English Cream Golden Retrievers
In recent years there has been a sharp increase in internet marketing strategies aimed at specifically promoting cream-colored Golden Retrievers. These light dogs are sometimes being presented to the general public as being exceptionally rare or extremely valuable and are often called English Cream Golden Retrievers or Rare White European Golden Retrievers or Exquisite Platinum Imported Golden Retrievers. Such cream Golden Retrievers are frequently being touted as being healthier, of having better temperament, of having stronger longevity and the implicit suggestion is that they therefore are more valuable than the more golden-colored Golden Retrievers bred in North America. Why English Cream Golden Retrievers
We owned, loved and bred American Golden Retrievers prior to discovering the English Cream Goldens. While both make wonderful family pets, the improved health and longevity of the English Cream Goldens has earned them a special place in our hearts, and we want to give you a chance to enjoy the boundless love and companionship these amazing dogs have to offer.
All Golden Retrievers are descended from a line originally bred in Scotland in the late 1800’s, and they come in a spectrum of colors ranging from pale cream to golden red. English Cream Golden Retrievers are not a separate breed. Throughout Europe, the UK, Canada and even Australia, they are just called Golden Retrievers. The other nicknames are used by Americans to differentiate the American Goldens from those bred to conform to the European breed standards. In addition to their distinctive pale cream coat, the European standards typically produce Goldens with a blockier head, slightly shorter frame, and a more mellow temperament than their American counterparts.

Exercise & Living Conditions
The English Cream Golden Retriever is less boisterous than his American counterpart, but this does not mean he needs any less exercise. Being a traditional working breed, he needs a lot of exercise. Expect to spend at least 1 hour every day vigorously exercising the English Cream, come rain or shine. If you cant do this, expect your English Cream Retriever to take out his energy on your possessions.
In between exercise sessions, he will need a lot of interactive playtime too. The Golden Retriever is the 4th most intelligent dog breed, meaning they need mental stimulation. Be sure to invest in plenty of toys for him to play with. Or design DIY brain games that you can both play, such as find the ball under the cup.
The English Cream Golden Retriever needs to live with an active family who can guarantee him his exercise needs and keep his intelligent mind occupied. Because of this, and the fact that he is a needy dog who craves the company of his humans, he needs a family that can spend most of their time with him.
Apartment living is not going to work for the English Cream. He needs a larger home with access to his own yard that he can roam and chill in til his hearts content. Because he is an outdoorsy dog breed, he will get cabin fever very quickly.

Characteristics Of White Golden Retrievers
English Cream Golden Retrievers are known for their highly relaxed, ultra-mellow temperaments. These dogs are intelligent, loving, playful and incredibly loyal, which makes them the perfect pet to own from puppyhood. Many people desire the quality European bloodlines associated with the White Golden breed, which guarantee the highest pedigree for dog shows and future breeding. In fact, White Golden Retrievers are often bred for three main reasons: their unmatched temperament, their outstanding health, and their sturdy structures. White Goldens also sport glossy light-colored, cream-colored coats, and generally grow healthy and strong. All Goldens have at least some Golden color in their coats, even the whitest cream colored Golden still have gold highlights running throughout their coats. Hence the term Cream is a much more appropriate description than White.
This breed loves to be active and offers a beautiful light-colored coat of hair that stands out against other breeds. A White Golden Retriever puppy is a team player and behaves well with everyone. They will be able to produce documentation to prove the lineage, and that they are English Cream Golden Retrievers. Not just very light golden American Golden Retrievers. There is usually an increased cost for English Cream Golden Retrievers, simply because it costs a lot to buy the very best examples from Europe and ship them over.

European Golden Retriever Puppies
Despite their name, European Golden Retriever puppies are bred and sold all over the world. In Europe, they are simply called Golden Retrievers. This sets them apart from Labrador Retrievers, which have been bred in distinct English and American lineages for so long that owners on both sides of the Atlantic often specify which type they have.
European Golden Retrievers in the U.S. have either been imported from Europe, or bred from parents imported from Europe. Since theyre not as established as Goldens meeting the American standard, good breeders are more likely to have long waiting lists.

European Golden Retriever Health
Golden Retrievers of all types are prone to
- joint diseases, including hip and elbow dysplasia
- thyroid disease
- and a scaly skin condition called ichthyosis.
They live for 11-13 years, on average. All adult Goldens should be tested for hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease and eye disease before they are used for breeding. Dogs with a family history of skin problems or cancer should also be removed from breeding programmes.
Are European Gold Retrievers Healthier?
European Goldens are not healthier than any other type. The healthiest Goldens are bred from health tested parents, regardless of type. Its nice to think that having gone to the trouble and expense of importing European Goldens to breed from, those breeders will be invested enough in the quality of their dogs to health test them before breeding. But always walk away from a breeder who claims that European Goldens are just innately healthier and dont need health tests. They do!
European Golden Retriever Temperament
In English and American Labradors, there is a marked difference in temperament. But at the moment this is not so for Golden Retrievers. European Goldens, like Goldens the world over, are the ultimate people dog. They love meeting people, playing with people, and training with people. Not to mention cuddling up to them!
Their love isnt confined to their own family either. Goldens are typically friendly to a fault. There is no one and nothing they wont cover at high speed to say hello to. To get the most of your Goldens temperament, socialize them to lots of different situations while they are still under 12 weeks old, and teach them to greet new people by sitting down for a treat, rather than jumping up!

Parents With Conformation And Performance Titles
Thirdly, weve successfully shown our dogs parents in three venues: conformation, obedience, and rally. We have earned titles at highly competitive levels in all three. You can also learn which titles you can earn in a weekend of shows with any mediocre dog.
We have done well with our older dogs in the conformation ring earning a wide variety of impressive titles. However, for our younger dogs, we have decided to concentrate our efforts in the obedience ring. We prioritize temperament and health over looks. However, all of our dogs are still beautiful and they come from long lines of conformation champions.
Differences From The Golden Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is regarded as a strong, solid dog that is lively and incredibly friendly. Like the White Goldens, the more traditionally colored Goldens are intelligent and loyal. However, Goldens differ from their light-colored, cream-colored counterparts in temperament category. While both shades are known for being friendly and good-natured, cream or white Goldens tend to be more laid back.

European Golden Retriever Size
Another point of difference in the breed standards is size. According to the original European breed standard, the ideal female Golden Retriever is 20 to 22 inches tall at the withers . And the ideal male is 22 to 24 inches tall. But in the AKC breed standard, the ideal female is 21.5 to 22.5 inches tall, and the ideal male is 23 to 24 inches tall. So for Americans, as in so many areas of life, bigger is better when it comes to Golden Retrievers. And European Goldens are on average more petite in comparison.
