Other Places To Rescue A Golden Retriever

If the Golden Retriever Rescue of Southern Maryland, Goldheart Golden Retriever Rescue, or the rescues in nearby states dont have a golden for you no worries there are other ways to find a dog who needs a new home.

One way is to get involved with your local golden retriever Facebook groups.

Heres why: sometimes people will need to give up their dog because they ran into unfortunate life circumstances.

They still love their dog so theyd rather find them a new home themselves, rather than give them up to an organization.

Thats where you can come in.

It doesnt happen often, but if youre patient, you can probably find a great dog that way.

The other way to find a golden who needs to be rehomed is by talking with people in your local golden retriever club

Golden Retriever Clubs In Illinois

Golden retriever clubs can be great resources for both current and hopeful golden retriever parents.

If youre looking to rescue a golden retriever, someone in the club may know of someone who needs to give their dog up.

It could be a long shot, but its in the same spirit of being active on the golden retriever Facebook groups if you talk with enough golden retriever lovers, you just might get lucky and get word of someone who needs to rehome their dog.

Of course, once you get your dog, the clubs can be of even more help.

You can:

  • Meet and get advice from experienced golden retriever parents
  • Have opportunities for your dog to socialize with other goldens and participate in dog sports
  • Get recommendations for services like vets, groomers, or doggy daycares

    Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and youll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

    The Golden Rescue From China

About As Good as Gold – Golden Retriever Rescue of Illinois 2018

Combine 4 Chinese rescues, 10 golden retriever rescues from the U.S., dozens of volunteers, thousands of dollars in donations and the result is 105 dogs rescued from China. Approximately 75 of the dogs were golden retrievers. Some of the dogs had been family pets. Early on in the pandemic Chinese citizens were instructed to give up their pets. Dogs were filling up the shelters some were found on the streets. There was a sense of urgency to rescue them before the onset of the cold winter weather. Their lives in China were not assured.

This mission was not for the undetermined. As if there werent difficulties in the first place, the COVID virus presented the biggest obstacle as it changed the process from challenging to quite formidableand that occurred mid-operation!

Pre-COVID, dogs would fly on the same plane as their flight volunteers. Dogs would have to be considered as luggage, but their crate time was less and the process much less costly.

Thanks to the generosity of those who donated, 105 dogs were rescued and will find homes here in the States. We are honored that among all the rescue associations involved, As Good as Gold contributors provided the second largest dollar amount in contributions to this effort.

This rescue was headed by Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest , China Rescue Dogs Paws Across the Ocean A Team of Rescues Working Together.

We Did It Thank You For All That You Contributed

The story begins years ago when GRRoW began to consider international rescue. In 2020, during a pandemic, we shared the experience with eight other rescues to bring 100 dogs to the U.S. from China. You can learn through the stories, of Sydney, Wendy, Wang Wang, Bei Bei, Bobby and Sunny that these dogs now have a second chance with new owners who are lucky to add them to their lives. Their owners and fosters are thrilled for the opportunity to experience something special and positive during such negative times.

GRRoW thanks the donors, fosters, fundraisers, transporters, coordinators, dog advocates and cheerleaders for these dogs. In this time of uncertainty, one thing is for certain: these dogs that came into GRROW are in their happy place.

International rescue is not for everyone, and we at GRRoW understand that. We continue to be available for EVERY dog that comes into our area. However, our adoption list continues to get longer. Our adoptions are occasionally closed due to the long wait.

We will continue to look at international options. We invite your support for our efforts by starting an international fund to use when these dogs become available to rescue. We have a generous donor who was so moved by the experience with the China dogs, he started the seed to start the international account. Please consider this option in choosing how your donation dollars are spent.

Goldens Are The American Family Dog

Although goldens are sweet and loyal and make excellent pets, many people focus on the looks and status of a golden without thinking about the commitment that they will need. Goldens are smart, witty, and perpetual puppies. If you dont do your homework before deciding to bring a golden in to your home, you could be in for quite a surprise.

That Cute Little Puppy Will Grow UpGolden puppies are probably the cutest thing on the planet, but people choosing to get a golden pup need to keep in mind that they will soon have a dog that is 65 to 90 pounds. They are still adorable then they grow up, but if the novelty wears off while they are still young, they can become ignored in their own home. As time goes on and the puppy gets bigger, it is imperative goldens attend an obedience class or two and that what is learned is reinforced at home.

Goldens Shed A Lot!Youll need to get used to tumbleweeds of dog hair, clogged vacuum cleaners and lint rollers in every room. Your favorite pair of black velvet pants will look like a muppet faster than you can imagine. Dog hair is something that you will have to deal with on an hourly basis if you bring one into your home. Worth it? Absolutely.

Goldens are Not Born TrainedNo, were not kidding. They are smart and need to go to a structured, positive-reinforcement obedience class immediately. Those goldens you see on TV? Years of training, time and effort. If you put in the time up front, you will be rewarded for years to come.

Other Ways To Find A Rescue Golden Retriever

The good news for golden retrievers is that there arent many goldens without a home that need to be adopted the demand is greater than the supply.

Of course, thats not so great news for those that want to adopt a golden!

But if the rescues dont have any goldens available, here are two other ways to find goldens in need of a home:

The first way is to join your local golden retriever Facebook groups.

Sometimes people that can no longer keep their goldens will post in these groups asking if anyone can take them in.

These reasons can often include changes to the family, current family members didnt get along with the new pup, or other unfortunate circumstances.

The other way is to get in contact with your local golden retriever club.

People may reach out to them if they need to surrender their dog, or some of the members might know someone who has a golden they need to give up.

This may be a long shot, but if youre patient and determined to rescue a golden, it could be worth it.

And speaking of golden retriever clubs, when you do get your golden retriever, they can be a great resource for you.
