Many Times These Dogs Are Brought Into Shelters Because Their Previous Owners Did Not Take Care Of Them

San Antonio couple grows desperate to find missing golden retrievers

This can happen for many reasons but the main reason is usually that the owner is abusive. But, animals are often abandoned on streets or in dumpsters. There are several reasons why dogs become abandoned but one of the main reasons is the abuse they receive from their previous owners. Many people love these dogs but do not have the time or money to properly care for them.

If you are trying to find a Golden Retriever rescue in San Antonio, there are several important things to keep in mind. One of these is to find a dog that matches the personality of your household. When looking for a dog from a rescue group, you should inquire as to whether the dog is going to be a mixed breed or if it is purebred. Purebreds are easier to care for than mixed breeds.

Dfw Metro Golden Retriever Rescue

A message from the Board of Directors of DFW Metro Golden Retriever Rescue:

Dallas Fort Worth Metro Golden Retriever Rescue wishes to let everyone know that as of July 15, 2015 we are no longer acting as a rescue organization. We are happy to report that after 30+ years of dedication to the Golden Retrievers in Texas and literally thousands of dogs that have been enriched by adoption through our Rescue we can step back and let Golden Retriever Rescue Alliance, Inc. handle the responsibility going forward. This group has worked side by side with us for many years doing the great work of Rescue in the DFW Metro Area and after September 15th, 2015 will continue the great work we started.

With kindest regards, and humble thanks for your commitment to the dogs,Board of Directors DFWMGRR

When DFW Metro disbanded in 2015, they asked GRRALL to take on the responsibility of caring for any of their adopted dogs in need of help. This means that any adopter from DFW Metro who can no longer care for their dog can contact GRRALL and we will assist in finding that dog a new, loving forever home. If you are in need of that help, please fill out our Surrender a Golden form and indicate that your dog is from DFW Metro.

There Are Several Things That You Should Know About Golden Retrievers

They are extremely loyal and one of the hardest dogs to train. Because of this, it is often necessary to adopt one from a shelter.

However, you should not let this stop you from finding a dog for yourself. There are many great places where you can find a Golden Retriever to adopt and you should not let the fact that they are from a shelter stop you from taking one home.

Members of golden retriever clubs may have an inside word about a golden retriever that needs a new home, or might be able to point you in the right direction.

It may be a long shot, but it could be worth it.

And then, once you have your golden retriever, the clubs can be a great resource to help make golden retriever parenthood easier.

You can join their events and sports to socialize your pup, get some helpful tips from golden retriever owners, as well as get referrals for services like a vet, groomer, or doggy daycare.

Am I Prepared For The Financial Burden Of Veterinary Care Quality Food Proper Equipment And Training For The Next 10

The Humane Society estimates that it costs owners about $850 per year to feed and care for a dog the size of a Golden Retriever. Every dog needs year-round heartworm preventative and an annual check-up by a veterinarian including inoculations. Some dogs have health problems that require continuing medication or surgery. All dogs deserve a healthy diet of well-balanced dog food formulated for their needs. They also need a collar, leash, comb, brush, toys and food and water bowls. Owners must license their dogs according to local regulations. GRR strongly recommends that the adoptive family attend obedience classes with their Golden, as it will greatly improve the quality of life for both pet and owner.

Other Ways To Find A Rescue Golden Retriever

Goldens picked up by these rescues arent the only ones who need a new home.

Another way to find a golden retriever that needs to be rehomed is by word of mouth.

And the best way to do that is through local Facebook groups.

Sometimes in these local golden retriever groups, people will post that their dog needs a new home.

So this is another way for you to find a rescue golden retriever.

And another way might be getting word from someone in a local golden retriever club

What Are Rescue Dogs Like

âGooseâ? 6mo Golden Retriever | Extreme Off Leash Transformation! | San Antonio

No two dogs, even of the same breed, are ever alike. All of our rescue dogs are friendly, wonderful dogs that desperately need love, attention and a second chance at life. Many are housebroken and some have obedience training. Most rescue dogs are between 6 months-10 years old. A common misconception about older dogs is that they are untrainable Goldens, however, are so eager to please that they are very trainable at any age. They may actually learn more easily when they are older, more mature and less puppylike.

Many rescue dogs come from owners who no longer want to care for them. Usually, these people bought a cute fluffy puppy without realizing the cute puppy would soon become a large, hairy, adult dog who would need lots of time, training, love and attention. This is often when they decide to get rid of the dog because they dont have time for it. Occasionally owners have to place their Goldens because of allergies or because they are moving somewhere the dog will not be welcome.

The rest of our dogs come in as strays from shelters. Occasionally we are able to shut down a puppy mill or backyard breeding operation. One such special rescue was the Tie a Gold Ribbon rescue in 1998, which resulted in the rescue of nearly 100 dogs! We do not place known biters or growlers. Any dog will bite if provoked enough, but any dog we know to be aggressive is not placed through our program.

One Of The Things That Can Put A Damper On Adopting A Golden Retriever Is The Cost Of The Pet

Unfortunately, these dogs are expensive and many people do not have the money to spend on them. But, there is hope for people who are looking for a dog and cannot afford the cost. By searching and looking at local classified ads, one can find several animals for sale. The cost of caring for one of these dogs varies but it will not be more than a couple of hundred dollars a month.

Another way for you to get a dog is to contact a local rescue group. There are many different dog rescue groups in San Antonio. Many of these groups also have an adoption center where you can take your new pet home with you.

Working With Other Rescue Groups

While GRR’s rescue and rehoming efforts are localized to the Central Texas area, due to large influxes of Goldens and a shortage of foster space, we do at times reach out to other Golden Retriever Rescue groups both within and outside of the state of Texas.

In building reciprocal working relationships with other Golden Retriever rescue groups with similar policies, we increase our ability to reach out to a greater number of dogs than we could as a single organization.

Do I Have The Facilities To Keep A Golden Retriever

An adult Golden of 60-80 pounds is a big hairy handful! They shed their beautiful coats, sometimes profusely, and are not suited to the immaculate housekeeper. Goldens are happiest living in the house, with the family, so they must be housebroken and trained to obey the house rules. Owners must be willing to keep their dog in the house while they are away. GRR recommends crating or baby-gating a golden until it is trustworthy and can be allowed free roam in your home.

Goldens need regular exercise to stay healthy. GRRs fence policy is as follows: GRR requires a fenced yard . If GRR makes an exception to allow an apartment dweller to adopt without a fence you must live on the ground floor or have access to an elevator for the dog. GRR does not accept an invisible fence as an appropriate fence. Additionally, GRR may consider placing a dog age 8 or older in a residence without a fence. Note: a slightly younger dog may be considered on a case-by-case basis. .

How Grr Prepares Dogs For Adoption

  • Examined by vet
  • Basic obedience training started
    • Note on medical issues while in foster care:
    • Gold Ribbon Rescue strives to ensure that any of our foster dogs receive proper medical care. This includes, as needed, vaccinations, heartworm treatment, treatment for intestinal parasites, and any surgeries for known and existing conditions while the foster is in our care.

    • While we would like to be able to perform extensive medical tests on every dog, we have only the capacity to do so when a medical condition is obvious while the dog is in our foster care program. Medical testing such as heart, hip, eye, kidney and liver assessments on what appear to be healthy dogs is not within the financial capacity of any rescue group.

    • When we adopt our rescue dogs, we do our utmost to understand and share with our adopters any known medical conditions that one of our fosters have been treated for and which may present as a limitation post-adoption.
