But before you delve into the different types and styles today, you should understand where Golden Retrievers came from.

Do Their Temperaments Differ

All three types of Golden Retriever should have the same classic temperament for which the breed is known and well-loved.

All Goldens should be friendly, affectionate, playful, obedient, gentle, and intelligent.

Of course, poor breeding practices can negatively affect temperament. The way in which a dog is raised, socialized, and trained can also greatly impact temperament.

That said, no matter which region Golden Retrievers come from, they should display a temperament true to their breed, as temperament is one of the defining hallmarks of the breed.

Adopting A Golden Retriever

Do you know all the different types of Golden Retrievers?

As with any dog, when adopting Golden Retrievers, itâs important to give them a safe space. Often, this means crate training in a space large enough for them to turn around and lay comfortably, but not too large that they use half the space as a bathroom.

âThe crate should be a positive place for them, so feeding them and offering them treats in the crate is encouraged,â Dr. Fox says. When out of the crate, your new pup should be supervised to prevent accidents or the ingesting of a foreign object. If you have other pets in the home, itâs also important to introduce them slowly and always under direct supervision.

âItâs also very important for puppies to stay inside until theyâre fully vaccinated to prevent infectious disease transmission,â Dr. Fox adds. âAs soon as you bring your new puppy home, they should see a local veterinarian for an exam, deworming and vaccinations.â

What Breeds Make A Golden Retriever

The golden retriever breed dates back to the early 1800s. A gentleman by the name of Lord Tweedmouth bred dogs in the Scottish Borders to be able to hunt and collect game from long distances. Tweedmouth first mated a yellow Flat-Coated Retriever and the Tweed Spaniel. The resulting litter had four puppies, which were then crossed with other breeds, including an Irish Setter and a Bloodhound.

It wasnt until the 1900s that the dogs were given their own category. In 1920, they were officially named Golden Retrievers.

Field Bred Golden Retrievers

Field golden retrievers embody what golden retrievers were originally bred to do: hunt.

Field bred goldens are on the smaller end of the spectrum as far as how big goldens get, theyre athletic, and theyre typically more driven than other styles of goldens.

Their coats are usually shorter and range from gold to red, and they have tons of energy.

They excel at hunting and agility, and make great family pets, as long as theyre trained properly and have a job to do.

They also may be rather mouthy, considering theyre bred to retrieve things with their mouth.

To be clear, field goldens are golden retrievers, theyre just a particular style of golden.

History Of Golden Retrievers

Goldens were originally bred in Scotland in the 19th century to serve as gun dogs and to retrieve shot waterfowl.

For centuries, people had only been able to hit game from a relatively short distance. But, as hunting technology and guns improved, the hunting style had to change and evolve too. Since hunters could now shoot birds from further distances, the game fell further away and often ended in streams, rivers, or ponds.

The retriever dogs of that time were not bred to tackle these new challenges. While they could collect game, they couldnt find the downed game at a distance the new guns could reach. They also could not retrieve game from lakes or rivers.

So, breeders needed to create a new dog.

Dudley Marjoribanks, the first Lord of Tweedmouth, took on the challenge. He crossed a yellow-colored retriever, named Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel female dog, called Belle. The Tweed water spaniel is now an extinct breed but was then very common in Scotland.

The resulting litter had four puppies. Those four puppies became the foundation of a breeding program, which also included a bloodhound, an Irish setter, the St. Johns water dog of Newfoundland, and two wavy-coated black retriever dogs.

The golden retriever, as it came to be known, was born.

Whether you choose to add any of the three varieties of the golden retriever to your family, you can thank an English nobleman for the popularity of the breed. Golden retrievers have colorful mythology that takes the breed back to a touring Russian circus. The truth is not as colorful and starts with Dudley Coutts Majoribanks. The son of a Scottish banker and part of the Coutts banking dynasty, Majoribanks was the second son of a successful banker. The founder of the golden retriever breed had been interested in breeding since adolescence. Major banks leather-bound breeding journal is a prized possession of The Kennel Club in England and tracks his breeding journey from childhood to several years before his death.

The American Kennel Club explains the spread of golden retrievers to different parts of the world can be linked to the Majoribanks family . The son of Majoribanks, Edward, bred his golden retriever with a red setter and began the tradition of dark coats.
