Walk With A Friends Dog

MUST HAVE DOG PRODUCTS WITH TWO GOLDEN RETRIEVERS

Remember that friend with the lovely dog whos been coming to see your puppy? Lets call them back. Youre going to go for a walk with them now. Fun!

How to do it

  • Go to the place you usually take your puppy out for walks and have your friend meet you there.
  • Walk for around 15 minutes together, each dog on their lead.
  • Walk alongside your friend so that your puppy learns to walk near another dog without it being a game.
  • Any time your puppy looks at you, give them a treat this is brilliant!
  • Every few minutes, stop with your puppy and do some training. Their name, or recalls are good ones to go over.
  • Make sure the other dog gets treats too for being such a good helper!
  • Not going to lie, this is going to be a hard exercise for your puppy. You cant blame them for being so excited! Keep up the frequent rewards to keep them as engaged and focused as possible.

What Can I Do To Protect My Golden Retrievers Paws In The Summer Months

My number one recommendation is to not to walk in the midday heat. If you do take a walk the best time is early morning or in the evening.

walk in the shade or on the grass, as the sidewalk might still be hot in the evening. I have written an article called, What Temperatures Are Ideal For A Golden Retriever you can find it here.

Ever walked on hot concrete barefoot? Remember hopping around like a lunatic It is a very common way to damage their paws.

Take a look at this video I found on YouTube below.

Dogs paws burned on hot concrete.

If you want added protection use wax. I recommend using, Mushers Secret Pet Paw Protection Wax. You can find the latest price and customer reviews on . It is easy to apply, hypoallergenic, and non-toxic.

Paw wax is designed to protect your dogs feet from several potentially harmful surfaces, chemicals, and heat damage. It will also keep their paws from cracking.

If your dog has had problems with there paws you can try dog boots/Shoes.

You can also have the added benefit of Reflective Velcro, Very handy when the light fades. They might take some getting used to.

    Adopting Golden Retriever Puppies

According to the AKC, most breed rescues report that a majority of their rescue dogs come from individual owner surrender, with the most common reasons being a change in lifestyle or the breed not being a good fit. This means that there may be many dogs and puppies out there that are looking for a new forever home.

The main difference between a breeder and a rescue is that a rescue may not always have young puppies to choose from. The benefit, however, is that most are mandated to only adopt out dogs that have been microchipped and spayed/neutered. This means you may end up with a dog thats already been housebroken, and doesnt need these common medical procedures. You may also find a golden retriever mix that has all the traits you want from the breed, but with a little extra thrown in.

Finding a golden retriever rescue can be as simple as searching the internet. The AKC also has an excellent list of golden retriever rescues on their site.

    Getting A Golden Retriever

Do plenty of research before you get a Golden Retriever. Make sure you have the knowledge and dedication to give to these sweet natured dogs to keep them happy and the time and space to exercise them. While they make great family pets, make sure you are absolutely ready to take on the commitment of getting a dog first.

Youll Also Need To Puppy Proof Your House And Yard

" Must retrieve, must retrieve" said the Golden Retriever ...

A new puppy can be a very destructive force around the home for the first few months. With that in mind, youll want to make sure you puppy proof your home and yard to prevent your puppy from destroying your prized possessions.

Puppy proofing will not only keep your essential items safe, but it will also keep your puppy safe from harm when it cannot be supervised at all times.

    Be Patient With Potty Training

I had this dream that Zoey would just be potty trained within a week of coming home. WRONG. We had so.many.accidents no matter how diligent I was about crating, looking for signs she needed to go, how many trips we took outside, etc. It seemed like she could just squat and pee in an instant. While there are definite dos and donts of potty training, you just have to give them time. A puppys bladder is not matured enough to hold it for any length of time until about 4 months old. Before this they literally have to go when they have to go.

Hitting that 4 month mark was magical and we had very few accidents after because wed done all the work on good potty habits before. Another friend of mine recently brought home the cutest lab puppy but she was so upset because he was having accidents everywhereincluding in his crate. I encouraged her to be patient and he did eventually mature out of it.

Just a note: I am not a fan of using puppy pads in the house. I personally dont ever want to train my dogs that its okay to go inside. But thats just my opinion, I know for some city dwellers or those with small dogs it can work well.

What To Put In A Canine Journey Bag

I organized my packing record into classes.

Meals and medicine goes right into a locking bin so the canines cant unintentionally gorge on meals or eat remedy that may make them sick.

I put the canines consuming package bowls, slop mat, and many others right into a tote bag.

Maintaining your canine journey necessities in a bag isnt attainable for among the greater gadgets however storing them in the identical space of the home will provide help to pack faster when its time to go.

The cleansing provides and most of whats on the remainder of the guidelines goes inside a canine journey bag.

    Exceptions are large, cumbersome gadgets.

For instance, the transportable canine crate, if I deliver it, simply will get shoved someplace in my automotive.

The canine blankets, crate, and crate pad/mattress dont make it inside a bag both.

Common Health Problems In Golden Retrievers

Like any purebred dog, Golden Retrievers may encounter some breed-related health problems throughout their lives. Often, Breed Clubs will also be able to provide advice on what tests your breed may need and where to get these done. Make sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening to reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by these upsetting conditions.

Golden Retrievers are amongst a group of breeds classed as Category Two by The Kennel Club. These are breeds of dog that have been highlighted as having points of concern visible features which, if exaggerated, might potentially affect the breed in the future and cause health and welfare concerns. For Golden Retrievers, this is because they can have short legs in proportion to their body and a tendency to become overweight.

Some of the conditions Golden Retrievers are more prone to developing include:

  • Ichthyosis a skin disease that causes thickening of the footpads and makes other areas of skin rough and covered with thick, greasy flakes that stick to the hair.
  • Make Your Home Safe For Your Golden Retriever Puppy

    Puppy Q & A! Training tips, must haves + mistakes we’ve made!

An essential part of preparing for a new dog is to puppy-proof your home and yard before you bring your pooch to the house.

Youll need to make your home safe for a puppy and then keep it safe as your puppy becomes a dog because even older dogs get curious about things like the trash and get into trouble if you make it easy for them to do so.

Make sure your dog cant reach any electric cords, remove items from low tables where your puppy might reach them, and put away anything vital that you think might harm your dog.

Here are a few other items youll need for your golden retriever at your home:

    • #4 Puppy padsWhile not everybody feels the need to buy these, they can come in handy while you are potty training your dog. If you have an especially lovely carpet, it might be a wise idea.
    • #5 Puppy toysPuppies require several different types of toys to keep them busy. Chew toys are essential because your puppy will need to chew while teething. Your puppy can learn what is proper to chew and chew toys can help keep your puppy from chewing on your items. Make sure you buy the right size of toys for your golden retriever puppy. You dont want to purchase tiny toys that your dog might choke on.
    • #6 Travel harnessYoull want this while you are riding with your dog in the car.
    • #7 Baby gatesIf you want to keep your puppy out of individual rooms in your house, a baby gate will be an idea.

Put Away Medicines And Cleaning Supplies

You want to make sure your puppy wont get its paws on anything that can kill it, and a big issue with puppies is medication and cleaning supplies. Both of these types of substances can kill a dog that ingests them. So, keep your medications and cleaning supplies high up in cupboards or include childproof latches if the cabinets are on the dogs level.

What Should I Do The First Week With A New Puppy

As service dog puppy raisers we follow the rules the school has laid out for new puppies for decades. When it comes to the first week the service dog school asks us to take it easy and let our puppies get used to their new home.

That being said here are some of the things we do during the first week with a new puppy:

  • Get The Puppy Essentials While you can look at the above list Id like to mention the importance of collar and pet tags. Weve heard of puppies getting lost on the first day and without a collar and tags they may never find theyre way back home.
  • Good House Manners Dont let you puppy get away with any of the cute stuff just because hes cute. Stop the jumping, scratching, nibbling, pulling while hes young otherwise youll have to deal with an unruly adolescent.
  • Potty Training This is number 1a on our list of things to do. PRO TIP: Keep a schedule including every time your puppy poops, pees, or eats. Youll notice a pattern when it comes to his potty schedule.
  • Crate Training This is number 1b on our list. PRO TIP: Associate as many positive things with the crate before bedtime including but not limited to: meals, treats, toys, stuffed KONGs, chews, bully sticks, etc.
  • Puppy Socialization We keep it quiet the first week, but we do like our whole family to interact with our new puppy. Our most recent puppy, Elsa got to meet a few close friends and family the first week, but I wouldnt recommend too much more than that.

    Routine Care Diet And Exercise

Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Golden live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine.

    • Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. This will keep her out of trouble and away from objects she shouldnt put in her mouth.
    • She needs a thorough brushing at least weekly most of the year. Twice a year she blows her coat and loses crazy amounts of hair daily brushing is recommended during this time.
    • Golden Retrievers generally have good teeth, and you can keep them perfect by brushing them at least twice a week!
    • Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. Dont worrywell show you how!
    • She’s a smart dog with lots of energy, so keep her mind and body active, or she’ll get bored. That’s when the naughty stuff starts.
    • She excels at dog sports like flyball, agility, dock diving, and obedience events.
    • She has a passion for water, and swimming is a perfect form of exercise for this water retriever.
    • Keep your dogs diet consistent and dont give her people food.
    • Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age.
    • Exercise your dog regularly, but dont overdo it at first.

Kongs the best thing in the world to get some peace and quiet We are now the proud owners of 6 kongs, and once a week, I make a big batch of yogurt, pumpkin, and peanut butter all mixed together and stuff the kongs full. I will add in half the yogurt mixture, then add kibble, then top it off with more yogurt mixture. We then freeze them. Each frozen kong will take Coconut anywhere from 20-30 minutes to eat and she loves them!

You can also just stuff them with treats, or just peanut butter, or really any mixture of anything. I highly suggest freezing them, though.

Lickimats same idea as the Kong, but this time you spread it out onto a mat that has a bunch of grooves and edges, so when you put the yogurt, pumpkin, and peanut butter mixture into it and freeze it, it takes them a lot longer to get out of each crevice!! 30 minutes of silence thank you!

Bowls these bowls work great. They are a little on the small side, but perfect for puppies. Coconut still uses them We also place them on top of these cute bone shaped waterproof mat for spillage purposes.

Slow Feeding Bowl we had to transition Coconut to the slow feeding bowl because we would put her food down and literally 25 seconds later it was gone. I was literally SHOCKED the first time that happened and was like there is no way that is good for her enter this wonderful bowl. It makes it way more difficult for them to actually get to the food.

Collar A basic, highly reviewed collar.
