Group Gives Healing New Homes To Retrievers

BRUNSWICK – Virginia Pearson had a busy day Friday.

She and a few friends traveled by caravan to Pearson, Ga., to pick up a dozen golden retrievers – nine adults and three puppies – from a breeder who is going out of business.

It’s the sort of thing she does all too often as regional director of Grateful Golden Rescue, an organization that gives homeless and endangered golden retrievers a second chance. She has plenty of work because there are so many of them. The American Kennel Club listed golden retrievers as the fourth most popular breed the past two years, and the dogs with shaggy golden or reddish hair had been second most popular in recent years. Labrador retrievers are usually in the top spot.

The organization has a network of foster homes that take care of the dogs until a suitable home can be found.

Pearson and her husband, Bruce, have three now. Sunshine from Glynn County Animal Services had hair so matted it had to be sheared, and Gabe, from Savannah animal control, had a nylon rope imbedded in its neck and is undergoing heartworm treatment, Pearson said.

“We won’t turn a dog down because it has heartworms,” she said.

Instead, the organization gets the dogs needed veterinary care and gets them spayed or neutered while they’re in foster homes, she said.

“We take care of any veterinary problem they have before we adopt them out,” Pearson said. “We’ve gotten them from animal control with broken legs.”

Gabe is going to a permanent home soon.

    Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
