Homeward Bound Goldens Rescue

Last on the list of the best Golden Retriever rescues in California is Homeward Bound Goldens Rescue. Founded in 2000, Homeward Bound has rescued, healed, and provided sanctuary to over 9,500 Golden Retrievers. They have carved out a haven in Elverta, California, where the Golden Retrievers can run, train, and play on eight acres of countryside land.

Their Golden Retrievers come from all over California and the United States. This is made possible through their volunteer networks which go above and beyond to rescue this dog breed. The vast majority of the dogs that enter their rescue are between 1 to 13 years old. Its rare to find a Golden Retriever puppy but they do appear occasionally.

They give every Golden Retriever that comes into their rescue program a basic veterinarian exam to check for any health conditions. They then bring the Golden up-to-date on their vaccinations, spay/neuter them, and ensure they have a clean bill of health before adoption.

To adopt, you will need to complete an online adoption form. Once your form is received, a placement volunteer in your local area will contact you within a week. The volunteer will arrange a home visit with you, either physically or virtually. Once youre approved, they will begin searching for a match.

The rescue usually updates photos of available Golden Retrievers for adoption. You can either check their website to see if any Golden Retrievers interest you or wait for your placement officer to get back to you.

Golden Retriever Rescue Information: The Golden Retriever is a gundog that loves the water. Originally bred for hunting, Goldens make wonderful family pets. Golden Retrievers are very sweet, patient, gentle, and excellent with children. Goldens are eager to please and respond very well to obedience training. Goldens make good watchdogs but are far too friendly with everyone, from strangers to other dogs, to be used as guard dogs. Goldens need human companionship. They can get into trouble if neglected. This breed is suitable for homes with yards, and needs plenty of brisk daily exercise.

Golden Retriever Trivia: Golden Retrievers excel in competitive obedience. Golden Retrievers are often used as therapy dogs. Golden Retrievers are descended from various English hunting dogs possibly including the bloodhound. Golden Retrievers can be trained as seeing eye dogs. Golden Retrievers are among the most popular family pets.

Why Do People Put Golden Retrievers Up For Adoption In California

Golden Retrievers are put up for adoption and need rescuing for a variety of reasons. Some of these reasons include:

  • Golden Retrievers are very active. Many people underestimate the amount of exercise a Golden needs. If you dont exercise this dog breed, they may become destructive around your house.
  • Golden Retrievers usually bark. When theyre not properly trained, some Golden Retrievers will bark. This is due to several factors stress, anxiety, territorial needs, fear, or wanting to play. Some apartments or households cannot accommodate barking.
  • Pet Allergies. Golden Retrievers arent hypoallergenic. They shed hair and pick up dandruff which causes pet allergies. Many dog owners dont know they are allergenic to Golden Retrievers before they adopt one.
  • Financial Costs. Dogs cost a lot of money to maintain. Especially if they have underlying health conditions. Many times people can not afford to keep their dogs so they are forced to surrender them.
  • Owners Health. Unfortunate events in life happen and sometimes a person gets sick or passes away. If youre no longer able to care for a Golden Retriever, then we highly suggest you put them in one of these reputable rescues in California.

What Our Adopters Say

Here are some comments from families that have adopted from us…

There is no way we can possibly thank you enough for letting Jack spend his last five years with us. Despite what his previous owners may have believed, he was a wonderful dog who brought us so much joy, so many laughs, and now, so many tears. We will truly miss our “Big Old Big Dog”.

Koda is doing great! We love him more then life. Thanks for letting us welcome this amazing dog into our life!!! He’s brought us so much joy and laughs!

Travis & Lindsay

Thank you CCLRR for all that you do to find these wonderful dogs a home. I am happier every single day because of my Tucker boy and that is made possible because you took the time to scoop up a lab who needed you. Thank you!

We had almost five amazing years with Harley and truly believe senior pets are the best. She was so easy, sweet, calm and happy. She loved us and we loved her! The perfect fit! We were blessed. Thank you for bringing her into our lives.

Jenny

Chief is doing wonderful! He came home and jumped right into the family. He made himself comfortable in our bed the first night and has claimed our big chair as his own. He is the biggest cuddler and we couldn’t love him more. We’re so happy to have him and so thankful to CCLRR for bringing him to us.

Best Golden Retriever Rescues In California

June 14, 2022 by Garrett Yamasaki

Heres what you need to know if youre searching for the best Golden Retriever rescues in California. Opening your home to a rescued Golden Retriever is a rewarding experience. Many Golden Retrievers end up in rescues because of buyer impulse, the unexpected cost of raising a dog, illness, barking, or behavioral issues.

Many rescued Golden Retrievers for adoption are not behaviorally or genetically inferior, they just need a better life. Chances are they have been through a rough patch of life, might not be trained, or may be a mixed breed. Thus, we compiled a list of the top 4 Golden Retriever rescues in California to help you save a life.

According to the American Kennel Club , Golden Retrievers are the 3rd most popular dog in the world. Thus, Golden Retriever rescues in California are always busy and this breed is in high demand. Youll have to reach out to many dog rescues and remain on a waitlist before you can get a chance to adopt a Golden Retriever.

Before scrolling down this list of Golden Retriever rescues in California, you can check out these other recommendations from our team at We Love Doodles: Doodle Rescues in California and Goldendoodle Breeders in California.

Adopt Through Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue

Golden retriever struggling to stay afloat rescued from icy pond on Long Island
Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole. Roger Caras

Through education, breed-specific rescues, and a shift in Americans favorite dog breeds, Golden Retriever rescues nationwide have seen a dramatic decline in Golden Retrievers needing to be rehomed. We continue our efforts to support Goldens in need including those from puppy mills and trusted international rescue partners.

If you are seeking a purebred Golden, you should expect a lengthy wait. Young, perfectly trained or puppy Goldens are even more rare. Many of the dogs we see have special needs and even these have many applicants. We value all of our previous adopters, donors, volunteers and interested families. However, we can only prioritize based on the best fit for the dog. Those families with children under 5 years old often have a longer wait as some of our dogs arrive with limited history on their ability to live with small children. We value the safety of our adopters and only those dogs with a known history with young children can be placed with families who have young children or frequent young visitors.

We understand and share your love of the Golden breed. If you decide to consider purchase over adoption, please be sure to read our information about how to choose a responsible breeder so you dont inadvertently contribute to the horrors of puppy mills.
