies in the world. Youll have a hard time resisting one of these adorable pups if he wants something. Most Golden Retrievers are dead set on fetching, so be prepared for hours of fun as you toss balls and sticks for your new pup.
As far as how much to feed your Golden Retriever puppy, lets take a quick look at a Goldens average weight as he grows . Of course, these are only estimates. You should weigh your puppy often to see how s/he is growing. Your vet can also keep track of your puppys weight gain and growth when you take him or her in for vaccinations. Female puppies usually weight a little less than male puppies.
At 3 Months: 23 lbs
At 6 Months: 52 lbs
At 9 Months: 61 lbs
At 12 Months: 68 lbs
Considering these weights, and your Goldens size as an adult, we can figure how much you should be feeding your puppy. As mentioned earlier, we recommend feeding a large-breed puppy food for Golden Retriever puppies. As you can see, Goldens grow quickly as puppies. A good large-breed puppy food can provide the proper nutrition and keep your puppy from growing too fast. If your puppy grows too fast, or is too chubby, he is more likely to have problems with his hips or problems with arthritis later in life.

What You Need To Know About Raw Feeding Your Golden Retriever
Some people believe that commercial kibble is unfit for dogs because its processed and not fresh. Others believe that a dogs natural diet is carnivorous. In this case, people say humans basically turned dogs into omnivores with commercial diets including grains which arent healthy for dogs. Raw diets are an option that some owners choose, but they can be expensive and time consuming to prepare. One raw diet that many owners follow is BARF, the Biologically Approved Raw Food diet, which consists of raw meat, bones, vegetables, and select other ingredients. This type of diet can be made at home or purchased ready-made in various places like pet supply stores. A few potential health benefits of this diet are shiny coats, healthy skin, clean teeth, more energy, and smaller stools. However, theres a danger of salmonella and E. coli when feeding your dog raw meat.To minimize the risk, the meat you feed your dog should always be fresh and locally produced. Owners should also be careful feeding their dogs bones so they dont choke. Recipes from canine nutritionists are the best way to ensure your dogs raw diet is balanced and any changes should be discussed with your vet.

How Much Raw Food Should I Feed My Adult Dog
When it comes to adult dogs, there are other considerations and needs you should factor in. An adult dogs diet is based on maintenance instead of the growth support that they needed as a puppy.
Just like humans, a dogs portion depends on their weight, metabolism and their activity level. Of course, you should talk to your vet if your dog has any special dietary needs or medical requirements that affect her food intake.
Here are some general guidelines for feeding your adult dog raw food:
- Active, underweight adult dogs should eat 3% of their current weight in pounds per day.
- Senior, less active, overweight adult dogs should eat 1.5% of their current weight in pounds per day.
- Adult dogs at an ideal weight should eat 2-3% of their current weight in pounds per day.
If you are wondering how often you should feed your dog, we recommend 2-4 times per day for puppies and 1-2 times per day for adult dogs. Again, this will depend on if your dog has any specific requirements set out by your vet.
What Does Your Golden Retriever Need
Caring for a dog is a big responsibility. They depend on you for all their needs.
When choosing food for your Golden Retriever, look for higher protein and fat-rich formulations. Animal protein is best because it contains amino acids that your dog needs. Nutrients such as calcium and phosphorus are essential for puppies and vitamins B, A, and E for all stages of life.
Search for EPA, ALA, and DHA because they are useful for the brain and nervous system, heart and lungs, and immune system.

What Are The Benefits Of Homemade Dog Food
Surprisingly, after researching healthy homemade dog foods to put this guide together, I could not find any professional advice that proved homemade dog foods are any healthier than processed.
According to Dr. Cailin Heinze , studies show you are more likely to do more harm than good as most homemade or online recipes lack one or more important nutrients.
On the other side, commercial foods are legally required to meet nutritional standards that guarantee they can be marked as complete and balanced foods.
Healthy options for pets require very specific amounts of ingredients that I share below in this guide. But keep in mind that consistently feeding your pet a home diet may be well worth coming with commercial foods for the best results.
