Adding Features With Simple Shapes

Now we will go in and draw the more detailed features of the dog. Even the smaller parts of a dog that appear complex can be loosely captured with a combination of shapes and lines. Lets break down each feature into simple silhouettes while thinking about the end effect.

Parts of the head

First, capture the shape of the jaw. Draw the dogs snout roughly in the shape of a skewed rectangle, then add a line to separate the upper and lower parts. A golden retrievers snout has sagging skin and an upturned mouth that gives the impression of a smile. It also features a sudden drop at the corners of the mouth. When viewed from the side, the snout should be divided by an S-shape in the lower part of the skewed rectangle.

When drawing the snout from the front, draw a gentle W-shaped line. In the middle of the line, draw another line connecting up to the nose. Make sure the corners of the mouth line arch out.

The golden retrievers eyes are a little droopy, which also makes them look friendly and gentle. Draw the eyes in a triangle so that you can capture the droopy shape.

The ears attach to the back of the head and flop down towards the front. Try to capture the sagging appearance of the ears with triangles or squares that cover the sides of the dogs face.

Parts of the body

Once all of the body parts are in place, start rounding the straight lines and corners. The lifelike silhouette is now completed.

Next Draw The Hair Around The Eyes

Remember to always look closely at the reference photo and observe how the fur is arranged and growing. Start at the root of the hair and draw outward the way the fur grows. This gives you a sharp line at the end of the hairs and makes the hair look more natural.

You dont need to use the same colors I use, these are just guidelines. I use Prismacolor pencils and if you use different pencils the colors will be slightly different, but youll still be able to succssfully draw this portrait.

I use a variety of colors to build up the layers; Cream, Rose Peach, Sienna Brown, Beige, Light Umber, Chocolate, Goldenrod, and Dark Brown.

Drawing The Neck And Chest

Puppy drawing, Dog drawing, Cute dog drawing

The next area is the fluffy hair beneath the chin and ear. I draw in the area with Light Umber. This area will go fairly quickly as it doesnt have the details that the face has, and I will use solvent to blend it later.

Using various colors as previously stated, I add several layers of color so I can use the solvent to blend them smoothly. You need 4 to 5 layers to get a smooth blend when using solvent.

I use a light touch and draw lines to show definition in the fur and shadows. Sometimes, I also use the pencil on its side, softly creating a wash over the whole area. I repeated this step until I got the drawing where I wanted it.

Once the main colors are in place, I continue adding more layers and details, still using pretty much the same colors throughout the piece.

For the solvent blend, I apply the solvent with a little brush and make sure to follow the direction of the hair with the brush. This softens the colors without completely blending them and makes them look more natural. The solvent also makes the colors look brighter.

The next step is adding fine hairs and highlights with Brush & Pencil Titanium White Mixture. I apply this with a small brush over the areas I blended with solvent. You can see this in this photo.

  • Create a black with a mix of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna, a watery to milky consistency. Apply to the darkest parts of the eye.

Create the underpainting for the nose.

  • Create a watery pink with a mix of Permanent Rose and Yellow Ochre. This is the color I see underneath the blacks of the nose.

  • Apply fur markings around the edge of the head and neck, and around the prominent shapes using Yellow Ochre, a watery consistency.

Choosing The Dog Picture

Selecting a sharp picture with greater detail makes the drawing process far easier, as this provides you with a high-quality point of reference. Try to keep the drawing as simplified as you can. Pay attention to the dogs facial expression, the direction the fur is sitting, and the reflectivity of the eyes. When you can gauge these factors by looking at the photograph, you know that you have selected a good picture to work with.

Avoid the mistake of rushing this process and selecting a picture without vivid details or one that is not in focus. You will be compelled to think too much and lose much of the required detail in the process. Fluency is essential when working, so a sharper, more detailed image that captures your interest will stay present in your mind, making the drawing process far easier.
