Why Is My Golden Retriever White

White Golden Retriever Puppies

If you notice that the golden retriever is a light color in the fur, they will probably be more of a cream color rather than white.

The white fur all over the dog is not common, it is going to be more of a few spots and patches of the white instead.

The full white is going to be unlikely because the Golden Retriever is going to be a shade of gold instead.

They can have some light hair that is present, but it is not standard.

If you try to show the dog at a show, then they are going to be penalized if the hair is too light.

You will need to check with the show to see whether the dog is going to have too much of the white present when you try to show them or not.

A few patches is generally OK, but it is best to have them in the darker shades of gold.

One thing to keep in mind is the exact breed of this dog that you are working with.

Many of the puppies are going to start out in a cream color, which is much lighter than some of the other golden colors that you will have.

However, the English cream golden retriever will often start out in cream and can get darker in color when they get older.

How Many Us Citizens Own A Pet

Seventy percent of U.S. households, or about 90.5 million families, own a pet, according to the 2021-2022 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association . This is up from 56 percent of U.S. households in 1988, the first year the survey was conducted, and 67 percent in 2019.

The Akc Does Recognize Cream

The Golden Retriever Breed Standard Illustrated

Many people think that the AKC doesnt recognize English Cream golden retrievers.

English Cream goldens are still golden retrievers, just with a fancy name and typically light coloring.

Here is what the AKC Breed Standard has to say about light golden retrievers: Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable.

Although it is undesirable, golden retrievers are golden retrievers, so if you have an English Cream golden, they can still be registered with the AKC as a golden retriever .

An interesting point here is that even though this light color is undesirable according to American Breed Standards, thats not the case with other countries.

Heres what the UK Breed Standard says about color: Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.

Heres what the Canadian Breed Standard says about color: Lustrous golden of various shades

And heres what the National Golden Retriever Council Australia says about color: Any shade of cream or gold but neither red or mahogany.

So although the American Breed Standard does not like the cream color, other countries are more accepting of it.

The cream color was added to the English standard in 1936. After years of selective breeding, these lighter specimens were given the name “English cream golden retrievers.” Today, these light-colored specimens may also be called English golden retrievers, European golden retrievers, blond golden retrievers, light golden retrievers, white goldens, or platinum blond goldens.

Vitiligo And Golden Retrievers

White Golden Retrievers..beautiful!!!

In some rare cases, a golden retrievers fur will turn white because of vitiligo. This is a skin condition that can lead to pigment loss in patches of hair and skin. Its believed that this condition is passed down through genetics, even though the specific causes are not known. However, its also fairly clear that this condition is linked to the cells in your dogs body that produce melanin.

Not every case of vitiligo is going to manifest itself in the same way in a dog. Sometimes, a dog will lose pigmentation all over the body, while in other cases, there will only be a few affected areas. Affected areas can expand as well in the first few months that your dog has the condition. Additionally, it can lead to dandruff and skin lesions.

The good thing is that this condition does not cause any pain for your dog. Its rare, and golden retrievers are not one of the most likely breeds to be affected by it. However, you should know that it tends to be more commonplace in purebred dogs because its hereditary.

Golden Retrievers Also Make Great Working Dogs

It’s not all fame and fortune for these pets. Many Golden Retrievers work as search and rescue dogs. Their tracking abilities and strong sense of smell help them find missing people. Perhaps the most well-known use of Golden Retrievers as rescue dogs was during 9/11, when a two-year-old trained rescue dog named Bretagne helped search for survivors. Bretagne went on to aid in the search and rescue efforts during Hurricanes Rita and Katrina as well.

Are They Officially Recognized

Miniature Golden Retrievers are not a member of the American Kennel Club but a certain mix of them is recognized by the Designer Dogs Kennel Club the Golden Retriever x Goldendoodle.

Responsible breeders are clearly committed to work towards the recognition of the breed and the enforcement of best breeding practices for Mini Goldens/ small golden retrievers. This usually translates to puppies sold already neutered, microchipped, with an ID tag and a health certificate.

As with any breed of dog, its imperative that you choose to buy from a reputable breeder in order to ensure the good health and longevity of your new pup.

The History Of Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers have an interesting history.

As legend has it, Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland wanted to create a hunting dog that could retrieve shot-down birds from both land and water.

His solution was to breed a wavy-coated retriever with a Tweed water spaniel, thus creating the first litter of golden retrievers in 1868.

Now although theyre common family dogs today, the fact that golden retrievers were originally bred for retrieving birds all day in the wilderness has left some lasting physical and personality traits that we see in them today.

  • They have lots of energy because they were bred to hunt all day
  • They are athletic because they were bred to swim in lakes and rivers and run through fields
  • They have a tendency to be mouthy because they were bred to hold birds in their mouths

So what does this have to do with the different types of golden retrievers?

Everything!

Knowing where golden retrievers came from can help us understand where we are today.

So now lets dive into the supposed 8 types of golden retrievers and discover the truth about each one.

Finding White On Your Golden Retriever

White Golden Retriever Puppies

Finding some white spots on your golden retriever is not something to cause concern.

It likely means that somewhere in their lineage, they had someone that had the white as well.

Since this is a genetic trait, you will likely be able to trace it back up the line for the dog.

It will not cause them any health conditions or worries along the way and they will be perfectly happy and healthy, and even a purebred, just like the traditional golden retriever.

Different Colors Of Golden Retrievers

Although there are three main types of Golden Retrievers, as defined by the location their breeding started from, there is a way to further classify them by their coat color. Unlike the breed standards that may differ across each countrys kennel club, the classification for the coat color is universal.

Golden Retrievers can be found to come in three general colors. Those colors are: light golden, golden, and dark golden.

There are some cases of retrievers being a copper tone, white, or black however, these coat colors are not accepted by the AKC as official colors of Golden Retrievers. If your dog has these colored coats, that could be a sign of a mixed breed.

Are White Golden Retrievers Rare

No.Those who are looking for a “white” or “platinum” golden retriever will be disappointed. While some goldens may appear very light in color, they are not actually white. The color white doesn’t genetically appear in this breed. Any ad offering “rare white golden retriever puppies” should be interpreted as a scam! Terms like “white,””platinum,””rare,” or even “English cream” are marketing words used to trick buyers into paying more for an ordinary retriever with a lighter coat color.

A “white” golden is also frowned upon by both British and American kennel clubs. Any amount of light-colored hair is considered a fault and will be penalized.

English cream golden retriever puppies tend to darken in color as they grow.

What Is A Mini Golden Retriever

Mini Golden Retrievers are a hybrid species resulting from a Golden Retriever mixed with a Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, or another small breed. They share the same looks as a Golden Retriever, but they are smaller in size. The average Mini Golden Retriever weighs 35 lbs .

Mini Golden Retrievers do not occur naturally. Instead, this is a breed where people select a female Golden Retriever to mate with a cocker spaniel, a poodle, or another small breed dog.

Some dogs are born with a deficiency in their progestins or thyroid hormones. This deficiency causes the dog to have limited growth. But this is not the case with Mini Golden Retrievers.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Take A Long Time To Mature

Golden retrievers, and larger breeds in general, mature slower than smaller breeds.

Although golden retrievers may look like adults around one-year-old, mentally theyll still act like crazy, stubborn puppies until theyre about two or three.

These teenage years for dogs can be some of the toughest times for dog owners, but know that this is totally normal and will soon pass.

That being said, a lot of people say that golden retrievers are like playful puppies for life, so expect to have a lot of fun with your golden throughout their lifetime.

Are Golden Retrievers Actually White Cream Or Gold

Golden retrievers come in a variety of colours. In this article, we have already seen that the colour of a golden retriever has nothing to do with its health, longevity or temperament. The colour of a Golden retriever is only a physical characteristic. Golden retrievers only receive their colour from breeding and this does not affect their character or temperament.

Every so often, people look at a light coloured golden retriever and describe it as white. This is an error as there is no such thing as a white Golden Retriever. The colour of the golden retriever that people often describe as white is actually known as English cream. So remember, the next time you see a light coloured golden retriever dont call it white. Instead, refer to it as English cream.
