How Long Should Your Golden Retriever Be In The Crate
Crates become a place of safety and security for a Golden Retriever when they are crate trained properly. However, because it is a small and confined space, you never want to leave your dog locked in a crate for too long. Puppies should only spend a maximum of 3 to 4 hours a day in their crate. This does not include overnight sleeping in the crate.
Use this table as a guideline for how long you should keep your dog in its crate during the day:
|Age of Golden Retriever|
|17+ Weeks Old||4+ Hours|
It is also essential to make sure your Golden Retriever feels at home in its crate. Remember to associate the crate with positivity rather than punishment. This will help the crate training process and allow your dog to have a better night of rest.
Tips For Crate Training Golden Retrievers
You might know what crate to buy for your Golden Retriever, but that doesnt mean you know how to correctly crate train your pup. Luckily, weve highlighted a few tips that may help make the process a little easier:
Healthy Golden Retriever & Goldendoodle Puppies
Our whelping pen is in our living room. The puppies are in very close contact with our entire family for the first eight weeks of their lives. The puppy’s health and wellness are our absolute first priority, along with making sure their mothers are healthy.
We do not breed our female dogs on consecutive cycles, and they will only have one litter every year at most. Because all of our dogs are intimately part of our family, we make sure to take care of them, retiring them as soon as we notice any signs of stress or weakness.
Our breeding dogs are DNA screened for hereditary diseases that are sometimes found within their breed. All adult dogs are examined for hip dysplasia with radiographs at our local veterinary office. Due to our thourough health checks, we are comfortable offering a 1-year health guarantee for all of our puppies.

The Best Dog Crates For Golden Retrievers
Golden Retrievers are incredibly playful and friendly dogs that make great pets for families. These dogs are very intelligent with a cheerful demeanor, maintaining their puppy-like personality well into adulthood. Often sought after for being loyal, social, and easy to train, Golden Retrievers are sure to become lifelong best friends to their owners.
Golden Retrievers are very active dogs that require daily exercise. They enjoy physical activity, such as running and playing, but due to them being high-energy dogs, Golden Retrievers can easily over-exert themselves. This is one of the many reasons why dog crates are recommended for Golden Retrievers.
If left unsupervised, with no crate, Golden Retrievers can easily get into many household hazards, including cleaning products, trash, and sharp objects. Since they are naturally curious dogs, and with their playful nature, even the most unsuspecting of household items can be potentially harmful.
A quality dog crate is a fundamental part of caring for your Golden Retriever. When your dog has a comfortable and safe crate to retreat to, this creates a peaceful, stress-free environment for your pup to rest. This is especially important for ensuring your dog can have some relaxation or nap time and not just remain in an adrenalized state throughout the day.

If your attempts of crate training him have failed. Or all of a sudden, he has changed his mind about climbing in, fear not Golden owner. Try adding another layer of comfort, either in the form of a bed or extra blankets and pillows. If comfort is not the issue, add an item of your worn clothing or a pillow from your bed. This will add your scent to his crate, and it should entice him in.

How To Introduce The Crate
Golden Retriever puppies are extremely willing to please and love their owners. Most young puppies will be dismayed at being separated from their owners and may cry during the night. There are several tips to helping a young Golden Retriever puppy learn to embrace his crate:
- Feed the puppy in his crate. He will associate his crate with a positive experience.
- Hide treats in the crate. He will love searching for his treats under an old bath towel.
- Place his favorite toys in the crate.
- Praise the puppy when he goes into his crate.
Over time, the puppy will learn to see the crate as a safe haven and will enjoy sleeping in his “home.”
Neveruse the crate as a punishment.

She has come back to life, she initiates play all the time, she’s lost some weight! Woohoo! And she’s very motherly to Walter.
Walter is growing so fast, we just got home from the vet…he’s 32 lbs already and up to date on all his shots. He is so smart but SO stubborn lol – as you can see in the pics he’s also in need of a haircut so we can see his cute eyes again!
I just wanted to send you another email thanking you for the amazing experience picking out our beautiful pup Basil. We praise you 10x a day, and recommend anyone who falls in love with Basil to look you up. It truly makes a huge difference knowing that our puppy came from a loving and experienced home.

How To Measure A Golden Retriever Before Getting A Dog Crate
The crate needs to be large enough so that your dog can lie down flat without being cramped. It also needs to allow your dog to sit up without hitting its head.
To find the correct measurement of the height of the crate, ask your dog to sit. Then measure a straight line from the crown of its head to the floor by its paws. Add four inches to this measurement, and you have the height of your crate.
Then get your dog to stand and measure from the tip of its nose to the base of its tail.Add four inches to this, and you have the ideal length.

Why Did We Start Golden Valley Kennels
When I was living in Germany, my childhood was full of dreams of moving to British Columbia. This dream started from watching the Free Willy movie and falling in love with Orcas and Vancouver Island. Not quite island living but not any less mezmerizing, our family now greatly appreciates living in the valley of the beautiful Kootenays instead. Breeding Golden Retrievers has been my aspiration since I was 7 years old. Over the past years, I have conducted extensive research into ethical breeding practices through helpful organizations such as the Canadian Kennel Club.

Theres plenty of activities you can do, as Goldens are great companions for walking, running, playing in the park, swimming, and even hiking.
Besides running, Golden Retrievers need mental stimulation to thrive. You can teach her obedience training by yourself, as these dogs are known to be among the most obedient breeds. Other stimulating activities where Golden Retrievers register great results are canine freestyle and agility training.
Golden Retrievers were bred to work, so they need to be active to stay happy. Furthermore, the lack of exercise will generate a series of medical problems, including obesity and other related issues, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or problems with ligaments and tendons.

The best dog crate for an adult Golden Retriever depends on what you want to use it for and your dog. At home, a wire crate is suitable for well-trained Goldens who dont mind being left for an hour or two. A sturdier crate will be needed for chewers or those with separation anxiety. A soft travel crate is a good solution for when you take your Golden on trips away from home.

Top Dog Crates For Puppies
Though you have the freedom to choose from different designs and materials, keep in mind the golden rule of sizing a dog crate for puppies. Your puppy should have enough room to comfortably lie down, stand up, and turn around. Too much extra space increases the risk of your puppy having an accident during crate training. Once your puppy is housebroken, however, you can upgrade to a larger crate.
Here are our top picks for the best dog crates for puppies.
Petmate Navigator Pet Carrier
When looking for a sturdy wire dog crate for the golden retriever, this can be a good choice. This sturdy iron crate is built to last longer. As compared to a soft crate, the Petmate ProValu wire dog crate has a longer lifespan.
It can be folded down for easy storage and mobility. By folding down, you would be able to carry it without hassle.
Talking about security, the company has used a five-point precision lock system. With this locking system, your canine would be safe inside.
It also has a removable plastic pan. It would prevent floors from getting dirty. As its removable, cleaning would be easy.
FEATURES & BENEFITS

The Paws & Pals Folding Metal Dog Crate is a durable wire dog crate that is comfortable, affordable, and easy to clean. The best feature of this crate might be the lock. Its difficult to break out of, so you dont have to worry about escape artist Golden Retrievers finding a way out.
Like a lot of other similar crates, the Paws & Pals Folding Metal Dog Crate comes with a removable tray for cleaning. It folds up as well to make storage and transport a bit easier. Similar to other wire crates, this crate also comes equipped with a with a divider. Because of the divider, this crate will be suitable for Golden Retriever puppies, as well as adults.
We love the Paws & Pals Folding crate as an option because its available for a variety of different sized dogs. Its durable and difficult for dogs to break out of. This crate is available all the way up to 42 inches for some of the larger breeds.
Buy A Crate To Suit An Adult Golden Retriever Buy A Divider To Make It Smaller For Your Growing Puppy
If you were to buy the correct size crate for your Golden Retriever puppy and replace it as they grow, you would have to do so perhaps 3 or 4 times before theyre full-grown adults. This is an unnecessary waste of money.
Many brands of dog crate have dividers available that can be used to reduce the available space of a larger crate to suit a puppy.
The divider is a removable panel you can place inside the crate to reduce the space to suit the size of your dog. Or if one isnt available you can simply source and use a wooden board from your local DIY store.
So my advice is to buy a crate large enough to suit an adult Golden retriever, then use a divider to scale it down to a size that suits a puppy. This will save you money in the long run.
