Is It Difficult To Adopt A Golden Retriever From A Rescue

28 golden retrievers saved from deplorable conditions

The success of your application will heavily depend on: first, your eligibility and second, the availability of compatible Golden Retrievers in the shelter.

Rescue centers have specific guidelines that will tell if an applicant is qualified for adoption. If you are eager to adopt a Golden Retriever, you must first research the qualifications and requirements of the shelter/rescue you are to adopt.

Make sure that you can meet all of the policies and guidelines to secure approval of the application.

However, you should also understand that meeting the requirements doesnt guarantee success in adoption. In some cases, a lot of eligible applicants are not able to adopt Golden Retrievers because of the shortage of compatible dogs.

This Golden Rescue was founded by a group of experienced volunteers who focus their efforts on finding proper, loving homes for Goldens. I couldnt find any information on whether their dogs are spayed or neutered, or whether that have received vaccinations, so be thorough when approaching this Golden Retriever Rescue.

Their mission is to rescue and rehome adoptable Golden Retrievers in Southern Arizona. They only have two Google reviews online, but this group seems quite composed and professional. You can reach them by telephone or you can message them through their website.

Rescuing An Adult Golden Retriever

Adult golden retriever adoption is an entirely different experience to adopting a puppy. There are several benefits to saving an adult over rescuing a puppy, including:

  • Youll know the dogs adult appearance
  • You may be able to tell whether its a mixed breed or a purebred golden retriever
  • You may be able to identify medical issues and predispositions
  • Youll have a good idea of the dogs adult temperament
  • May already be potty trained and taught basic commands

Of course, while rescuing an adult golden has several benefits, it has a lot of downsides, too. For example, adult rescue dogs have sometimes been through past traumatic experiences, whether through irresponsible previous owners or because theyve been abandoned and living wild. While goldens are usually gentle, happy dogs, they can even have issues like aggression or fear.

Adult Goldens can come with other harmful behaviors, too. If an adult golden retriever wasnt appropriately trained as a puppy, it may have issues with potty training, bad leash etiquette, destructive behaviors, or lack of respect towards humans. While they can be trained out of these behaviors, its much harder to un-train an adult dog than train a puppy in the first place.

Golden Huggs Rescue is made up of a very small group of volunteers who have made it our mission to find loving suitable homes for displaced, abandoned, or stray dogs with golden personalities with our partners outside of New England.

Our dogs have either been relinquished by their owners, found as strays, or abandoned at the shelter door. It is irrelevant to us how they have managed to find themselves in these circumstances. It is only in their best interest that we try in earnest to get them out.

All of our volunteers have been involved in the rescue and placing of dogs for years. We are committed to doing our part to decrease the numbers of dogs that are euthanized at primarily southern shelters.

    The Adoption Process In Massachusetts

Shelters and rescues generally follow the same adoption process, outlined below:

    • Find a dog you like and fill out an application.
    • Once received, an adoption counselor will be in touch. If the counselor says the dog is still available, then you can schedule an appointment to meet them. These two steps can happen over the course of an hour or a few days .
    • When the two of you meet, see how the dog interacts with you and others in your household. Note what you and your dog may need to work on in terms of behavior, such as jumping on strangers.
    • If the dog is a fit, you can fill out the adoption paperwork. The shelter will use this information to contact your veterinarian and landlord, if applicable. If you dont have a veterinarian, the shelter can recommend some.
    • Once the paperwork is signed and the adoption fee paid, your adoption counselor will talk to you about proper dog ownership. This session will touch on topics like diet, training, and medical care.
    • Youre ready to take your dog home!

Most shelters will spay or neuter any unaltered dogs that cross their doors, but this isnt always possible. Some dogs are just too young to undergo the surgery, while others have medical needs that are more important.

History Of The Golden Retriever Breed

Dozens Of Golden Retrievers Rescued From Deplorable Conditions

Many people believe that Golden Retrievers are descendants of Russian sheepdogs bought from a circus. However, the breed was first developed at the highland estate of Lord Tweedmouth in Scotland. In his day, Tweedmouth bred different types of animals like the Golden Retriever.

Tweedmouths breeding records showed that he was aiming for a talented retriever. Tweedmouths breed was a waterfowl hunter with a superb nose that paid more attention to his human companion than the spaniels and setters used at that time for retrieving. Golden Retrievers are also known for their loyalty and even-tempered nature in the home.

How Much Should It Cost To Adopt A Golden Retriever

The cost of buying a pure-bred Golden Retriever from a breeder is a far cry from the cost of adopting one from a shelter.

On average, a pure-bred Golden Retriever can cost from $500 to $3,000. On the other hand, adopting a Golden Retriever will cost you about $150 to $600.

Most of the time, initial medical assessment and treatment are already employed for the dogs that are ready for adoption. If you think about it, adopting one seems like a good idea since youll be saving a dog while saving money.

Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary California

Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary do not only focus on rescuing Golden Retrievers but also other Golden mixes. This California-based non-profit organization has successfully found homes for more than 9,500 dogs across their jurisdiction.

HBGRRS promotes equal treatment to homeless dogs regardless of their age and breed. The organization is dedicated to providing secure and loving homes for homeless dogs and employing medical programs to ensure their health and well-being.

The rescue center also advocates for responsible guardianship through intensive propagation of public awareness by educating people on the proper way of taking care of dogs and the benefits of having them at home.

For each dog the HBGRRS rescues, a medical assessment is done. Spaying, neutering, deworming, and vaccination are employed as deemed necessary.

The dogs also undergo a behavioral examination to determine their compatibility with other dogs and their interaction with humans.

To ensure that the dogs will be in the right home, the Homeward rescue center has set guidelines that prospective foster homes should meet.

This includes a secure house that includes a fence, a decent sleeping area, and the capabilities of attending to the dogs veterinary needs.

Once you are deemed eligible, you can then proceed with filing your adoption application.

Tips For Getting Approved By A Rescue To Adopt A Golden Retriever

Adopting a Golden Retriever is not as easy as paying at the counter. Financially aside, you must prepare yourself and your surroundings. Here are some of the tips you can do to secure adoption:

    • Design your home in accordance with the adoption requirements. A lot of rescue centers have identical requirements that are specific to the home of the applicant. Some of these include a physical fence around the house, a comfortable sleeping quarter for the dog, and a pool with stairs. All of these aim to ensure the safety of the dog in your vicinity. If you are eager to have your application approved, make sure to comply with these guidelines before the home visit, or better, even before applying for adoption.
    • Prepare yourself financially. In adopting a pet, you should make sure that you will be able to provide for its regular needs. Most of the rescue centers consider financial capabilities as one of the most important criteria in adoption eligibility.
    • Be honest and transparent. Do not make up things during the interview just for the sake of approval. Most of the time, people value and appreciate transparency and honesty. If you do this in the interview, the evaluator might see the sincerity in your actions.

    Finding A Dog In Massachusetts

Most U.S. households have at least one pet, according to The Humane Society, so adopting a dog will put you in great company. Dog ownership is a great way not only to make a new furry friend but also to get to know your neighbors and explore events in your area.

Start your search by looking through shelters in your county, either online or in person. As you browse their pictures and read dogs backstories, consider what type of pet works best for your lifestyle. Are you a small or big dog person? Do you need a running partner or a couch potato? Be honest with yourself, and youre sure to find a great match.

Looking for a pet during the spring and summer months will increase your available options, as rescues usually see higher intakes during these times. Follow their posts online and social media to see if they schedule any adoption drives, as these often have discounted fees. You can also ask if they have any discounts for National Dog Day and Adopt a Dog Month.
