About New York State Retriever Rescue
New York State Retriever Rescue, Inc is a not for profit 501c organization comprised of a network of volunteers. These devoted individuals are dedicated to locating homes for retrievers in need that represent the kind nature and spirit commonly associated with Labrador and Golden Retrievers: affability, gentleness and a peaceful, loving temperament. The organization also offers services to those who are unable to care for their dog. Our mission is to provide veterinary care for any and all dogs prior to being placed in loving homes.
Labrador Retriever Takes Top Spot For Record 23rd Year
In their annual announcement released on January 31st of 2014, the American Kennel Club revealed the results of their pure bred registration statistics. Once again, the intelligent, family friendly Labrador retriever has taken the #1 spot on the most popular list for the 23rd consecutive year, the longest reign at the top in AKC history. Woody and Judi Thurman, owners of Twin Lakes Kennel, were not surprised by the announcement. We know how popular the Labrador retriever is just by the high demand we have experienced this year, said Judi. Judi, who is in charge of everything puppy, said, This has been our strongest year in our forty year history of breeding these beautiful dogs. We have helped birth and place more puppies this year than in any of our previous forty.
Woody, Master Trainer who has titled more than 200 AKC Master Hunter Labrador Retrievers and also qualified another 47 retrievers at AKC Master Nationals said, We select from the most dominant American field bloodlines and breed for natural hunting instinct and tractability, producing healthy, intelligent, trainable puppies. Who Volunteers For Grrowls
GRROWLS began in Syracuse in December of 1991. Currently, there are volunteer groups across New York State from Albany to Jamestown. These volunteers provide a safety net for all the unwanted Goldens and almost-Goldens that are t urned over to rescue each year. To accomplish this, we need a variety of dedicated and hard-working volunteers.
The majority of people who work with GRROWLS are not trained professionals. But they are all dog lovers who give their time and effort to help these dogs get back to a physically and emotionally healthy life. GRROWLS provides training for volunteers interested in fostering or evaluating dogs or potential adoptive homes.
We also have dedicated professionals who help out. Our veterinarians are always available for consultation on heath problems. Behavioral consultations are available for help with many other problems we encounter. In addition, we have volunteers who are dog breeders, dog trainers and those who show dogs.
Many of those who work with us provide foster care for our orphans. This is a difficult but highly rewarding job. Others transport the dogs from all across the state. Some dogs have been found on Long Island and placed in Buffalo! This requires a cavalcade of workers from many different parts of New York State. Still other volunteers send out applications and information that is requested. Training is required for those who foster, evaluate dogs or do home visits.

At Famn Damily Farm, our main focus is instilling a calm temperament. Our dogs get along wonderfully with children and kitties. We focus on the four major health clearances for eyes, heart, hips and elbows. We breed dogs that have no hot spots and do not need to have their anal glands drained. GRROWLS has been instrumental in helping to close puppy mills and will continue this fight across the country. We have also taken a number of dogs cast off by puppy millers. We are committed to caring for dogs recovered from these deplorable situations. Rehabilitating and finding homes for these dogs is a costly and consuming endeavor.

Some Things To Consider
Goldens make ideal pets, but they do have some disadvantages! Please consider those listed below before you decide to share your life with a Golden.
Size: Goldens are considered medium size. However, males range between 23 24 at the shoulder and weigh between 75-95 pounds. Females range from 21 22 and usually weigh 55-75 pounds. Their very active tails are best known for clearing low tables of all adornments.
Exercise: Goldens require constant, hard exercise to allow them to become the calm housepets most owners expect. Fenced yard and twice daily walks are highly recommended.
Shedding: Goldens have long, beautiful coats that shed at least twice a year. Regular brushing and professional grooming can keep the amount of hair lost to a minimum however, you will always have some dog hair on furniture, rugs, clothing, and oh yes, occasionally in your food!
Health/ Care: Most breeds are prone to certain problems. Although Goldens have only a few, we feel it is best for you to know the worst: Goldens may develop skin allergies, dry coats and occasionally hip or eye problems. However, many never experience any of these problems. Feeding one dog a good quality dog food will cost $400.00 $600.00 per year. Veterinary expenses have been estimated at $300.00 $500.00 per year. Also keep in mind such expenses as food dishes, leashes, toys, collars, brushes, shampoo, toys, etc.!

Homeward Bound is a not for profit volunteer organization. We are not a shelter and we do not have a facility – all the dogs in our program live in foster homes. We take our dogs into our homes and care for them as if they were our own until they go to their forever homes. The time we spend with them helps us to learn more about them, which allows us to be able to provide applicants with an accurate assessment and the dogs individual strengths and needs.
Please also take a few minutes to read the adoption information and to fill out the entire application especially your vet information for all your animals. And please remember to call your vet to release information to us too.
Please understand that our mission is to promote lifelong happiness for our dogs and their adoptive families so please be patient but feel free to email us if you have not heard from us in a few days.

Suggestions For Places To Adopt A Golden Retriever Or Similar
there’s golden retriever rescues in the area that i’d encourage you to look at, quick google search of “golden retriever rescue western ny” will pull some up! i don’t have any experience with these groups personally, but i’ve heard good things. usually rescues ask for a fenced in yard, but the rescue i adopted my lab from didn’t mind as long as we didn’t get invisible fence. wasn’t a problem for us, we never leave our dog out unsupervised.
there’s a TON of backyard breeders of goldens. if a dog is coming from a breeder and doesn’t have AKC papers, it’s a backyard bred dog. you’re running a higher risk for temperament and health issues from these dogs. i HAVE had personal experience and my lab/golden mix only lived to about 9 years old and died of a genetic autoimmune disease which lead to kidney failure, all due to careless breeding. dogs from these breeders are cheaper, but at what cost?
if you’re serious about a golden and want a purebred, do your research. go to a breeder who does testing . ask if they breed for looks, health, or temperament: the answer you’re looking for all of the above. i might say the priority should be temperament > health > looks. you want parents with papers, though i wouldn’t say they necessarily have to be shown and titled. it’s actually easy to title a dog if you go to small enough shows.
