Behavior Around Other Dogs

So What Do They Look Like
A purebred black-marked golden retriever will still have that trademark goldencoat. It wont be brown or pure black. But they will have a black patch or two. This can appear anywhere and can range from a tiny little dot to a large patch that covers up to a quarter of their body.;
Sometimes theyll have a half black face or a black tail.
They often have a darker coat than a standard Golden, but it will still be gold. They may have a black snout. Goldens come in a range of colors, including dark red, but also dark golden, gold, light golden, and very light cream.
Their eyes wont be blue or black, theyll have the same brown eyes that all Goldens have, unless they happen to have a genetic mutation in the genes that control eye color. That would be extremely rare!
Other than that, they are identical to their Golden siblings. They get the same size and they have the same shedding coat. If you covered up that black mark, they would be indistinguishable from any other purebred Golden.;
You may have seen a Golden Retriever with a black spot on their tongue or the roof of their mouth. Thats a different gene and not related to a black marked gene. Dont worry, this isnt usually a sign of a problem.;
Sometimes dogs just have black marks in their mouths, but have a vet take a look to be safe. Likewise, some Goldens have some black skin pigment or black underbellies. Its normal.

Black Or White Markings
This IS possible, but it is really quite uncommon. This mutation can be found in Golden Retrievers and yellow Labradors. The cause of this black spot is what is called a somatic mutation. This is a mutation that turns the e/e color genotype to an E/e color genotype. The;e/e is the genotype that produces the yellow to red coat color in golden retrievers and yellow labs. ;If they naturally had the E/e ;or E/e genotype, they would either be black dogs or liver/chocolate dogs (this is the genotype found in the flat coat retriever.
According to doggenetics.uk,
If a;pigment;somatic mutation takes place during the development of the embryo, patches of another color may appear on the animal. This is often seen as black patches on Labradors and Golden Retrievers. It is not certain why pigment mutations seem to appear in these breeds more than others, however its possible that the recessive red gene is unstable and particularly prone to mutation. All it takes is for one cell to mutate early on in development then all cells descended from that one as the embryo grows will be the different color. Due to the mutation these patches effectively have a different genotype to the rest of the dog, and this is sometimes known as;mosaicism.

Whenever youre evaluating any breeder whos breeding pet dogs, their two main goals should always be temperament and health, with color or appearance secondary.
How Do Black Goldens Compare With Traditional Golden Retrievers
Black Golden Retrievers are actually no different than traditional Golden Retrievers. The only difference is that their coat is entirely black.
Because of this, you can still expect your Black Golden to live for 1012 years and stand about 2324 inches tall. It will weigh between 65 and 75 pounds.
Besides the different coloring, you can expect your Black Golden to have the same temperament as a traditional Golden. This means you will get a dog that is affectionate, friendly, and somewhat goofy.
This dog will turn heads wherever you go, but it will also make friends with strangers. If you take it to a sidewalk cafe, dont be surprised if it introduces itself to the people at the next table. If you arent petting the dog, it might try to find someone nearby to fill in for you!
Golden Retrievers also have a high need for exercise. They love to swim and their favorite game is to play fetch at a beach or lakeside. All you have to do is toss a stick into the water and your dog will be more than happy to bring it back to you!
You should be careful with this activity, though. Golden Retrievers are highly enthusiastic and will focus on one game for a long time.
They might play so hard that they get too tired to walk home! You should also be careful if there are birds on the water. The dogs will swim far out to investigate the waterfowl.
Your Golden will always be full of love but you do need to take care to keep him stimulated. This includes both mentally and physically.

What About White Golden Retrievers
Despite what some unethical breeders will say, there are no whiteGolden Retrievers. Based on the genetics of Golden Retriever colors, some dogswill look white.
Instead, these Golden Retrievers are simply a pale shade ofthe Cream-colored Golden Retrievers mentioned above.
The question is probably more a matter of semantics. Does itmatter if a dog has a white coat or a pale cream coat that just lookswhite?
The only reason to bring it up is to keep yourself frombeing duped by breeders into believing that a litter of puppies is so rare asto justify an exorbitant amount per puppy.
At the time of writing this book, the pale cream-coloredcoat is very popular in Britain and is growing in popularity in the UnitedStates. That popularity brings out the greedy in some unscrupulous breeders.Some people will tell you anything to sell a puppy.
The truth of supply and demand economics, however, will dictate the prices of available puppies. Dont allow yourself to be convinced that the price of these puppies is any more than supply and demand.
Which Variations Of Golden Retrievers Have Shorter Hair
Golden Retrievers that come from a line of hunting and working dogs also referred to as field golden retrievers often have shorter hair than goldens that come from a line of show golden retrievers. Thats because show dogs are bred with long-haired goldens to produce longer-haired goldens.
Its important to understand here that golden retrievers are only one breed and dont have main variations of the breed that have distinctly shorter hair such as with German Shepherds, for example.
However, with time, goldens have slightly split into two groups; working and show dogs. Working dogs were bred for purposes other than how they look, while show dogs were bred for their appearances, which explains how and why they have longer coats than their working counterparts.
By the way, the huge popularity of golden retrievers is actually the reason why so many goldens have slightly deviated from the breeds official standards which is one of the reasons why golden retrievers dont win shows, and you can learn all the reasons why golden retrievers dont win dog shows here, I think you will find it a very interesting read.

Golden Retrievers And Cancer
Unfortunately, this breed is at risk of developing cancer.
Statistically, 61% of Golden Retrievers experience cancer. This is one of the highest percentages of any dog breed.
It is not yet fully understood which specific genes are leading to the inheritance of cancer-risk genes.
This makes it a disease that neither the breeder nor owner can control.
