The crate needs to be large enough so that your dog can lie down flat without being cramped. It also needs to allow your dog to sit up without hitting its head.

To find the correct measurement of the height of the crate, ask your dog to sit. Then measure a straight line from the crown of its head to the floor by its paws. Add four inches to this measurement, and you have the height of your crate.
