As you may know, after the shelter-in-place orders were putin place last year, we closed adoption applications in May 2020 for volunteersafety and because we had very few Goldens and many more applicants.
Since January, NGRR has had a few more Goldens come into ourcare, which makes us cautiously optimistic that there will be more Goldens toplace with adopting families than there were last year. NGRR has re-opened our Adoption Applications on April 1. As restrictions ease, please bepatient as we continue to adhere to socially distanced, mask-wearing encounters,preferably outdoors. Please also be aware that the wait time for an availableGolden may be several months or more, so your patience is greatly appreciated.
We are hopeful to be announcing some in-person, outdoormeetups for our Golden friends in the coming months stay tuned and send Daisya note if you have suggestions of locations or times for ameetup!

Ive fostered dogs of all ages for decades, and its an incredibly rewarding experience. But two years ago, I decided to focus solely on seniors and puppies. My daughter, June, had just turned three, and I was worried an active canine youngster might knock her down. I grew up with Goldens and have always been partial to the breed. After all, theyre sweet and smart, and theyre one of the few breeds with a sense of humor. I love everything about them. The retirement village name actually started as a joke for my home, although its true, as Ive had up to five seniors here at a time! That said, I prefer three to four so everybody can get plenty of attention, and right now, I actually have just one senior, nine-year-old Dixie.
Planning To Adopt A Rescue Dog Consider A Senior Dog
As you consider what age dog to adopt and bring into your family, please be sure to consider the joys and merits of adopting a senior dog. A senior is usually considered to be a dog at least 7 years old. This more experienced dog brings with him or her a more established temperament and easier adaptability to a new loving home. Having left puppy days behind, the senior dog is ready to be a loyal and loving companion, probably without the need for house training and obedience training .
This is not to say that an older dog wouldnt enjoy the training experience with you. Older pups have a longer attention span than puppies and often thrive on this kind of one-on-one time with their owner. Another consideration is that an older dog may be a good choice for an older person both individuals may have slowed down some and be very compatible.
There is sometimes the concern that there must be something wrong with a senior dog who has found himself in need of a new home. This is seldom the case. Much more likely is a problem in the former home or a change in circumstances, such as illness or death in the family, moving, divorce, travel, etc.
Like canines of all ages, senior dogs need love and consistent security. They also need good nutrition, exercise appropriate for their abilities and regular medical care. The cost of medical care for an older dog is not necessarily greater than that for a young dogand all the young dog expenses have already been paid!

- Expect There To Be Accidents: Getting used to a new environment can be very stressful, and your senior dog may have a few accidents in the house, during the adjustment period.
- Keep A Consistent Routine: Dogs love routine, it helps them to feel safe, comfortable and relaxed. Be sure to feed your dog at the same time, go for regular potty breaks, daily walks, playtime and bedtime all at the same time each day. This will help your senior adjust easier.
- Be Patient: Golden Retrievers are an easy-going breed and they seem to love everybody, which can make the adjustment period easier. Some Goldens will take to you and their new surroundings quickly, while others need a little more time. Dont be discouraged if it takes longer than you expect for your Golden to adjust.

What To Expect From Golden Retriever Rescue Centers
When you head to a golden retriever rescue center, expect to find a range of dogs that are identifiable as golden retrievers or golden retriever mixed breeds.
They will range in age from puppies to mature dogs and will have different levels of training and socialization.
The rescue center will provide the dogs with medical care, shelter, and training, and at the same time, look for suitable homes for each dog.
Expect the rescue center to ask you a number of questions to ensure you are ready to adopt a golden retriever. They will work with you and consider:
- Whether your lifestyle will permit you to care for and spend quality time with a pet?
- Whether you are prepared for the financial burden of caring for a dog for the next 10-15 years, including food, veterinary bills, and so forth?

My Fosters Come From Local Rescues
Most of the Goldens I foster are with the non-profit rescue Adopt a Golden Knoxville. They pull the dogs from shelters and also take owner surrenders. A family might need to surrender a dog for a variety of reasons, such as a job change, financial hardship, or death. Some really are fosters, meaning that they stay with me until we find them a home. This can take anywhere from two weeks to eight months. Others I adopt, and they stay with me until the end. For instance, I adopted Dixie in October 2019, so shell live out her remaining days here.

Senior Golden Retriever Health
Adopting a senior Golden Retriever means being prepared to care for any age-related health issues that could happen down the road or that your senior is facing now.
Golden Retrievers in general, are prone to many breed-specific health issues that could happen at any stage in life. Hip and elbow dysplasia, skin conditions such as allergies and hot spots, eye diseases and cancer are the most common.
Senior Golden Retrievers can be affected by:
- Arthritis.
- Hearing loss.
- Incontinence.

Michigan Golden Retriever Clubs
Golden retriever clubs are great resources for current and future golden retriever owners.
Some of the members may know about a golden who needs a home, or know people who know of goldens that need a home.
It can be a long shot, but if youre patient, it might be worth it.
And then, once you do get finally get your golden, the clubs can be even more useful.
They could help refer you to services like vets, groomers, or doggy daycares, you could attend the events they hold to socialize your pup and get them involved in dog sports, or you can just learn from other experienced golden retriever owners.

Norcal Golden Retriever Rescue
NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue is a volunteer organization whose primary purpose is to rescue and place Golden Retrievers in Northern California in loving and safe homes. The rescue operates from the Fresno area all the way to Oregon and into the Lake Tahoe area.
This rescue has over 150 volunteers across NorCal who donate their love and time to rescue over 400+ Golden Retrievers every single year. These volunteers take on a variety of tasks from fostering, testing temperaments, rescuing Golden Retrievers out of shelters, and keeping track of dogs. In addition, these volunteers will help you match with a Golden Retriever of your choice.
To adopt a Golden Retriever, you will need to fill in an online application on the NorCal Golden Retriever Rescue website. A volunteer will review your application and contact you. If all is well, the volunteer will arrange an at-home visit to make sure that you are able to care for one of these dogs.
If everything checks out, the volunteer will run through their extensive database to find you the best Golden Retriever match. If they find a match, they will arrange a visit with you to meet the dog at a foster home. If its a match, you will sign the adoption papers and leave with the Golden Retriever.

Tips For Caring For Rescue Dogs
You might want to take a look at our new puppy checklist before bringing home your new puppy. While our list focuses on puppies youll find a lot of items youll also need for a rescue dog.
Unlike brand new pups adopted from responsible breeders, rescue dogs often come with behaviors and habits from their previous homes that may or may not be suitable for their new home with you.
There are a few things you can do to make your dog feel comfortable in your home quickly and start learning new house rules without delay.
Golden retrievers in particular are very intelligent pups and should have no problem adapting if you do a few smart things.
- Dogs, like children, thrive on regularity, so create a schedule for them. Establish regular eating and exercise times, so they learn to know what to expect.
- Reward your dog for correct behavior by treating them with food or play. Dont yell or punish. Your dog can develop a negative reaction to this, especially if they have been punished by previous owners.
- Make sure everyone in the house is giving the same commands and following the same rules. It can be confusing for dogs when people use different commands for the same behavior, or when different behavior is acceptable with different members of the household.
- If they are not house trained, have them sleep in a crate, but not alone. It is better to place the crate in someones room. They can stop sleeping in the crate when they can consistently hold it the whole night.
